  1. Apparently it is very easy to make an actual sten gun. All you need is a an appropriately equipped shopped. One guy can make several in a day just as a hobby.
Most farmers have all the tooling they need just laying around.

  2. I hear that a Mac-11 is the preferred weapon of moose Hunters. You just can’t put enough randomly-fired bullets into a charging moose … during your drive-by hunt.

  3. Who knew you could make machine guns? I thought they just appeared somewhere. We better make them illegal.

  4. Staff Sgt. Pierre Blais says they can shoot 1,200 rounds per minute. That is impressive considering the magazine clip only holds 32 rounds…

  5. 32 rounds in two seconds equals 1200 rounds a minute. It’s the new math. Try to keep up, okay?

  6. I took a look at the new Firearms Classification Board the other day, six anti-gun activists chompin’ at the bit to take ’em away.
Guns are easy to make, for anyone with a little machine shop type skills. There was an industry in India over 100 years ago in remote villages that could make a Webley revolver just like a real one.
There was a utube video a few years back where a guy showed how to make an AK-47 receiver out of a flat shovel.
It isn’t rocket science,as they say, but I cringe whenever I read something like this as it gives the CFGC and Wendy Cukier another platform in her agenda to confiscate all firearms.
I wonder which high ranking cop gets to put those guns in his private collection.

  7. 1200 rounds/min, that is as good as the MG-42.
Facing the German MG-42 Machine Gun!

    Caliber 7.920 mm
    Capacity 50 rounds
    Length 1,220.000 mm
    Weight 11.570 kg
    Rate of Fire 1200 rounds/min
    Range 1,000 m
    Muzzle Velocity 755 m/s
    @ don:
We made 45 calibre muzzle loaders in high school shop class, with only a parent’s note, as 17 year olds. We could hit golf balls at a 100 yds on range day.
How hard would a machine gun be with a little math skill and a computerized CNC machine?
Now with the advent of 3d printing and access to Solidworks 3D any kid with skills can ‘roll your own’ automatic weapon with little more than motivation.

  8. 1200 rounds/minute may technically be the cyclic rate of fire, but it’s a physical impossibility. Not only would you have to switch magazines occasionally, but if you were to somehow rig a belt feed to the SMG, it would jam long before 1200 rounds due to barrel deformation from overheating.
“Especially when they can shoot 1,200 rounds per minute” is just transparent scaremongering with large numbers.

  9. The MG 42 required a barrel change every 150 rounds during firing.
Typically an MG squad would carry 3-5 barrels as spares.
The proposition that this ‘roll yer own’ would put 1200 rounds downrange in a minute is typical over the top spin doctoring.
With a 32 round magazine, you would need to swap out 5 times before your barrel is toast; thus limiting the shooter to ~150 rounds (on the assumption that they weren’t ‘taken out’ on magazine swaps).
But then math is hard for the CEEB…!

  10. Good grief, would you all stop picking flys**t out of pepper with the rounds per minute stat?
If you’re going 80km/h, do you HAVE to drive for exactly one hour to properly validate that rate of speed?!? Didn’t think so!

  11. Given the MAC-11 is only accurate up to 50m:
Noting the weapon’s poor accuracy, in the 1970s International Association of Police Chiefs weapons researcher David Steele described the MAC series as “fit only for combat in a phone booth.”[8]
While illegal the ‘manufacturers’ are hardly going to start a war with this lead sprayer @ 298 m/s.

  12. I don’t care if my neighbor has unregistered guns in his house, under the bed, or behind the drywall.
    I don’t care.

  13. “There was an industry in India over 100 years ago in remote villages that could make a Webley revolver just like a real one.”
It’s still there, in what is now Pakistan. They crank out AKs by, as it were, the shovel full.

  14. Of course the CBC article has comments disabled.
I would like to see the CBC’s actual written policy on when comments are to be disabled. I had the temerity to ask once, but was ignored.

  15. My Dad told me that Sten guns used by the CDN forces during WW11 utilized springs that were manufactured in England. The springs were made in a bed factory, and not of a very high quality. The Sten was an open breech design where the force of the blowback left the breech open when firing ceased.

  16. It is kind of stupid to quote a “rounds per minute” rate of fire, when the only available magazine holds only a second or two’s worth of ammo. Sort of like posting speed limits in furlongs per fortnight.
1200 rounds per minute is 20 rounds per second, which is a much more sensible way to describe the rate of fire. So a 32-round mag is consumed in less than 2 seconds, at which point that gun becomes a five thousand dollar club.

  17. We were warned not to drop the damn things as they might go off on their own. A dollars worth of cheap tin and steel, but could destroy a piece of plywood at thirty feet. The Stirlings were apparently more reliable, but I never used one.

  18. 32 poopy little .380 rounds in a 2 second burst and she’s empty.
A scatter gun with the plug out of the mag and 6 SSG rounds has more fire power than a MAC 11 and they’re everywhere. SHhhhh don’t tell Sgt. Dudley, he may lose bowel control and slide off his horse.

  19. Re:rounds per minute
My single shot 22 can fire a shot in under 50 milliseconds. That’s over 1200 rounds per minute.

  20. Bill Elder said: “32 poopy little .380 rounds in a 2 second burst and she’s empty.”
So practical, right? Imagine trying to hold onto that thing as it emptied the magazine.
Now imagine how much use that silencer is going to be after 30 rounds of .380 in two seconds. It would be glowing red. That would be an ouchie if it contacted skin.
It never fails to amuse, the blustering outrage these cops and Justice types summon over a toy some guy screwed together in the back of the shop, just to see if he could. A “silencer” doesn’t make a gun silent, and a 1200 round-per-minute pistol isn’t a f-ing crime spree. At best its a fun afternoon in the woods, burning expensive ammunition and giggling because your target looks like swiss cheese.
You fake-faced cops want to see something scary, shoot a plain-Jane .3006 hunting rifle at a brick wall some time. Fist sized holes. Police issue 9mm pistol rounds will go all the way through a modern frame house. Police issue .308 rifle rounds will go all the way through a brick house. That’s scary.
What’s scary about it is how little range time cops get. Most of them can’t hit a barn from the inside.

  21. “Imagine trying to hold onto that thing as it emptied the magazine.”
Pretty light – hard to hit anything. Back in my army days, we had Sterling SMGs but they weighed almost as much as an AR 15. They were controllable under automatic fire. The 7.62 NATO C-2 (FN-FAL) wasn’t.
