  1. Thanks for posting these Frank Zappa tunes Franciso. I’ve never done a dive into Zappa because I always considered he just did “novelty music” … yet I do appreciate what a great guitarist and musician he was. The other reason is that I’m attracted to rhythm and melody … no matter what the genre of music. This tune has a bit of that going for it … and I love the tone of xylophone and vibes.

Zappa’s music reminds me of LCD Soundsystem … of whom I’m a great fan. Imagine that? Kenji likes more than just Boomer music!? But I do. Just give me rhythm, melody … and surprise. Make me EXPERIENCE your music as a “new thing” take it in multiple directions and tempos. Don’t bore me with repetition.

    One of my favorites.

  2. That was my favourite Zappa ensemble, with Ruth Underwood on vibes and George Duke on keys. And the sax player, Napoleon Brock Murphy, was a great singer despite this song where he was having some fun.

    1. Oh, Kenji…puleeze! I guess we differ, as all music lovers do. Oh, did you really mean “genre” bending, or is that “gender” bending? To my mind, that was not “musical genius” but rather a guy who was trying to be Dylan and Bowie and failing, Beck’s guitar ability is mediocre, like his voice. His guitar guy was also failing to channel Townsend, and the full band was weirdly gay in suits. That is hardly new and unique, as Bolin from T Rex and many others could attest.
By contrast, here is the great John Hammond also playing a guitar and harp on a rack. Note the difference?

  3. Zappa…
…fabulous skill, probable genius, utterly tiresome.
    It’s a shame, really.
