“If every storm or cloud is the storm of the century, none are.”

About the Texas floods.

One of the many lies promoted (suspect the social media version of JournOlist was running hot and heavy) was that no warnings were given because of DOGE cuts, short staffing, etc. All were lies as any cuts don’t take place until the FY, the NWS had extra staff on hand per SOP, and warnings were given in a timely manner. Not once, but no less than three times.

But, there does lie part of the rub. Texas was indeed right to criticize the NWS, as Todd Starnes pointed out on X. Back after Katrina, the NWS was (rightfully) criticized for not updating warnings and giving accurate warnings. The bureaucratic mind being what it is, the decision was made to treat every storm as the storm of the century and warn accordingly such that they could never be criticized again for not issuing strong enough warnings. Besides, that is easier, and easier to justify, that in having people show mature judgment and professionalism and update warnings if and as warranted. No thought, no muss, and it totally screws disaster preparedness planning and actions right in the keester.

  1. Back when gainfully employed at a radio station in SW Ontario I don’t recall any warnings leading up to the January 1998 ice storm. There very well may have been in the seriously affected regions of Eastern Ontario and large portions of Quebec. Ever since then the Weather Office sends out the-sky-is-falling jeremiads at the drop of a hat regardless of the potential severity. I’m sure the insurance folks might have had a say in this.

      1. All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten. When we were still taught tales of morality as penned by Aesop.

But our government agencies are too wise for such romanticized morality. Because now we use SCIENCE! It was SCIENCE! That certified we were ALL gonna dieeeeeeeee!!! Aiiiieeeeee!!! from COVID … if you didn’t OBEY.

As to the flash flood? Teletyped WARNINGS from the NWS were of NO USE to sleeping 8yo girls. Blaring sirens in the flood zone might be more useful. Just … don’t push the button unless absolutely certain of the need.

        1. I read yesterday that one area without cell service had earlier considered SIRENS but that the idea was rejected due to the high cost. Interestingly, the spin (?) in the story was that the public had been shocked by the cost, from which, I presume, we are to infer that the public had nixed the idea.

Maybe but maybe some official butt-covering.

          1. I read the same thing. But here’s my problem with subjecting something like Public Safety to a “vote”. The International Building Code upon which US Building Codes are based … assign what’s called an “Importance Factor” to every building type. The higher the “I” rating … the more restrictive the fire rated construction, structural standards, exiting, etc.

The Christian camp is essentially a collection of “Dormitories” … i.e. high density, “Assembly Occupancy” SLEEPING quarters … where occupants are THE MOST VULNERABLE. Smoke detectors, Co detectors, Fire Alarms, and Fire Sprinklers are mandatory. Dormitories carry an extremely HIGH Importance factor.

These DORMITORIES should NOT be located in a Flash Flood plain … or at least be built above the FEMA ‘BFE’ Base Flood Elevation … which is essentially the 100 year flood plain. And their foundations should be hardened against flood waters.

But at a MINIMUM there should be sirens. You know … just like they have in Tornado “Alleys”.

  2. New Mexico flash flood yesterday

This flooding occurred in an area recently ravaged by wildfires (the Salt and South Fork fires) determined to be “human caused”, i.e., arson. Is cloud seeding suspected here just like Texas? AI assures me that the flash floods caused by 10 inches of rain in Dubai April 2024 were not from cloud seeding though Dubai’s govt does support a cloud seeding program. Blaming cloud seeding programs does not fit the climate change narrative same as arson caused wildfires do not fit the narrative.

  3. If there is blame to be handed out in Texas, it is not with the weather service, per se. It is with those along the river in what has been described as the “most dangerous valley in the U.S.” They should be monitoring the weather service as the area floods hard and often given the geography and geology. But in my mind, the biggest issue is how people have over the last couple of decades become so horribly dependent on government to “keep them safe”, they have lost the ability to determine risk for themselves. It’s much like “smart phones”….where people carry their brains in their pockets rather than their heads.

  4. Just would like to point out that the nature has nor rules.
It does not matter none what kind of rules they, the government paper pushers set up, the nature don’t care.

The nature will do what it will and those that think they have it cornered can go and suck a lemon.
Nature don’t care about you. It has its own ways and sapiens have no say in it.

Nature will kill without mercy, though in general, as luck would have it, 97.8 percent of the time it is very supportive.

  5. What exacerbated the situation this time was the time of day. The flood started before dawn while everyone was asleep and would be extremely groggy. In 1987 it was during the day. The few casualties then were on a bus that was caught in overflowing water.

Among the comments are questions about the Clinton grifters and the $6 billion in aid to Haiti that somehow didn’t rebuild the island but note that Chelsea had a real fancy wedding and bought a $$$$ penthouse in Manhattan. $6 billion doesn’t go as far as it used to it appears.

  7. Here in Southern Ontario we’ve had weather warnings last week as temperatures climbed above 22 deg C with some humidity. We used to call that the start of summer. Net result for me is I tend not to pay attention to weather advisories. The other false flag is tornado warnings. They are important but the area of concern is so large it makes the warning irrelevant. And how about those child abduction emergency broadcasts that everyone ignores because Dad took the kids without Mama’s permission? Do these warnings work or do they make you insensitive to warnings – the old crying wolf too often problem?
