Thanks for the blog Kate…looking forward to the baby pix.

  2. About the climate nerds at ClimateAudit destroying Al Gore’s Nobel-winning film, I think the best comment is:
“Al’s going to be sorry he ever invented the internet…”

  3. Regarding the Swift Boaters, I heard on Foxnews this morning that T. Boone Pickens (Texas oilman) has offered to bet Kerry $1,000,000 that he can’t disprove any single claim the Swift Boat vets made. Proceeds to go to the charity of the winners choice.

  4. Today’s Washington Times has an article titled “Canadians see some silver lining in global warming”. It refers to a 1997 study by bunch of American University guys. The study says:
“Given these regional results, it is no surprise that some countries are winners and
others are losers. Table 5 presents net market results for selected countries around the
world. The former Soviet Union, Canada, China and the United States receive the largest
net annual benefits. Their cool climates turn warming into gains, their large economies
lead to large energy effects, and their large land masses suggest more coast line, agriculture,
    forestry, and water impacts.”
Table 5 estimates that a 2C warming by 2060 would INCREASE Canada’s GDP by 3.9% (that’s 70B$!). Environment Canada published in 1998 a study detailing the impact of climate change on the various provinces: Quebec and Ontario came out clear winners.
You’d think that Canadians would have heard about it, and that this issue would be the subject of discussion and policy. I guess our politicians at the time were too busy pitying polar bears and selling us Kyoto.

  5. You*ll love this if you like to know how the scam and kickback artists work.
From Steve Cameron*s new blog. He wrote ** On the Take ** came out in 1994.
This is such a can of worms… I don*t know where to start..[TG]
** Once Karlheinz Schreiber started splitting up the millions of dollars in secret commissions paid by Airbus, Thyssen and MBB (Messerschmidt-Bolkow-Blohm) to help obtain huge government contracts in Canada, there was enough money going round for some serious real estate.
Frank Moores’ lobbying firm, Government Consultants International, worked on all these contracts and he began by buying, with a friend, a beautiful fishing camp in the Gaspe in 1989 for between $150,000 and $200,000 and renovating it.
We don’t know if it was money from Schreiber that paid for this place because Moores had many major companies among his clients, but we do know that he used the first payments from the Airbus sales to Air Canada, payments that rolled into his firm in 1990, to buy a $200,000 condo in an exclusive gated community in Jupiter, Florida.
Giorgio Pelossi, Schreiber’s accountant, wired him the money he needed from the accounts Schreiber set up to hold the secret commissions.
In 1989, both the Doucet brothers, Fred and Gerry – now both of them working as lobbyists on Schreiber’s projects – bought themselves condos in Ste. Petersburg, Florida.

  6. “YouTube Islamist arrested for threats to Christian political leader.
    Posted: Saturday, November 17, 2007, 10:01 (GMT)
A man who placed an “obituary” on YouTube of one of the leading opponents of plans to build Europe’s biggest mosque near the London Olympics site has been arrested by police.
The video, “In memory of Councillor Alan Craig”, features the Leader of the Christian Peoples Alliance party, his wife and two daughters.
The two-minute video, which has now be taken down, was added by a man calling himself “abdullah1425” and was set to the strains of Elvis Presley’s song Always On My Mind and opened with its title and the words ‘To God we will all return’.
It featured a boxing scene with an Asian punching an opponent to the ground before ending with the message: “The mosque will be built in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.”
When the video was uploaded to Youtube, there was a web link from the Abbey Mills mega-mosque website to abdullah1425’s YouTube mini website, where he identifies himself as Muhammad, 23, from Stevenage, Herts. It also had links to material relating to Tablighi Jamaat.
In one comment to another user posted on the site he said: “Jihad starts from the moment your mother gave birth to you.” Police have taken a statement about the video from Cllr Craig. The man behind the posting has now been bailed to return to a police station in Hertfordshire.”
    Good.

  8. I just had a brainwave aboput Karlheinz Schreiber and the Liberal’s desparate attempts in collusion with him to make sure he does NOT get deported to Germany.
This may have NOTHING to do with Mulroney – that is just the pretext.
When this man goes to Germany he is being charged with bribery, tax evasion, influence peddling, forgery and fraud- much of it wrapped up in political collusion and possible corruption.
If he goes to Germany there will be court cases where he and others will be giving evidence. Up to now all of this has been suppressed because the scammer is still in Canada.
What if high level Liberals or some of their high rolling corporate backroom international business power brokers were ALSO involved with Schreiber in the German corruption?
Here is more legal loopholes to keep him here. Apprently after a person facing deportation has exhausted and lost all court challenges to stave off deportation then if they are not sent back within 45 days the deportation order becomes null and void.
So…..in keeping woth this line of thought – Karlheinz has lost ALL court challenges – he is going to try one more time…or not. The clock has begun ticking. If Canada does not send him back within 45 days he is a free man in Canada and cannot be sent to Germany to face the charges and “spill the beans” on his partners in the fraud.
He has until Dec.1 already – that is two weeks. The Liberals only have to scream blue murder to give him one more month – to the first part of January to stay here and VOILA!!!
German justice loses…and the organized criminals behind the scenes (who must be Liberal connected considering who is doing the coaching and screeching) all get off Scot free.
    Any merit to this?

  9. Andrew Nikiforuk has a typical “impassioned piece” (which is to say “incoherent rant”) about how big corporations are giving everyone cancer in the book section of the Globe today. Catch how he characterizes the Chinese government though:
“While China now leads a global economic boom, it’s also exploring new opportunities for cancer. Even its secretive, Ottawa-like government now concedes that the country’s industries use the nation’s rivers as industrial urinals.”

