Xenophopic violence continues in South Africa– the toll so far being 62 dead and 670 wounded:
Attacks broke out in a poor neighbourhood of Johannesburg on May 11 and spread across the country, targeting immigrants including Zimbabweans and Mozambicans, whom locals blamed for taking their jobs.
The Ugandans aren’t impressed with South Africans:
We have always known South African black people to be even more discriminatory than the whites who rode roughshod over them during apartheid. We just didn’t think they’d go this far- beating and killing fellow blacks from other countries, blaming them for their economic woes.
The Nigerians are protesting at the South African embassy.
Mozambique claims there has been no retaliation against South Africans but they have absorbed 32,000 people fleeing the violence.
Of course none of this is really new to South Africa, it has just become more intense and is now making the news. Just check out the dismal photo gallery that has been documenting the death of Johannesburg since 2006.

The decline of Johannesburg is certainly something to behold. Even 12 years ago when I was there you had to pay an armed guard to watch your car while you ate a restaurant.
Of course it’s all the white man’s fault, etc. etc. blah blah blah.
South Africa hasn’t completely fallen apart (yet) simply because of the resilience of the infrastructure that was in place prior to the ANC taking over. And that is the only reason.
And as with Zimbabwe, the do-gooders and liberals of the world will maintain for years and years (along with their friends in the MSM) that South Africa is doing just fine, while anyone with half a brain will have long ago realized the truth.
Liberals have a way of simply ignoring the truth if it casts their decisions in a bad light.
Surprise, surprise!
A populace that was once manipulated to see racism as the cause of their societal and economic woes turns and blames….another group for their current societal and economic woes.
There is a saying; “The more things change, the more they remain the same.”
The US is going to send “Obama” and his entourage of preachers, money men and general lackeys over there to finish it off altogether. Once thats done he can bring his essence back to North America and destroy it in partnership with Ackmennutjob.
Where’s Shaidle to tell us how great things would be if those stoopid blacks had kept apartheid.
Where are the liberal/left who defend apartheid in Canada? That’s all multi-culteralism is, ghettoization.
Ted, I’m sure this level of thought is rather scary for you, but perhaps Kathy is saying that, when you see things like this, the once-unthinkable idea that Apartheid would seem like a better time suddenly becomes understandable. Not that it should happen, or that it was a paradise, but that by comparison it would actually be an improvement. Which is all the more shameful. And that shame is the emotion that the people behind this need to access.
Ted @ 9:15, please tell us one, just one African country that has gone from white rule to all black rule and prospered. And no it isn’t a racist comment, just a question.
Heh, looks like formerly nice downtown Hamilton, now skid-central. It ain’t about the colour, its about the crooked socialists.
On a note of faint optimism, the opinion article in The Monitor would indicate that educated Africans recognize the problems. Are they energetic or powerful enough to address them?
There’s a photo, posted at 10:06, of a hotel in central Johannesburg. It went through a quick succession of “liberal” owners, but it flopped for each of them. This is what the blogger says about it (errors in the original):
“But, of course, nothing could withstand the onslaught of the New South Africa, and very quickly, as central Johannesburg’s complexion changed, fewer and fewer tourists came to stay at the hotel. It turned a roaring loss – have cost untold millions to build – and eventually Sun International abandoned the building and it closed down, with the company just writing off the millions it had put into the site. But, it seems, there is no end to liberal suckers, and the Holiday Inn Group then bought the empty building, and tried to turn it into a “Holiday Inn Express”. This also proved to be a dreadful flop, and the hotel was closed down and emptied for the second time. But, there is no end to the chumps: a new set of madmen re-opened the building in 2002 as the KwaDukuza Egoli Hotel, which means ‘Gathering Place in the City of Gold’. Unfortunately for them, this plan aslo, utterly predictably, saw its arse, and today, once again, the 20 odd storey building stands desolte, boarded up and empty, waiting for the inevitable… ”
HEHEHEHEHE! Political correctness has a price.
Hey, Ted, Ruwanda mean anything to you, anywhere in the days of colonial Africa did whites ever butcher Africans like they have butchered each other?
