  1. As someone who is routinely subjected to hurricanes here in Hollywood, FL, let me tell you that the hype over these storms is overwhelming.
Dean is indeed an impressive storm with a beautiful tight cyclone (ala Andrew). The thing is, if you are not exactly on one of the northern quadrants, and close to the eye, these storms don’t amount to much more than a big windstorm.
Every single ninny in the universe calls out for emergency preparations that are nothing but a huge waste of money. People in my neighborhood don’t even bother to evacuate anymore as there is almost no mortal danger from these hurricanes. Fire has been called in the theater one too many times.
The problem is that mid-level entrenched government type ass covering bureaucrats are the ones who dictate when the evacuations orders are meted out. I for one take orders from no man, especially some county jag-off dog catchers who revel in their self-importance.
So enjoy the show, and remember these things are about as dangerous as the Aurora Borealis.

  2. Awesome colors man…Looks like the perfect Psychedelic storm and it’s headed to wipe out the Jamaican pot fields then on to devastate the grubby little head shops in the US east coast inner cities.
    😀

  3. remember these things are about as dangerous as the Aurora Borealis.
Not to a mariner. Having sailed through one I can tell you that it can become a struggle for survival. On 18 December, 1944 a Typhoon (Pacific Ocean hurricane) struck Adm. Halsey’s Task Force 38, damaging many ships and sinking 3 destroyers. 790 sailors were killed.

  4. “remember these things are about as dangerous as the Aurora Borealis”
Well, not quite dude. I’ve never gotten wet or blown around by the northern lights.
BTW: I’ve been around enough to experience both.

  5. I’m with KPD to the extent that tropical storms here in the Gulf are over-hyped. The MSM with their GW metanarrative now blow normal events this time of year out of all proportion. Every dead fish on the beach is now a GW casualty.
I respect the power of hurricanes. Anyone owning a mobile home in Florida has made a risky choice.

  6. It has come to the attention of the ODPEM that persons in the designated areas to be evacuated are refusing the Evacuation Order.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Dean, the Salvation Army and Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Churches will be established as Registration Centres for affected persons and distribution centres for relief items.

  7. I have come closer to death being stranded on the side of the road in rural Alberta by freezing.
I have also sailed open ocean through a hurricane and lived to tell about it with no damage. Scary but relatively harmless.
Canada suffers more property damage from ice damaging and heaving frozen roads than hurricanes do to peoples property.
Ill even bet that ice storms wipe out more trees and powerlines than hurricanes do.
My point is that the hurricane needs to score a virtual bulls-eye on you in order to really hurt.
The only thing that all this media hype does is clog up the Home Depot needlessly!

  8. I have also sailed open ocean through a hurricane and lived to tell about it with no damage. Scary but relatively harmless.
You were lucky. No sailor in his right mind – even on the largest ships – sails through a hurricane if it can be avoided.

  9. 1960 and 1961 were active ‘cane’ seasons. What was it like in areas farther than a 100 miles or so from the ‘eye of the storm’ ??
A catagory 5 storm is threatening Carribean Island Ex and Zed. Citizens have seen this before and are prepared but it will be tough. Aid will be forthcoming, no strings attached …. In other news, people are enjoying good times….
Fast forward to Al Gore’s 2007 world. The world of CNN ’round-the-clockers’, ‘three times an hour’ calamity-weather channels and politicians in ‘control-their-citizens-with-panic-mode’.
A rare and powerful, highest rated ‘FIVE’ is bearing down on Zed to kill people. Augmented with man-made-global-warming distructive power, people all over the world should take this pre world-ending-event as a harbinger of things to come. As David Susuki has said, we may only have another 10 or 20 years before mankind destroys spaceship-earth.
CNN, CBC, BBC, CTV and about ten thousand others will have around the clock and around the hour saturation coverage of Armagedon in the Carribean. They will replay hourly, satillite shots of the Pack-Man-like red blob chewing up and spiting out humanity. Reminding us all the time, that this, and much more to come, is all man’s fault.
At the bottom of the TV screens will be addys of places to send repent money to saviours such as Albert Gore and Suzuki.
Movies and “documentaries” will be made of this event that will be “close” to the truth. It will also be mandatory curiculum material for kids in Canada even though they have a much better chance of freezing to death than by any other climate event. The UN will be imposing a ‘Dean Tax’ on the world, independent of any Sovereign Nation’s legislation. Hopefully it will collect $$Trillions to be spent as Maurice Strong sees fit.
Hundreds of reporters will be on the scene with zoomed-in videos of broken arms while asking the victims how they feel now. But don’t worry, Neil MacDonald may invite one of the thousand of locals back to the lobby of the Marriot for the night.
In 1961 most aid money actually reached the unfortunate storm victims. In “modern times” some is spent on Canadian Prime Minister’s photo-ops —- promoting a certain brand of bottled water on the beach. Having flown half way around the world to do it, of course.

