Ten thousand Chinese become Christians each day, according to a stunning report by the National Catholic Reporter’s veteran correspondent John Allen, and 200 million Chinese may comprise the world’s largest concentration of Christians by mid-century, and the largest missionary force in history. If you read a single news article about China this year, make sure it is this one.

Sorry, following orders to process payment, illegal or otherwise, doesn’t measure up to following orders and murdering people. C’mon.

  14. Reporter’s Notebook: Afghanistan Is Growing
    Kabul’s economy is booming.
It doesn’t make the headlines, but the capital of Afghanistan is being transformed from a city shattered by war to a thriving metropolis with a population of 2.5 million and growing.
The catalyst for this boom is the aid money for reconstruction pouring into the country.
But as you travel around the city, it’s obvious to see that many people here are also part of the economic upturn by setting up businesses to try to grab a share of the new prosperity.
For instance, when I last visited two years ago, many of the roads here were a little more than potholed tracks.
Now, most of them have been fixed.
Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai is aiming to make those roads stretch to other countries to help boost trade.
In a recent speech at John Hopkins University, President Karzai announced his aim was to make Afghanistan a regional trade center….-

  17. …discussion of the origins of oil and gas:
    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Sciences/Earthscience/Geology/OilandGas/FormationHydrocarbon/OriginsofOil/OriginsofOil.htm
The most popular theory is known as the Organic Theory. This theory states that oil and gas have biological origins. Small sea creatures from the days when the earth was mostly covered in water died and settled to the bottom of the ocean floor
However, there is an interesting alternative theory. It is known as the Inorganic Theory and was developed by Mendeleev (he of the periodic table) in the early 1800’s. He believed that petroleum came from deep within the earth, noting how petroleum seemed to be associated with large features of the earth like mountains and valleys rather than the finer scale sedimentary deposits.

  18. This scene took place on a British Airways flight between Johannesburg, South Africa & London.
A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a Black man.
Very disturbed by this, she called the air hostess. ‘You Obviously do not see it then?’ she asked. ‘You placed me next to a Black man.
I did not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant Group. Give me an alternative seat.’
‘Be calm please,’ the hostess replied. ‘Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available.’
The hostess went away & then came back a few minutes later. ‘Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in Economy
    Class.
I spoke to the captain & he informed me that there is also no seat in Business Class. All the same, we still have one place in First Class.’
Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued. ‘It is unusual for our company to permit someone from Economy Class to sit in First Class. However, given the circumstances, the Captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting.’
She turned to the black guy & said, ‘Therefore, Sir, if you would like to, please collect your hand luggage, a seat awaits you in First Class.’
At that moment, the other passengers, who’d been shocked by what they had just witnessed, stood up & applauded.

  20. Germany moves to ban Scientology
    Tuesday, 14th August 2007. 2:23pm
    By: George Conger.
The German government rejects Scientology’s claim that it is a religion. A statement released by the German Embassy stated: “The German government considers the Scientology organisation a commercial enterprise with a history of taking advantage of vulnerable individuals and an extreme dislike of any criticism. The government is also concerned that the organisation’s totalitarian structure and methods may pose a risk to Germany’s democratic society.”
Hmm. I wonder what other cult also claims to be a religion; is a commercial and political enterprise; preys on vulnerable individuals; and has an extreme dislike of any criticism?
Oh and has murdered hundreds of millions of people, practices slavery, and openly promotes pedophilia?

  21. Pauline Hanson to oppose Islamic immigration
    August 15, 2007 02:51pm
    Article from: AAP
RIGHT-wing firebrand Pauline Hanson says she will run on similar policies to those that won her international notoriety a decade ago when she vies for a Queensland Senate seat at the upcoming election.
The main difference will be that this time the former fish and chip shop owner, who claims credit for forcing the Howard Government to adopt a harder line on immigration controls, will target Muslims.
“We need to have a look at our immigration levels and I’d like to have a look at putting a moratorium on any more Muslims coming into Australia,” she said today.
The former One Nation leader has also applied to the Australian Electoral Commission to register Pauline’s United Australia Party.
If successful, the party’s abbreviated name, Pauline, will appear above the line on the Senate ballot paper, making it easier for people to vote for Ms Hanson.
The 53-year-old populist politician today said her policies had not changed since her days as the independent MP for Queensland electorate of Oxley.