It’s the misguided lefty self-loathing guilty-white-boy Ted’s of the world that assist blacks whether they are in ghettos in Detroit, Haiti, or African hell holes by excusing the ignorance, corruption and crime and deflecting all responsibility away from them. It’s the left’s bigotry of soft expectations at play. Because after all small children can’t be held accountable for their behavior, right, Ted.
Oh, and by the way, Ted, Haitians practice slavery, one out of ten of their children are technically slaves. Google it. The child slave owners aren’t white. So whose fault is that?
My my my, penny. So much anger and arrogance and ignorance in one little cooment. You’ve really outdone yourself. You have quite the amazing telepathic powers to discern that I hold all those thoughts just from my pointing out that Kathy supports apartheid (as well as segregation, too, by the way).
A more intelligent reader might have realized that they have no clue what I think about Africa, having not actually written anything on the subject. But I forget what website I’m at.
Calling Detroit mayor “Kwame” Kilpatrick!
Ted, when an individual brings to your attention 1 in 10 kids in Haiti are slaves, this:
“My my my, penny. So much anger and arrogance and ignorance in one little cooment. ”
is not an appropriate response for a normal human being.
Ted,
You are playing word games … We all know where you are coming from and you are not liked here. Shaidle is loved here, so why not piss off. What you think of Africa is irrelevant, you are nothing but a liberal fool, so there isn’t much thought at all going through your tiny brain.
Re Black on black … the usual … hey don’t Muslims do this a lot too?
I have read and watched African events for a few decades now and the logical conclusion is that when there are responsible white Euro types telling the local blacks to get clean up their mess and get back to work, they all do much better and life is more peaceful.
Even under white rule in South Africa, the greatest persecutors of black were other tribal blacks.
It would seem that the native peoples of Africa and why not toss in most of the middle east as well, have some evolving to do.
It is grossly unfair to keep blaming whitey for the ills of blacky or brownie, simply for having apparently evolved further faster. Hard work, cooperation and other of the better Christian values such as “cleanliness is next to godliness” “Love thy neighbors” etc. put us ahead of other groups on this planet. All they have to do is stop listening to their own bull crap like Obama’s pastors, wife and friends and copy whitey!
The Japanese did this successfully and now the Chinese have begun to do this so have the East Indians. Peace, peace and prosperity is a great replacement for violent tribalism and chauvinistic religious bullying.
As I looked at those pics of Johannesburg I noted the garbage strewn all over the place. We call that littering over here and we not only fine people for doing it, we have workers come around and keep the place clean so we don’t look like a black ghetto. It’s takes almost no effort at all to pick up paper and crap off the streets, but I guess there is no more Whitey around to tell them to do it. Too bad. It will only get worse.
I am sure Ted is vomiting all over his Birkenstocks after reading this rant.
Maybe not, Citizen, but its what we’ve come to expect from Ted. No matter the subject, Ted’s gotta be a weenie about it.
When I hear stuff like that bit in Hati, it just strengthens my resolve to see that it never happens here, where Liberals seem hell bent on importing it.
“…anywhere in the days of colonial Africa did whites ever butcher Africans like they have butchered each other?”
Yes, in the Congo, especially when it was King Leopold’s personal property being handed over to the Belgian government. But that, admittedly, was the exception.
Is Zim becoming one of China’a farms? Is this why the Chinese sent Mugabe a ship full of AK-47’s and 3 million rounds?
http://www.africancrisis.co.za/Article.php?ID=27808&
Just set down with the popcorn, and tv flicker. They are not done killing yet, reality tv, that will knock the others off the radar. It is going to be interesting to see how the left-libs try and spin it to be the fault of Bush, a white man, who is also blamed for every brain dead islamist action in the world.
My my my, ted such an empty sanctimonious rant. LOL
Just so damn predictable from those in fiberal la la land when confronted with facts – name call, avoid or lie, and next will be the bullying and etc…sigh what’s new with those that can only propagandize?
hehehehehehe Lovely bit of lib bashing above. Keep it up, gang.
Oh Ted, did you know that the Cherokee Indians had Black slaves at one time? And some of the Indians on Canada’s west coast were slave owners before the evil Whiteman arrived?
Just a little factoid for your reading pleasure.
And who the hell do you think actually captured and sold all those African slaves to the Brits and Americans during the high days of Southern cotton plantations and Scarlet O’Hara’s? HMMM? The Brits and Americans were both middle men and customers, but they didn’t do the actual “harvesting” of the raw goods, deep in the jungles.
