Toronto Star- Inside the 905 — the ridings that helped deny Mark Carney a majority

Canada’s political polarization is acutely visible in the Greater Toronto Area’s suburban and rural ring — a diverse and fast-growing area of roughly 4 million people that spans Durham to Halton and has long been seen as a crucial, vote-rich battleground and bellwether for which way the country is politically moving.

  1. Not going to click on the Star. I do know that my city of Cambridge had 2 incumbent liberals, both flipped to conservative. Our region also flipped a green to conservative, and would have flipped another from the liberals if not for the PPC split

  2. It’s a rather good article. It’s quite right that the story of the last election was the complete disintegration of the NDP vote. Jughead lost most of the NDP voters however, not just in 905 but across Canada. Much the same thing happened in Quebec with large portions of BQ support going Liberal, particularly around Montreal.

  3. Caption under the first picture of houses:

“Interviews with voters and political observers suggest the Conservatives had success by working hard over the years to convince people that their lifestyle is deteriorating thanks to factors including rampant crime, housing unaffordability and rising immigration, and that the only solution was a hard reset from the Liberal past.”

You see, conservatives had to convince people that there is rampant crime, housing unaffordability, and rising immigration. It’s not like they could see these things with their own lying eyes…

    1. Demographics are responsible for the Liberal win. The correlation is almost perfect, the older the population the more Liberal they voted. This is the boomers voting to fully empty the larder for generations, all for them. The greatest generation bequeathed a wealthy, prosperous and free country to their kids (boomers) and they spent it all, then consumed everything they produced, and everything their progeny will produce. Mom and dad went through the hell of World wars, they determined to make it better for their kids and in so doing produced a generation of selfish, pampered, unserious and self indulgent permanent adolescents. the great justice coming is that their progeny, condemned to spend their lives as wage salves enduring crushing taxation to support a debt ridden, crumbling country are voting with their feet. The new folks brought in to replace them will be the care workers as the boomers arrive at care homes for their dotage, these folks come from cultures not noted for compassion or caring, I pray for mass amounts of elder abuse in their futures. Justice comes in the end.
Happily me and mine will be out of this shithole as it collapses.

    2. You mean Toronto?
Newsflash: Ontario is not just Toronto, no matter what Liberals think, nor is it Canada’s western border.
Having said that, Go Leafs Go!!!!

  4. AllanS, look at a map of the results. Other than urban areas southern Ontario is solid blue and has been since the first Harper minority, except for 2015.

  5. I’m sorry, but there’s nothing Conservative about giving head on a public beach. Harrumph.
