Dion Promises to Become More Personable
Liberal Leader Stephane Dion wants to correct misperceptions about his character.
Dion admits his leadership has been too low-profile so far, and is promising to become a more personable politician.
In an interview on Radio-Canada, Dion said “I hesitated to put myself in the foreground of the debate.”
The Liberal leader also says the party must “focus the debate on Stephane Dion, who I am and what I can do.” (cfra.com) …-

  6. The way I see it is this:
The lucre filled brown envelopes distributed by the corrupt malfeasant Liberal machine of Chretien and Paul Martin no longer exists in Quebec, hence the other socialist party, the ND is the beneficiary at the ballot box.
Taliban Jack should not read too much into the sole seat win.

  7. Calumniation by Weston. Greg Weston. He’s throwing calumny at the Librano$. But, it’s correct/true; and, it sticks forever to the Liberals.
Of course, Citoyen AdScam Dion, the erstwhile Unity Minister, knew nuttink about the money-laundering, the crime and corruption, the rape-pillage of the Canadian tax-base by the Librano$, aka Chretien-Martin-Gagliano, et al.
The regime of Chretien-Martin was indeed a kleptocracy. This is now an historical fact.
Dion is culpable. The Gomery Report is a cover-up.

  8. daniel ryan – what’s your point about parity? Is there some kind of equation you are trying to make, ie, – that IF the Canadian dollar is equal to the US dollar – it means that we are EQUAL to the US in might, strenght, power, blah blah?
It means that the US consumer can’t buy as many Canadian products as they used to; it means that we sell less to the US – our biggest consumer.
    That’s a serious problem.

  10. @ET:
“Parity” is finance jargon; it means equal in value. An old-fashioned variant is “par.” For common stocks, if the market cap is equal to the paid-up capital plus the contributed surplus, then it’s valued at “par.” For preferred stocks and bonds, “par” meant that the dividend/coupon rate and the indicated market yield (“yield to maturity” in the case of bonds) were the same. Back in the aulden days, currencies had par values, too, in terms of either gold or in a reserve currency.
You may be interested to know that, under the old gold standard, the C$ was in fact valued at par wrt the US$: “From 1 August 1854 when the Currency Act was proclaimed, until the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the Province of Canada, and subsequently the Dominion of Canada, was continuously on a gold standard. Under this standard, the value of the Canadian dollar was fixed in terms of gold. It was also valued at par with the U.S. dollar, with a British sovereign valued at Can$4.8666…”
After the gold standard was done away with, the C$ was briefly pegged at $1.10 US, but this peg didn’t last long. You may be interested to know that Canada is one of the few OECD countries whose currency has floated for most of the Bretton Woods era (1945-1971.) The rest of the countries in the Bretton Woods system ‘caught up’ with this practice as of 1971, when the system collapsed.
[Quote from this webpage: “A History Of The Canadian Dollar.”]
Oh, by the way: as of the time of this post, the C$ last traded, according to Yahoo! Canada Finance, at 99.92 cents US.

  11. McGuinty is squirming. Must be working:
Ont. Liberals demand apology for PC ad.
A new election campaign advertisement by the Progressive Conservatives is so “offensive,” party leader John Tory should apologize to the family of slain Toronto schoolgirl Jane Creba, Liberal campaign chairman Greg Sorbara said Wednesday.
The ad—one of three new campaign ads released Wednesday by the Conservatives—features a teddy bear in front of a crime scene reminiscent of where Grade 10 student Jane Creba was killed in a deadly Boxing Day shooting in 2005.
At the same time, the voiceover notes that 70% of people charged with murder in Toronto in the past four years were free on bail at the time—a fact it blames on Premier Dalton McGuinty.
“I think most people are going to be offended, and if he was man enough he would simply send the Creba family an apology,” Sorbara said after watching the new Conservative TV spots.
“This is getting into the John Tory-Kim Campbell era of negative ads when Mr. Tory was so embarrassed that he had to pull the ad.”
Interestingly, Tory himself helped manage Campbell’s disastrous 1993 campaign, which included controversial TV ads that seemed to mock then-Liberal Leader Jean Chretien’s facial deformity. The ads prompted a public backlash that helped sink Campbell’s election hopes.
“That was 14 years ago, and I think (Tory) is relying on the fact not very many people remember that,” Sorbara said.
Conservative campaign director John Laschinger insisted the commercial was not referencing the Creba shooting. It’s a “dramatization of many situations” from the Liberal years, designed to remind people there are consequences to broken Liberal promises, he said.
“The tragedy is that there’s many more families in Ontario that have lost loved ones in the last four years under Dalton McGuinty’s catch-and-release policy,” Laschinger said.
The Conservatives have yet to issue a campaign ad that features their own party policy, the Liberals noted. Earlier Wednesday, McGuinty said that campaign advertising for the Oct. 10 election by the Conservatives and New Democrats had been “negative” and laden with personal attacks.