Got a laugh reading the comments on the Johannesburg blog where posters, with spittle flying, were comparing the unbelievable degradation of this former lovely city with Harlem or Brixton and other areas of western cities decrying we have the same problems as SA.
The blog administrator calmly points out time and again that the comparison areas are populated by the same black people. Notice any similarities.
Actually Ted, I said it at my own blog. 🙂
Don’t make me come over there and throw peanuts at you!
And Doug, don’t forget the mayor of New Orleans — the one they actually RE-ELECTED!
Just don’t get me started on the OJ Simpson “How do ya spell ‘DNA'” jury…
Gee…that photo reminded me of downtown London, Ontario.
Guess this is ‘racist’ too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN8rXBNWnsg
Ted, are you planning to answer the question —
“Name an African/black majority nation that isn’t a basketcase?”
or did you run for the epi pen?
“Name an African/black majority nation that isn’t a basketcase?”
As African countries go – and despite a high HIV rate – Botswana has managed to bumble along with a relatively good degree of success.
JJM, well Botswana can be considered the exception if you can call it that. Just like Leopold’s actions were the exception in the old Belgian Congo. Personally, of the countries south of the northern Arab countries(Morocco, Algeria, Lybia, Egypt, I think Ethopia is a better example than Botswana.
And exceptions have a bad habit of proving the rule.
I get a kick out of the “colonialism” excuse. America, Canada and Australia are all former colonies, too. Funny that.
India and Pakistan both achieved independence at the same stroke of midnight, yet they are very different . Gee, I wonder why…?
Oh, clever Kathy, getting so predictable. Anti-muslim post, anti-muslim post, anti-black post, anti-muslim post, women’s undergarment post, anti-muslim post, anti-muslim post, depriving blacks of freedom in South Africa is ok post, anti-muslim post, obscure film post,anti-muslim post, overly repeated line about ‘more abortion murderers on Law and Order then in real life’ (even though that is in fact not true), depriving blacks of freedom in the US south is ok post, anti-muslim post…
‘What? Someone dare point out that, while I whine incessantly about my own rights, I highlight the benefit of depriving rights to people who are not the same skin tone as me? How dare they! How dare anyone say I’m a bigot! I just don’t like non-whites and non-Christians, hate them in fact.’ But can’t address my own hypocrisy. No, must throw out stupid line about hypocrisy being worst sin for LIEberals and then make petty childish personal attacks.’
And this is the woman you “love” john?
Oh, and in case anyone did not get the reference to peanuts and epi pen: Clever Kathy knows my 7 year old has a serious allergy to peanuts and has had to be rushed to emergency because of it. But I’m not a far right wingnut so it’s ok to mock my son and the health problem he was born with.
Nice class act that Clever Kathy. Nice. Class. Act.
ted, if you don’t like being insulted, why do you post comments here (particularly comments that “call out” Kathy)? It would seem that you are a bit masochistic.
And we all notice that you haven’t posted anything substantive to refute any of the previous postings…just “tut-tut” and “tsk-tsk”.
You’re fading into irrelevance, apparently…first you posted as “Cerberus”, then as “Ted”, and now as “ted”…what’s next? “te”?
Ted, dude. Why on EARTH would you let your “enemies” know A) that you even have kids and B) one of them has dangerous allergies? And having given the other side free ammo, then whine about it?
The world is a mean place, Ted. You play with the bull, you better watch his horns. Wake the f-k up.
Eeyore:
I haven’t responded to any of the so-called substantive posts above, like that North American Indians had slaves and that Haitians have slaves, because they altogether moronic. Besides which, they clearly aren’t meant to be addressed to me. I haven’t blamed a thing on “whitey” as suggested so it is quite moronic to suggest that I should defend that position. In fact, I point the finger at their leaders doing nothing and the criminals. It’s called individual responsibility not group responsibility. I am very aware, as penny points out, that NA Indians once had slaves but unlike Clever Kathy and penny and their ilk, I think a person’s freedom matters no matter what colour or race or religion – the Indians of the past were obviously contemptible for holding slaves. So what? How does that make Clever Kathy’s favouring apartheid less contemptible?
