54 Replies to “They’re Broke”

  1. Spouting about how direct quotes are “lies”
    Lmao.
The plane thing isn’t all that damming, they did not use Air Canada previously… It might however be telling that the planes they used in previous campaigns… are from companies that no longer exist.
And even more funny is how they are touting a few homemade ads on the internet with only 1000 hits each as a response to broad based tv spots.
The liberal party has been reduced to a mere shadow of the clown they put in charge.

  2. Air Canada just spilled the beans. The Liberals have exceeded their credit card limits. Toooo Funny. Can’t imagine the fury at the Lib camp. After all these years of giving Air Canada preferential treatment they refuse our credit card. If we were in power…. ROTFL

  3. I’m thinking some of those other airline companies recognize the number on caller ID.
Recall the last election campaign, when Paul Martin’s plane would inexplicably “break down”?
It always smelled more like someone ensuring the account was brought up to date than it did mechanical problems.

  4. Jason Cherniak aka “Captain Underpants” to the rescue.
In other news, Andrew Coyne is yet again having a meltdown on his own blog while Paul Wells argues with Coyne commenters.

  5. Let’s be honest here, the demographic of those truly engaged by politics and the demographic of computer savvy You Tube users/video creators really don’t overlap very much. Voting demographics in Canada consistently show younger voters are generally disengaged by politics. The Liberals are welcome to use You Tube as much as they want, like most blogs, it’s preaching to the choir!!! So Jason and his gang are talking amongst themselves, because the LPC can’t afford anything else, while the CPC is slamming them at home.

  6. Can’t steal money anymore to pay their bills to keep buying power. And to think there were and continue to be those stupid enough to vote for these money theives called lieberals. Look in the mirror lieberal voter then look at your children and explain how you could have voted or will vote for people who will resort to anything and steal money from their pockets to regain power.

  7. Maybe if several (or more), of us ‘Concerned-Compassionate-Conservatives’, in the spirit of sportmanship, sent the Liberal Party 5-10 cents of our Canadian Tire money, it might help…
Is that allowed? Anybody know the address?

  8. And I wonder if Boob Rae will wear holes in his silk stockings walking everywhere?

  9. “If Stephen Harper and the Conservatives are attacking Stephane Dion, maybe it’s because they’re scared,” a female voice intones in one of the radio spots. “Scared of his ideas, perhaps. Scared of his green plan. Scared … of losing power?”
The gall in this statement is breathtaking, both in chutzpa and stupidity. Do they even realize who their intended audience is?
“Sometimes I meet someone and I thought he is a nominee, he’s not yet or she is not yet. So we don’t have an exact number to communicate today, but I know that we are making progress.” (DION)
    Not ready for Prime Time.

  10. Damn.. that “send the Liberal Party of Canada your Canadian Tire money” idea is almost worth launching as a blog campaign.

  11. Maybe Harper could lease Hans Island to the Libs (as an election-headquarters site), thereby getting them, and the Danes, finally out of our hair.

  12. The nice thing is, that the Libs being broke is not only a foreshadowing of their inability to gain support via advertising,
it’s a reflection of their current lack of support.
Nothing says “I love you” in political terms like a cash donation.

  13. Love the radio ad: “If Stephen Harper and the Conservatives are attacking Stephane Dion, maybe it’s because they’re scared — scared of his ideas, perhaps?”
Well actually, no, they’re chasing a squirrel out of the house. The fact that the squirrel’s foreign policy is based on a series of non-sequiteurs is neither here nor there.
    But check it out anyway:
Reader’s Digest: If you become prime minister, what would you do about Afghanistan?
Dion: I voted for it when there were clear parameters — for instance, being able to intervene elsewhere at the same time. But now the government says that we cannot intervene in Darfur and that we must make our Afghanistan mission more substantial. Prime Minister Harper blackmailed the House last spring, saying, “If you don’t do what I want, I may call an election on it,” dividing the nation about something that should unite us. And he did it without any clear mandate about this extention. What will Canada’s role be, and what will the government of Afghanistan’s role be? What will other countries do? I would not be like Jack Layton and leave Afghanistan in dishonour. I would say to other countries, “Look at the big picture. There are other situations in the world where we might be more helpful.” It’s not just about military intervention. What will we do about Afghanistan’s poppy crop? And its border with Pakistan is wide open. If we want to continue to risk the lives of our soldiers to provide more security for the people of Afghanistan, we need to have a plan and a strategy that makes sense.
RD: So, what would you do?
Dion: I would work closely with our allies to develop Afghanistan into a functional state. We need to stop taking a neo-conservative approach. We need to believe in the role of governments to help the market economy work in Afghanistan.