“U.S. Scientist Sees New Ice Age Coming,” blares the headline of the July 9, 1971, article, which cautions readers that the world “could be as little as 50 or 60 years away from a disastrous new ice age, a leading atmospheric scientist predicts.”

In the Shadow of Horror, SS Guardians Frolic (Holocaust Museum reveals Auschwitz “Photo Album”)
Last December, Rebecca Erbelding, a young archivist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, opened a letter from a former United States Army intelligence officer who said he wanted to donate photographs of Auschwitz he had found more than 60 years ago in Germany.
Ms. Erbelding was intrigued: Although Auschwitz may be the most notorious of the Nazi death camps, there are only a small number of known photos of the place before its liberation in 1945. Some time the next month, the museum received a package containing 16 cardboard pages, with photos pasted on both sides, and their significance quickly became apparent.
As Ms. Erbelding and other archivists reviewed the album, they realized they had a scrapbook of sorts of the lives of Auschwitz’s senior SS officers that was maintained by Karl Höcker, the adjutant to the camp commandant. Rather than showing the men performing their death camp duties, the photos depicted, among other things, a horde of SS men singing cheerily to the accompaniment of an accordionist, Höcker lighting the camp’s Christmas tree, a cadre of young SS women frolicking and officers relaxing, some with tunics shed, for a smoking break. …-

Auschwitz through the lens of the SS: Photos of Nazi leadership at the camp
In January 2007, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received a donation of a photograph album. The inscription “Auschwitz 21.6.1944” on its first page signaled the uniqueness of the album—there are very few wartime photographs of the Auschwitz concentration camp complex, which included Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi killing center. Though his name does not appear anywhere in the album, the dates of the photographs and various decorations including adjutant cords on the uniform of the album’s owner, indicate that the album almost certainly belonged to and was created by SS-Obersturmführer Karl Höcker, the adjutant to the commandant of Auschwitz, SS-Sturmbannführer Richard Baer. Höcker was stationed at Auschwitz from May 1944 until the evacuation of the camp in January 1945. …-

  21. Where is the thug who wielded the two-by-four plank seriously injuring a man? He was up to more than “mischief”, without someone intervening he may have killed the man.
Again, it’s picking up hoodlums for show and letting potential murderers, out terrorizing taxpaying citizens, go hide in protected, untouchable territory.
The politicians had better get their asses in gear on this issue or they’ll have to send in the Army and clear the deadwood.

  23. So looking at the list of ADULTS charged in Caledonia, the Indians can no longer blame it on the “youths” (1 17year old) 1 from New York-weapons charges(should be deported…) and 2 with no fixed address. Guess these one will be let out too,as free birds. Until the band and council get a handle on these outsiders disrupting otherwise peaceful reserves this problem will continue to erupt. So, with these arrests taking place off reserve, they should face the law of this land. No more slap on the hand punishment.

  25. MaryM: If I understand natives correctly, the tribal leaders can’t control the tribesmen. End of the story. That’s why we have american Indians traveling to Canada with weapons to take part in Canadian protests, and vice versa probably.
If and as soon as any elected leader tries to calm down the militants, those declare the leader a white man’s puppet and void his leadership.
They are not an organized group by our standards.
They are not following the same protocols.
Their culture and mentality are different.
They are incompatible with our society just like Muslims.

  26. The Canadian dollar’s march from Chretien depths of 0.63 cents only 4 yeras ago, to par, is good news — mostly. (Well, if lower is better, then would you agree with, say, a 10 cent dollar ? or 1 cent ?) Happy medium somewhere.
Currency markets go up and they go down. Fact of life. They are driven by human nature, amongst other economic factors.
If you want a scary read, try “The Weight Of The Yen” by R Taggart Murphy – 1996
Could a high Canadian dollar cause deflation here ?? Yes, that’s ‘deflation’. If inflation is bad is deflation good ?? Depends who you are.
If a major American produced item in Canada was $400k 2 or 3 years ago, it could now be purchased for only $300k. (dealers willing)
Good for a purchaser today — bad for the 2004 purchaser — and the lender !!
    This made the local radio station this morning;
Canadians are now realizing they can go across the border with their par lonney and save 4 grand on an ordinary vehicle —- 10k on a pricey SUV.
This could get interesting. Say cheese. (which will now be drastically lower in price across the line — not just ‘lots’ lower)
Many public sector pension plans have a Cost Of Living clause. Deflation simply means negative inflation.
So, it depends who you are. New purchasers — happy. Old lenders — nervous.
