   I note that Alexander the Great didn’t conquer anything too far North and stopped when he hit the mountains. . It was just too breezy under those skirts.

   2. Could be there was nothing interesting to conquer up North. If you can produce composite armor, knitting together a set of whollies is easy.

3. Linothorax has been well-replicated and studied through the ages. Light, breathable, cheap, easy to fix. Even resists some small calibre bullets, though with repeated hits it will fail. Against Persians dressed in silk pyjamas, you got quite the edge. Against Persians equipped with scale or linothorax of their own, the edge was less, and it came down to the superior training and drill of the hoplite phalanx.

   But the phalanx ultimately failed against the legion – mostly due to command and control and the flexibility of legionary formations over broken ground.