  14. In the same interview, Dion was asked how he would improve Canada’s health-care system: “The link between environment and health is key…”
Earlier: “If I become prime minister, every minister will be green.”
    …and hopping from one lily-pad to another…

  15. I’ve got about two dollars’ worth of Canadian Tire money I can donate to a bad cause. Maybe we should send some to Garth as well?

  16. after making a couple small appliance purchases at Can Tire today,I’m feeling rather flush!Got almost $3.00 in Can.Tire money…where do I send it Kate? Good sale on bicycles at C.Tire..I’m sure all those green libs would be more than happy,to peddle their a$$es around on the campaign trail!Could I put my money towards a bike for Ralph Goodale??

  17. Donate only your time to keep the liberals in the wilderness. I like this from Rempelia Prime –

Never Back Down. Never Give Up.
And never take your boot off the throat of the Liberal Party. Or should we be pulling our punches and taking it easy on a party that defeated us for thirteen straight years?

  18. If you really want to screw the Lieberals and at the same time remind them that you remember… send them a cheque for exactly 68 cents. It costs them more than 68 cents to handle that cheque.

  19. Chucker:
“Never has a party sued so many people for saying so many unfair things about them.”
    The best from chuckercanuck’s comments…
    joe said…
Actually the Libs are only suing people so they can rent an airplane for their leader in the upcoming election. …-
    It’s LibAiration.

  20. If they would only ban long term loans for political parties versus overdrafts and short term revolvers. The loans are a way to circumvent financing rules. Dont think for one minute that the credit decision to make a loan that is unlikely to be paid back isnt a donation.
Best part of this is the Libs got left in such a bad state by JC and Martin, thy both have to wear this, that that they could only keep the scheme going when they were in power or likely to be in power. Thats what happens when your followers only believe in power.
And yes Kate i agree with you, I am sure Martin’s campaign was slowed down by fuel accounts being in arrears or exceeding credit limits. A plane that broke down that often should have been pulled out of the air by transport Canada.
Of course none of the bright young things travelling in journalist class thought to poke around the airline fuel companies to get info on state of the account.
All you need to do is buy a beer for the guys who work the shift on the tarmac

  21. “Never has a party sued so many people for saying so many unfair things about them.”
Brought to you by the Libel Party of Canada

  22. “Could I put my money towards a bike for Ralph Goodale??”
    Sammy
The Libs already have a “town bike” they call her Bulinda.

  23. With Powercor and Magna. BofM, CIBC and the Montreal Mob support just a phone call away…and the supply of BC Librano pot crops at peak, the Libranos are far from “Broke”.
What is more telling is that the Librano party owners have no faith in DeYawn to deliver a Majority so they are giving the party pocket money to go through the efforts….this election will be another Liberal loss and all their insiders know it..the restructuring was not deep enough to remove the old faces that still elicit distrust in the public….it will, however be the perfect opportunity to highlight potential rock star leadership hopefuls and parade them around the nation with Librano colors on….say mini me PET or some other dark horse candidates that will be replacing old worn out librano bag men as the party controllers rid themselves of electoral liability luggage at the nominations.
This is a wait and see election for Libranos and their financial owners.

  24. Calgary Grit Blogspot
“I’m sympathetic to the fact that most of the people who used to handle our Quebec ads are in jail these days but surely there’s someone in the province who could have done better than this?”
As my Granny used to say, “They’re telling on themselves.”

  25. “Sometimes I meet someone and I thought he is a nominee…”
Everytime Dion opens his mouth, his English tutor loses another pupil.

  26. WLM,
Worthwhile point of distinction, the Liberal Party is broke but its supporters arent.
Yes it speaks volumes that they dont want to throw good money after bad….they are neither positively motivated, I believe in this guy, I think he can win
    or
    negatively motivated
Harper is doing a bad job/ gotta go/ corrupt
But this is a longstanding thing for the Libs. Even at their height under JC, while they were liquid they were never really setup propely.
Another reason why I believe that even if the CPC is close to a majority the camoaign will be their’s partially because the other guy wont show up and when he does there will be lots of mistakes and misteps that come from underpaid or unpaid handlers.
IF the cons needed to run a carbon neutral campaign they should ensre they pick a Canadian project fits their message rather than sending overseas….MAy is going to take the train….good freaking luck in a campaign
WOuldnt it be nice to ask each of the news organizations to contribute money to cover the carbon costs of their weight on the plane. Because shouldnt it all be carbon neutral or reduced…..by the way I think this carbon neutral stuff is ridiculous.

