This black and white Reuter’s photo taken at almost the same time, seems to show larger pupils. It may be a matter of resolution or camera angle, but one still has to wonder about the editorial wisdom at Canadian Press in allowing a photo to be used with this degree of colour distortion.
I didn’t notice the eyes the first time I looked at it. Must be the same guy that did Condi Rice.

Well, when I first saw the photo, I too thought it was possibly selected to make Stephen look scary. Also, the caption said something about “vapor emissions” which seemed to be worded to make the reader think more “hot air” from yet another politician. Finally, many Canadian Press stories I’ve seen so far this election are worded in a way as to portray the Conservatives in a negative light.
You can’t blame us (conservatives) for being a little sensitive about media bias, after the MSM’s blatant attacks on Harper in the last few weeks of the ’04 election.
MSM SUCKS.

CBC’s “This Week in Pictures” for the election has 16 photos. Of the four that depict Harper, only one is positive and showing him smiling. In contrast, the pictures of the other leaders are of them are all positive, except arguably, one of PM shivering because he wishes, like his ships, he was somewhere warmer.
The actual caption with this particular picture of Harper also notes that he “exhales vapours”, which is neither substantive or particularly positive.

First, in June I interrupted a speech by Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew to pour fake blood on his hands. Second, during Paul Martin’s first Montreal speech of the current federal election campaign I heckled the PM from the back of a large hotel ballroom shouting �Martin lies, Haitians die� and threw confetti into the air that highlighted Canada’s role in overthrowing the elected government and supporting the brutal Haitian Police.
Both times I was quickly taken into custody by security officials and questioned by Montreal police.
After the first incident I was released after a night in jail. I was cited for disturbing the peace (a charge for assault with a weapon and assaulting police were immediately dropped). That charge was dropped two months later in return for a legal pledge not to come within 200 metres of the Honourable Mr. Pettigrew, his office or otherwise communicate with the Minister for a year.
After the second incident I spent over four days in jail before being able to defend myself. I have been charged with breaking my conditions (�keep the peace�) from the first incident, disturbing the peace and using fake documents (it seems this relates to a press pass in my possession).
In addition I have been forbidden from coming within 500 metres of any Member of Parliament or member of the Quebec National Assembly or of the Governor General until my process is complete (it could take years). Plus, I cannot write, call or email them.
While these conditions will be challenged in the legal system, I have thought long and hard for the past ten days about how to respond. The best I can come up with is this:
Mr. Prime Minister, I am honoured to live in a country where the legal system frees me after spending four days behind bars for embarrassing an important person. The real outrage is the fact that Canada has not demanded the release of 70-year-old folksinger/activist, S� Anne, whom I met in a Port au Prince jail a year ago and who still has not been charged.
Or Catholic Priest Gerard Jean-Juste, who Amnesty international has called a �prisoner of conscience.� Or the constitutional Prime Minister and Interior Minister as well as hundreds of lesser known Haitians detained for their political convictions.

WINNIPEG — Canada’s elections watchdog is reviewing Human Resources Minister Belinda Stronach’s 2004 campaign expenses, the Winnipeg Free Press reports today.
Elections Canada is looking for possible overspending that appeared on the books as part of the cost of her lavish $100,000 victory party, the newspaper reported.
In a report out of Ottawa, the Free Press said the examination by the Commissioner of Canada Elections involves questions surrounding a $75,378 expenditure that could mean Stronach spent much more than the allowable limit for candidates in the Ontario riding of Newmarket-Aurora.
Stronach, the former president of autoparts giant Magna International, was elected as a Tory in 2004 after losing the Conservative leadership race to Stephen Harper. She crossed the floor to the governing Liberals last spring.
A spokesman for Stronach confirmed the investigation and said her people are working with Elections Canada to sort out the situation. >>>>

The CP article was both obnoxiously partisan and purposely deceitful.
First they slag Harper by tagging him with a tactic Dithers and his predicessors routinely engaged in (convenient, oily flag waving) and secondly they deceive the readers by purposely ignoring the fact that the CPC had a strong arctic sovereignty policy since it’s policy convention last winter…..long before the liberal neglect of northern security became a craven electioneering gig from the Dithers campaign.
CP has just lost all credibility in reporting this election accurately in a requisite non partisan manner. They are NOT a news service they are a disinformation service.

Didn’t strike me that way. It’s an outdoor night shot (read: dark) with oblique overhead lighting. The light passes through Harper’s (translucent) pupils – just like anyone else’s – and makes them appear lighter; the effect is probably pronounced due to the high contrast and his light eye colour.

Reminds me of when USA Today doctored Dr. Rice’s eyes a few months ago.

The devil it was. The angle of lighting, its strength, and its colour temperature can vividly alter the appearance of a subject’s eyes. Stick to commenting on topics you know about as you’re obviously not much of a photographer.

Sean of the Dead is missing the point. It doesn’t matter whether the photo is photoshopped or not — CP release an avalanche of photos for the choosing and posting. That someone picked *this* one is the issue.
During Chretien’s reign of error, the press would routinely ignore photos that made him look like a buffoon, just as they ignored photos of Robert Stansfield that showed him to be the athlete that he was.
All it took was one dropped football photo to forever tarnish Stansfield as a bumbling Gerald Ford.
Don’t think that lesson has been lost on the legions of CP Drones and Flacks.

As far as the Haitian situation goes, just exactly how do you think Harper would change things there? You might remember that it was Bush and his sponsored thugs who overthrew the democratically elected Aristide – and who continue to apply the boot to the throat of Haitian democracy. History will review our Canadian contribution to this illegal coup with revulsion. I can’t see Stephen Harper doing anything to correct the situation either, considering how much he loves to champion the brilliant policies emanating from the White House. (Just not right now with an election going on when he has to lie to get elected.)