  10. Hey they named a hurricane for a leading demacrat and how about one named for AL GORE is would be mostly HOT AIR

  11. KPD:
Weird post, man. I toured the Katrina-devastated areas in New Orleons last year. Entire wards were almost empty. Many houses were marked with spray paint indicating where they had found bodies. No small thing, Katrina.
The MSM has already reported 7 (I think it is) deaths from Dean, so it’s a bit more damaging than the northern lights.
It’s one thing to be relatively wealthy and be able to flee or prepare – it’s quite another to be impoverished with no place to run.

  12. I’m thinking it wasn’t wise to stash my ill-gotten kazillions in a Grand Cayman bank on an island that’s only 20 feet above sea level at it’s highest point!
An dats all I has to say bout dat!

  13. Check out Hurricane City…great live coverage includes radio from Jamaica (available for now).

  14. Well duh yeah, hurricanes don’t cause too much damage in Canada. KPD seems to think a hurricane is a corporate conspiracy or something. I didn’t think Dippers went that far south.
A hurricane is a big TROPICAL storm and as such can kill and cause damage when it strikes. There is such a thing as media hype but for those who are living in potential hurricane zones, being prepared is a smart thing to do. The same goes for winter in the prairies. Packing a survival kit in your trunk can save your skin some time.

  15. Katrina damage was caused by a levee breech, not wind or rain as from a hurricane. Furthermore, New Orleans is and was a giant shithole and it wouldnt take much to condemn anything near the inner city.
Again my point is that I have been in the midst of numerous hurricanes and other than a few downed trees, the heavy damage is severely localized around the eye.

  16. BTW, the spray paint on the houses in NO indicates that the insurance agents have reviewed damages already in order not to duplicate assessments.

  17. KPD, which hurricanes have you been in the midst of?
Most related deaths are the result of drowning, by the way. Hurricanes may not be as dramatic as tornados, but they’re more dangerous than the northern lights, according to most scientists. Four out of five dentists, too, as I understand it. Don’t believe the hype, though.

  18. KPD
You’re full of bravado. We lived through H Ivan in G.Cayman. It wasn’t the northern lights! People are very aware of the potential for total destruction this time around. Maybe it WILL change direction, or weaken, maybe it won’t! It took TWO YEARS to get back on track. SOme people were without power for 6 MONTHS! (.Cdn power co. brought their trucks, equip and personnel down to help)
For live broadcast of ‘DEAN’ moving through Jamaica.

By the way, every tropical storm causes chaos and death in some of these countries, because of their geography. It ain’t no joke for them!
Good and fine to be an unconcerned fat cozy RICH Canadian,(or a FCR American who can drive north if he wishes) but not ok to say the people in the middle of it have nothing to be concerned about.
Hoping (and praying!)my house holds up and family stays safe.

  19. Me bad….
I just realized that KPD is merely a troll out looking to yank some chains around here.
BTW,I’ve been involved with hurricanes Rita & Claudette so far and lived under the northern lights.

  20. Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller: “We are also aware that during and after natural disasters there have been widespread attempts at looting and other threats to public safety,” “As Prime Minister I have advised the Governor General to declare a state of public emergency has arisen.”

  21. Listening to ‘power 106’ Jamaica through the night, it didn’t sound like there was much trouble with looting this time. Perhaps the preparations (curfew and boarding up of businesses) were better this time. No deaths reported so far. Seems like Cayman will just get the ‘close call’ weather, and not a repeat of ‘Ivan’. Mind you, storm surge from ‘Mitchell’ caused a lot of coastal damage (and put insurance out of reach for ordinary folks) -and ‘Mitchell was 140m. off-shore!