  27. If the conservatives are scared of De-yawn could it be said that it is because he is scary, very scary? Inquireing minds want to know. Does De-yawn use botox? His stiff upper lip does not seem to move. Botox or mental paralysis?

  28. Dion’s stiff upper lip? I don’t mean to be rude and I think poking fun at a politicians physical characteristics is schoolyard crass BUT when I look at Dion it looks like HE HAS NO LIPS.
Like, he has a mouth and you can see it moving but it is like his mouth is pursed in that prissy way that you lampoon a fuddy duddy school marm.
Like condescending, tut tut. Shame on all of you children. I am the professor here and everything the Dion says is to be listened to because otherwise I will give you a big fat F on your term papers.
Maybe because he was a professor of marxism/socialism he is used to the role of mini dictator in the classroom where “he is the boss of you or else” and if a student challenged his great wisdom he could flunk him.
Just does not work in the real world do you think.
Not trying to be “lippy” here.

  29. speaking of lieberal financial mismanagement, the local former lieberal mp walked away from a former cabinet post to run in the recent municipal election.
and lost to a photo-op specialist.
in today’s rag ’tis detailed how he blew five times as much on a costly telephone system, 1/4 of the campaign budget, and thus lacked enough to duke it out with the ads.

  30. Dion’s resemblance to Kermit, both in appearance and croaking voice is uncanny.
It’s not easy being green. Or setting priorities.

  31. Got to thinking – Do you think we will now see a scandal involving Air Canada? The Libs went after their best buddies the RCMP when it seemed to the Libs that the RCMP betrayed them and it cost the Libs the last election. Maybe they will resurrect the Airbus scandal with a twist and implicate Milton instead of Mulroney. Nothing more vindictive than a slighted Liberal.

  32. About those Liberal finances. They are paying Marth Hall Findley big bucks to work on recruiting women; they are paying our favourite rude-nick Mr. Buttinski interuptis the worst media interview panelist Gerard Kennedy big bucks for election readiness; maybe Bobby Rae the multi-millionaire lawyer big bucks to write the NDP Premier version of a Liberal policy and a bunch more hangers on in the backrooms.
Knowing how this all works my spidey sense thinks that maybe, just maybe, some Liberal big bucks corporations like, say, PowerCorp, Magna, etc. just MIGHT be paying these people’s salaries and not the Liberal party.
That is how the old “loaned executive” program used to work. The salaries don’t have to be counted as political donations and Liberal friendly firms can shovel hundreds of thousands of dollars to the party through this back door.
Remember AdScam. The ad agencies were forced to put Liberal political operatives on their payroll. These operatives did NO work for the companies that paid them or no work significant to the salaries paid.
How can one find out if the Liberal party has a bunch of “loaned executives” running around out there. Who is really paying Marth, Gerrard and others?
With the new rules this would be a huge breech of the rules.

  33. I just don’t get this… the Lieberals give billions to Bombardier in grants, forgivable loans and probably, under the table cash for over a decade, and they can’t find anyone to give/lease/lend them a plane?
Guess there is truth in the adage “There is no honor among thieves.”

  34. No company can “give” anything to a political party. Remember the new rules. Individuals only. AND only up to a value of $1000.
However, I am sure the Liberal braintrust who know every loophole and cover butt tactic will find a way.
Say, 100 Bombardier guys just happen to all give $1000 to the Liberal party of candidate “personally.” (remember Volpe’s Abotech contributors – even the kids!!!)
Of course they would be giving just out of the goodness of their little political hearts and to celebrate the $1000 bonuses they got from the good old corp.

  35. Remember Dion’s big cross-country tour, the one he embarked on with great media fanfare back on Friday, March 2? I’m starting to think it was a dry run for the upcoming campaign. Some news reports actually used the word “campaign” when they wrote about it.
I went back and spent a few hours in infomart to refresh my own memory. The breathless news reports said Dion’s tour would take him to 27 constituencies from coast to coast in 17 days, “to counter charges that he is little known.”
At the time I thought it was the Liberals’ only available response to the first round of TV ads purchased last month by the Conservatives.
(I love it that the Tories are swimming in so much cash they can afford to buy attack ads between elections while the Liberals are still broke and millions in debt).
But still: the Tories are forced to spend money to buy favorable attention they will never be able to earn from Canada’s media monopolies.
The Liberals, on the other hand, can usually just hit the road and get favourable coverage. Except this time.
Judging by the media record Dion’s tour left he behind, media coverage of the next contest could be a trainwreck for the Liberals.
I read dozens of news accounts of that tour, and NOT ONE mentioned how many people attended any of Dion’s events in Halifax, Dartmouth, Kingston, Quebec City (event cancelled) Toronto (“Stephane Dion was in Toronto yesterday. Somewhere . . . aides would not say where he was in Toronto, when he would be appearing or with whom he would be meeting)” The Pas, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Streetsville, London, Ont. . . .
After 17 days on the road, not a single media report in the online archives of Infomart indicates how many people were at any of Dion’s events.
When event crowds are embarassingly sparse for Stephen Harper, the media ALWAYS notes the fact. If there is no mention at all of Dion’s success as a crowd magnet, that can only mean one thing: there aren’t any.
Maybe he won’t need that plane after all during next election.