We need politicians like her in Canada. A great and important idea, for so many reasons, including our children’s future.

  22. Israelis Immigrate to Germany; Cite Vengeance, Scamming Social Programs as Motive:
“Holding her brand-new German passport, Avital Direktor, 29, of Azor, just had to laugh. “What a crazy world,” she thought to herself. “Germany’s soil is drenched with my family’s blood, and in spite of it all, I got German citizenship. I see it as taking revenge on Hitler. Sweet revenge.
“The past year has seen 4,300 Israelis receive German citizenship, according to data released this week by the Central Bureau of Statistics. The figure represents a 50 percent increase over the previous year.
Avital, who belongs to that growing group of new German citizens, had not been aware that she was entitled to a German passport until three years ago. “Like many Israelis, I was completely unaware that I was entitled to citizenship,” she said

Avital said she is not surprised by the sharp rise in demand for German citizenship among Israelis. “Look at what’s going on here. Ours is a land that devours its inhabitants. The obtuseness to the needy, the corruption. People are dying to get out of here.”
Avital hopes to study to be a sound technician in Germany. “Here, it’s expensive like you wouldn’t believe, but there, I’ll get it practically free of charge. I had intended to study it in Israel, but I just can’t afford it financially,” she explained.”

  23. Falsification Of
    The Atmospheric CO2 Greenhouse Effects
    Within The Frame Of Physics

No, I don’t totally understand all the physics, but this is a rather interesting paper that essentially debunks the idea that there is a greenhouse effect, as we understand it, whatsoever.
    Link here
    From the introductory abstract:
The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that authors trace back to the traditional
works of Fourier 1824, Tyndall 1861, and Arrhenius 1896, and which is still supported
in global climatology, essentially describes a fictitious mechanism, in which a planetary
atmosphere acts as a heat pump driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting
with but radiatively equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law
of thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist.

  26. Australian pol to oppose Islamic immigration
    By Robert Spencer
When will an American politician dare to say this? Officials should proclaim a moratorium on all visa applications from Muslim countries, since there is no reliable way for American authorities to distinguish jihadists and potential jihadists from peaceful Muslims. Because this is not a racial issue, these restrictions should not apply to Christians and other non-Muslim citizens of those countries, although all should be subjected to reasonable scrutiny. Those who claim that such a measure is “Islamophobic” should be prepared to provide a workable way for immigration officials to distinguish jihadists from peaceful Muslims, or, if they cannot do so, should not impede basic steps the U.S. should take to protect itself. And Muslims entering from anywhere — Britain, France — should be questioned as to their adherence to Sharia and Islamic supremacism. This is not because anyone will expect honest answers, but so that answers proven false by the applicant’s subsequent activity can become grounds for deportation.
Not only reasonable, but wise. Not only wise, but absolutely necessary.

  28. I disagree with Charest on this:
    http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2007/08/15/4420495-cp.html
He feels that parties should not run candidates against PQ Leader Pauline Marois — why ever not? Are constituents to be denied electorial choice just because a party leader is running in their riding? An undemocratic precedent as I see it. Also, Charest’s suggestion that Dumot’s position is “immature” is arrogant.

It’s PETA vs. Hamas. I’m not taking bets on who’ll come out on top. Animal rights group slams Hamas TV clip of man abusing cats, lions.
International animal rights group PETA on Wednesday condemned a “shocking and sickening” video clip produced by a Hamas-run TV station and posted on the YouTube Web site that showed the abuse of animals.
PETA said it would protest to the TV station over the program that showed animals being abused as part of a program aimed at teaching children not to hurt animals.
The clip prompted scores of complaints from viewers worldwide.
“It’s shocking and sickening,” said Martin Mersereau, manager of the domestic animal abuse division of U.S.-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Mersereau said PETA was drafting a letter of protest to the Gaza-based Al-Aqsa television station.