There are many serious and complicated problems in the world today. What is very ironic and very telling is that for people like Clever Kathy and penny, the solution always seems to involve some restriction of OTHER people’s rights and freedoms. Always whining about “group” identification politics, but never themselves moving past group identification criticisms and attacks (“muslims are evil murderers”, “blacks are stupid”). They are the same, flip side of the same coin as the Judy Rebik’s and Naomi Klein’s of the world. Full of hate for difference and for people who would take away their privileges.
Ted, like all liberals is insulted by pictures like these. How dare anybody show that caring, compassionate and just liberal programs lead to absolute anarchy, destruction and murder.
How dare anybody show that barbaric cultures are not equal to civilized cultures. And that modern liberal values and policies always result in desolation and death.
Just how is it racist to point out that in South Africa the blacks are killing a different shade of black because they are not black enough, or too black, or they come from a different tribe? How is it racist to point out that black racist are violent? All south African blacks need is some sensitivity training, and we know all will be well.
Africa is the world’s sewer. The inhabitants have not progressed beyond a tribal life and need a few more generations of education and exposure to
modern society. They have come to expect the West to bail them out of every calamity that befalls them. They are the authors of their own misfortune, I would suggest.
But what do I know-I’m not ted.
Most Canadians I believe are ignorant of the fact apartheid was based on our reservation system for natives in the early 50’s. Tells you all you want to know about Liberals & a free Canada. Why the HRC’s with the ideology of multiculturalism where normalized to ghettoize Canadians into segregated minorities. Some of course more equal than others. By intimidation as well as propaganda As for Ted bet you where a fan of the old tie a burning gas filled tire on your enemies neck, Winnie the wife.
We all knew this would be the end game years ago but hoped it would not end in dissolution like all the other States there in Africa run by mad men. Watch as it becomes another Mugabe land with an average life span of 37 years down in 20 years from 67, no food & infrastructure destroyed in violence. Time will tell but how many times have we witnessed this, ending in the same result. Tribalism. The very thing our intelligentsia worships in their multicult socialist fantasy Island. By the way anyone notice our cities & infrastructure decaying under neo-Marxism. Socialism is a curse for any Nation. Ask Norway in 20 years. Sorry Norabad by that time.
Some random thoughts from one who has had exposure to a few less than salubrious places in his time:
1. Africa isn’t a complete basket case. Some places are rather “shambolic” by our standards but not necessarily dirty – the social services and amenities we take for granted require levels of tax revenues that just don’t exist in Africa. Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, comes to mind.*
2. Colonial and apartheid rule did fail the Africans in one important aspect: no African entrepreneurial/civil service middle class was ever comprehensively developed. As much as the lefties hate the bourgeoisie (a form of self-loathing, given that “liberal-minded” political intellectuals almost invariably have middle-class origins), it’s the class that runs things. Case in point: Idi Amin kicked out the East Indians who provided the mercantile economy of Uganda. Result: economic collapse (there’s a story of one Ugandan who took over a former East Indian men’s shop in Entebbe and sold shirts by the neck size – he thought it was the price label).
3. I was on an Air Afrique flight to Paris several years ago. There were three classes: economy, business and nine first-class seats. But for the odd backpacking student, economy was full of Africans with cheap luggage and plastic bags heading back to France to work. Business (where I was sitting) was almost exclusively Europeans – businessmen, UN personnel and the like. First class was all wealthy Africans. That flight was Sub-Saharan Africa in microcosm.
4. Our boring old European culture of civic organization. In Europe and North America, we all have this imprinted in our brains. Two contrasts: Bosnia-Hercegovina and Haiti. Bosnia-Hercegovina was beaten to a shambles due to war. As soon as the fighting stopped, what was the reaction of the population, be they Croat, Bosniac or Serb? Clean up the streets get the telephones working, fix up the schools paint the classrooms and get the kids back in there. Port-au-Prince, Haiti: sewers clogged, phones long dead, garbage everywhere. Not caused by war but by the complete absence of any sustained civic organization in that society. And why bother? If you’re one of the 95% of Haitians on the bottom rung, what does it get you? Every man for himself!
* The most poignant thing I witnessed in Bangui was little kids with their school books crowded around streetlights to do their homework because there was not enough light at home. That kind of enthusiasm deserves encouragement! And our kids whine because they their broadband connection is too slow…
Ya Ted,
Kathy speaks for me every time. You are an enemy of all that is good and right.