  36. Re: no money Liberals. Clearly they aren’t hiring expensive wordmasters. How good do you have to be to ressurect Chretien lines – hidden agenda, not our values; now Harper bad man, big bully, not nice, big fat meanie.
The infantile Liberal talking points show the depths to which they’ve sunk. They haven’t come up with a single coherent policy option (def’n-something that makes sense without being changed every five days).
I have never seen political forces marshalled to this extent to STOP AN ELECTION. Really it is quite telling and not lost on the Tory strategy team. BTW, opposition has already handed Tories election issue, the took government legislation and turned it into left wing Kyoto cult crap, complete with carbon taxes, credits and feel good BS. Accoring to Jack Layton, amending a Tory bill into a left wing wacko bill is “compromise” and “allowing parliament to work.”
How bad is Jack Layton when Stephane Dion is outperforming him? Spring election in air, with worst case scenario being larger Tory minority (though I think it will be majority).
When your enemies tell you not to do something, generally means they are afraid of you doing it. Bring it on!!

  37. Gilligan’s Island,
Sorry to jump in so late, but please don’t insult Capt Underpants in the future. I read that to my kids and the image of Jason Cherniak in his underwear will possibly cause me to stop reading bedtime stories for a while.
    Back to the main topic,
The Prime Minister should continue to govern. The Libs must have some time to bath in their troubles while we build up our campaign war chests. Let’s be careful and enjoy the return of good government.

  38. Broke? Who? We? Not when Isabel necessaryily gives up/donates/relinquishes her stash; voluntarily; for the good of the cause; she better, or else, eh, Gag?
    …-
Largest contribution made to Liberal Women’s Political Fund
    March 29, 2007
Ottawa – The single largest contribution to the Judy LaMarsh Fund was received thanks to past Liberal candidate, Isabel Metcalfe who transferred the entire surplus from her campaign -$11,049.77 – to the Liberal Party of Canada …-

  39. Harper has been described as playing political chess while his opponents are playing checkers. Given the fact that the conservatives raise far more money from small donations than the libs or the dippers, the new rules of political financing heavily favour the conservatives. I wonder if Harper’s strategy with these pinprick add campaigns is to simply bleed the liberals white before launching the actual election campaign.

  40. I think that Gerard Kennedy clearly deserves the adulation of Canadian conservatives everywhere for stiffing the crooked Liberal Party of Big Cities with such a complete loser in Steve Dion.
A bush league party with a bush league leader.
How much better can it get for the CPC?

  41. I cannot watch Dion anymore without laughing after the Conservative ad where Iggy wrips him a new one.

  42. Last election I tried to donate $.01 via credit card to the LPC. They didn’t process the donation – ungrateful b*stards. On a different note re: the Canadian Tire Money – some of the children’s summer camps will accept Canadian Tire money from parents who have a hard time coming up with the funds to send their kids to camp. I would rather donate my funny money to send a kid to camp than to the LPC.

  43. Gerard Kennedy is nearly as rude and inflammatory as Scott Reid, but Borat Dion is quite possibly the worst choice the Libs have made in my lifetime. Even John Turner…..eep! John Turner?
The Libs seemed to understand that they will not be “getting back to power as soon as possible” and have made Dion the sacrificial lamb. The man’s ego is so big he really believes he is going to get nation-wide support. The Liberal braintrust knows he’s the substitute until their fortunes improve. Then they’ll pull the plug on Borat, and the new leader will look extremely impressive in contrast.
Never underestimate this group of cunning thieves. We bought “the loveable buffoon” act from Chretien for thirteen years. They may look like they are down, but they most certainly are not out. They are biding their time, and quite possibly grooming the next charismatic scoundrel to be their real leader. Their sheer hatred of Stephen Harper must have the liberal schemers and plotters booking lots of overtime. Remember Chretien’s simple words from an election many moons ago : “We have the people, we have the plan.”
Read what you want into those eerily prophetic words.