  11. Mr. Botting, author of Canadian Extradition Law Practice, said that the habeas corpus provisions of the Extradition Act would allow Mr. Schreiber to apply to a judge to be set free if he is not sent to Germany within 45 days after his legal appeals are exhausted. That would cancel his extradition, he said.
That 45-day clock started ticking on Thursday, when the Ontario Court of Appeal rejected Mr. Schreiber’s latest appeal, but it would be reset if his lawyers seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.

  12. hey, I not sure of exactly all the claims the Swiftboaters made against Kerry (he wasn’t really injured or something like that) but I was able to see the film Winter Soldier – very moving and very powerful – I always thought that conservatives were the ones who supported the troops – only if they say the right things? These were ordinary young men who were trying to express the pain and shame and confusion about some of the horrible things they saw and yes did. Does this mean soldiers are monsters – no! it means that war can be hell and can make good people do horrible things – most german and soviets soldiers were loving sons and fathers and yet committed horrible atrocities. Politics dicates that this is something that cannot be spoken of in America still – because we are all good and they(whoever the enemy happens to be)are all evil. Truth has no chance in war or politics.

British soldiers defeat Taliban suicide attack
    UK MoD Defence News
British soldiers serving in southern Afghanistan have foiled a suicide car bomber who attempted to attack their patrol as they were returning to base.
The incident, which lasted a matter of seconds, happened as the soldiers, from 473 Special Observation Post Battery, 5 Regiment Royal Artillery, were heading back to the camp in Gereshk. A white Toyota Corolla, which contained a suicide car bomber, suddenly pulled out and attempted to drive into their convoy of Pinzgauer vehicles.
The first Pinzgauer swerved to avoid the car and the top cover sentry, Corporal Lee Wilbor, fired a single shot through its window, causing the driver to collapse at the wheel. But the Toyota carried on, swerving erratically into the path of the rear vehicle, whose soldiers opened fire causing the car to veer out of the way before it dramatically exploded.
Describing the incident, Captain James Ashworth, said:
“Initially I thought ‘what is this guy up to’, as the local traffic usually pulls over. I then shouted a warning; fortunately my top cover sentry, Corporal Wilbor, was in an ideal position to fire a single well aimed round. The rear vehicle then opened fire on the target and the bomb detonated. Luckily it was now between our two vehicles and we were sufficiently far apart from the blast not to sustain any serious injuries.”
    Corporal Darren Clark, the driver of the front vehicle, said;
“As soon as I saw the car heading towards us, I knew it must be a suicide bomber, I veered off but he still managed to clip the rear of the Pinzgauer, at the same time, Frodo [Corporal Lee Wilbor] got a round off at him and then the rear vehicle opened fire. The white vehicle then detonated; I felt shrapnel flying over our heads; I was told to stop but the explosion had blown the brakes, so it took me a while. We then jumped out and got to business in clearing up.”
Corporal Sandy Blunt, Top Cover sentry of the rear vehicle, said; …

Jeffrey Ressner at Politico asked Valerie Plame about her post-CIA plans.
Q: Anyone you’d like to see direct the picture? Martin Scorsese or Oliver Stone or …
A: No, not Oliver Stone. I don’t think I really have any say in the matter, but George Clooney has shown a deft hand behind the camera as well as in front of it. I thought ā€œGood Night and Good Luckā€ was so well done; it took a brief period of our country’s history and showed how analogous it is to what’s going on today with the government using fear as a weapon.
Q: Who do you think should play you and your husband?

A Last Warning on Global Warming
The language of science, like that of the United Nations, is by nature cautious and measured. That makes the dire tone of the just-released final report from the fourth assessment of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a network of thousands of international scientists, all the more striking. Global warming is “unequivocal.” Climate change will bring “abrupt and irreversible changes.” The report, a synthesis for politicians culled from three other IPCC panels convened throughout the year, read like what it is: a final warning to humanity.[…]

  26. You silly boys: blondes make men act dumb
WHEN men meet fair-haired women they really do have a ā€œblonde momentā€. Scientists have found that their mental performance drops, apparently because they believe they are dealing with someone less intelligent.
Researchers discovered what might be called the ā€œbimbo delusionā€ by studying men’s ability to complete general knowledge tests after exposure to different women. The academics found that men’s scores fell after they were shown pictures of blondes.
Further analysis convinced the team that, rather than simply being distracted by the flaxen hair, those who performed poorly had been unconsciously driven by social stereotypes to ā€œthink blondeā€.

  27. A fascinating profile of Vladimir Zhirinovsky — counterrevolutionary Black Hundreds pogrom-maker or something else?
Take No Remarks at Face Value
If politics is a world of paradox and scandal, then Vladimir Zhirinovsky is the poster boy.
Zhirinovsky’s boisterous talk is full of ultranationalism, yet his party is called liberal-democratic. He is notorious for starting fistfights in the parliament, yet his deputies resemble low-key bureaucrats more than thugs.
He relishes throwing slander at opponents, yet even liberal political analysts grudging admit that he is a gifted populist.
Zhirinovsky only accepted that his father was Jewish after years of denial and anti-Semitic tirades. And he is accused of being a KGB tool used to create a pseudo-opposition in the waning days of the Soviet Union.

BTW, Are you familiar at all with the Centre for the Study of Political Islam? I bought the trilogy from them – Sira/Haddith/Koran — little red soft covers. The Koran is organized chronologically; there’s also a abridged Koran which leaves out all the duplication etc. They limit the content to what would be of value to non-believers, leaving out a lot of the internal muslim stuff like how to pee, drink a glass of water, walk into the bathroom, the finer points of personal hygiene etc. I’d read quite a bit about Islam (Bostom, Bat Ye’or, Phares, Warraq) but up to now, not the foundational texts as such. Not fun! Even more convinced that Islam is un-reformable. Grim.