And bye the bye, playing the sympathy card regarding your kids will get you no where here. If it isn’t a race cars, gender card or po’ me card cause my kid is allergic or my parents didn’t love me etc etc. then it is some kind of human right denial. These are hallmarks of the left. Weak, incapable, unprotected, unloved.
Tells ya what .. you are fortunate to have the right to go freely and earn a living. You can freely care for your own kids with your own money and time. You are free to come and go as you please and even become wealthy if you are willing to do what it takes. You can take your kids for a ride and there are no suicide bombers, road side bombs. If you get sick you can get care, more or less for free.
You have no reason to whine, complain or criticize anything because when you were born in this free, white English speaking country, you hit the jackpot.
I know you lefties are never happy, but that is your nature and I am okay with that as long as you keep it to yourself.
South Africa is a mess primarily because the West saw fit to cause a functioning government to give up, knowing that a bunch of Commies (the ANC) would take over.
Apartheid was simply unacceptable. In its pure form – the “separate but equal” formula – maybe, but as practised it was exploitation and victimisation and bound to fail.
To blame Black people generally for the current violence is a poor argument. One just has to point to what was carried out by the lily-whites of Germany and Russia in the last century, to get egg on one’s face.
Nonetheless, non-Western cultures everywhere have mostly not been successful in propagating modern economies.
The answer’s out there somewhere ….
Oh, and one more thing.
Perhaps the very worst thing to happen to post-colonial Africa: that whole tedious flirtation with socialism and Marxist-Leninism.
The application of these bankrupt dogmas in newly independent African countries or in various “liberation movements” has been responsible for a scale of atrocities not seen since the days of slavery.
From the Ugandan piece
“You are tempted to think the calm they have enjoyed between 1990-2008 was simply a coffee break which is now over, and normal service has resumed: discrimination and violence.”
What a brilliant piece of writing – this guy is worthy of being a guest blogger on SDA!
There was a story in one of the magazines I read, about how in the Sudan, that because of the perpetual tribal killings, that men were in scarce supply. It was so bad in one village that they had to bite the bullet and the females had to take over doing the men’s jobs. There was this female who they made a leader, a mayor, or something similar to that. Well she took over and put all these other females in jobs that females were not allowed to work at. Apparently the village was running tickety-boo, with her trading in the tractors and machinery, a foreign aid gift, that know one knew how to operate, for some cows and chickens. That was a few years ago, good chance she is dead along with the whole village. The point being that Africa is a nation of kill or be killed. A way of life, a pastime. Sort of like downtown Toronto. How do you turn a culture like that around? You don’t pretend you understand it, you don’t make excuses for it, you just state loud and clear that it is inferior. Sooner or later they will get the message.
and the difference between these scenes and what you can find in dozens of american cities is?
shucks. lets just bring back apartheid. is that the message with this reference to pavilions?
Hey, we had it all figured out back in ’58.
Merry Minuet
(and we didn’t even have global warming to worry about)
and the difference between these scenes and what you can find in dozens of american cities is?
Having lived and traveled in the USA for about 12 years, I can tell you that the neighborhoods you refer to are the black neighborhood. I cannot speak for the burgeoning barrios that are exploding nowadays, but the fact remains, White neighborhoods are much cleaner and safer.
The apartheid system must have some life left in it. We use it here in Canada with the native Indians and presently, Toronto is embarking on such a scheme in it’s educational system with the wonderful Caribbean community.
There is a human fact that cannot be ignored, ‘likes attract’. That is how we got countries with borders in the first place. We cannot improve on that wisdom of the past before political correctness and self-loathing by white westerners happened.
Ted, this is too easy. I posted one comment today and never mentioned historic Native American slave holdings nor proposed a solution that “involve some restriction of OTHER people’s rights and freedoms”.
Call me old fashioned, but, my husband and I were always sticklers with our kids on things like facts versus crap thinking, if they came to the dinner table spouting nonsense, it got challenged. We felt that ultimately life wouldn’t reward the mentally lazy, the perpetually immature, the narcissistic, but, then, that paradigm is alien to you.
I wonder if Wilbur Smith ever imagined anything like this.
