The Chinese Communists do bear a legacy from leftism. As we know all too well, the search for “root causes”,
“a fundamental solution to tackle poverty, unemployment and inequality in less-developed southern Xinjiang” is a waste
of time. We might suggest that forced conversion to Christianity would be a good idea and might work; attempting to
alleviate “root causes”, when the root cause is religious fanaticism, is totally counterproductive.
Alternatively, the Chinese could reopen some of their old “re-education” camps …

I motorcycled across Xinjiang last year. It’s an occupied country. It is totally different from the rest of China, it has no cultural relationship with anything to the east.
Military checkpoints restricting travel are everywhere, APC’s patrol the streets, sandbag bunkers are at major intersections and infantry patrols of 40 troops carrying rifles, shields and spiked clubs were common. Many stores have riot gear piled near the front door. Often my cellphone was blocked, I wasn’t legally allowed to use internet cafes and internet in small towns is restricted to LAN’s only.
The Uighers I met were pretty friendly, and even though it was Ramadan there were still bars open, liquor in stores and food served all day everywhere. About half the Uighers I talked with identified their nationality as Turks and half as Chinese. They weren’t very religious, this isn’t Muslims vs Civilization, this is an evil empire conquering a weaker country. The Han Chinese treat the Uighers like shit. The Han I talked with would rather die than intermarry.
The Uighers are being economically marginalised, herded, corralled, and
will eventually be wiped out. Whether that takes 10 years or 200 is fine with the Communist Party.
I hope ISIS decides to go east before they come west and send some reinforcements to China. That should be fun to watch.
