  1. If I had some fresh mint I’d have a Julep. I look forward to the Derby. It’s a right of spring.

    1. I love the south: take a drink that’s essentially two-and-a-half ounces of straight Kentucky whiskey sweetened with sugar and flavored with mint and name it something you’d expect to find an unbrella in. Three or four of these and you’re going to spend some time on the floor. As Dorothy Parker said about the martini:

“I like to have a martini,
      Two at the very most.
After three I’m under the table,
after four I’m under my host.”

I’m betting the Mint Julep has done far more damage in its time to the unsuspecting than has the martini.

Good quote. The Mint Julep is a delicious but deadly drink. It’s best made with good bourbon not that Jack Daniels crap.

I too love the south. Read a bunch of southern authors this winter.

        1. Agreed. Never use Tennessee dishwater to make a Mint Julep, just like you’d never use bourbon to make a Manhattan. The Manhattan requires a good Canadian Rye. Tennessee Williams is one of my favourite playwrights. I’m not sure if I’ve read his complete works, but I’ve read him extensively.

          1. Tennessee Williams is one of the best. I think William Faulkner is in his own league.

Some southern gals worth reading: Flannery O’Connor, Caroline Gordon Harper Lee of course.

        2. Makers Mark is the only bourbon that is decent to use in a mint julep.

  2. Link? Castle Butte, SK is what I get. Quite stunning.

A few weeks ago, during self-isolation lockdown madness, my husband surprised me with a “staycation road trip” to Louisville. We ate The Hot Brown for lunch, barbeque for dinner, and Johnny Cake waffles with peach pecan syrup for Sunday breakfast. We watched Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown races with Secretariat, Affirmed, and American Pharoah. We also watched Disney’s “Secretariat” and drank some bourbon. Disappointed we will have to wait for this year’s Run for the Roses. We’ll still have some bourbon, though.

    1. Damn but you are one lucky lady. But did you have grits with it? Gotta have grits.

      1. I AM one lucky lady! No grits though. I never did acquire a taste for them but darling daughter did!

And, Gentlemen, I beg to differ regarding the bourbon. Neat, with only a drop or two of cool water. I even converted my husband to ditching the ice and he heartily agrees with me!

  3. While on the subject of equestrian activities, the difference between the Kentucky Derby and an election is that in the race, the entire horse wins.

  4. This would have been the perfect race for Man O’War. Wasn’t entered in the Derby so missed out on the Triple Crown. Could have been a chance at virtual redemption the GOAT horse.

  5. If they can race in Florida, it seems like they could have found a way to run the Derby. If they do manage to run it in the fall though, it will be a kind of spring.
