DEI The Friendly Skies (Bumped)

Update: Word on the web is that the Delta/Endeavor Air pilot was a woman, who was only recently licensed to fly this type of aircraft. A name is out there and its easy to find, but I won’t use it as there have been too many cases of mistaken identity in these types of cases. But the University of North Dakota has deleted their social media mentions of her, so there’s that.

This confirms the information I saw earlier.

  1. As I posted about the really awful female airline recruiting video … page below …

What!? Hiring via an Elvis soundtrack of “Burning Love” doesn’t inspire you?
Those girls have a Burning Love for each other … and for flying. Competency? Intelligence? Scholarship? Puhleeze!? That’s so 1980’s … get with the BURNING LOVE!

Girl, girl, girl you’re gonna set me on fire … yikes!! Did nobody check the lyrics of their bouncy tune!?

  2. You’re screwed no matter what. Anyone old enough to be competent, male or female, retired years ago. If they’re somehow still flying, they are ripe for a heart attack or stroke.

  3. Martha Lunken, 78, has flown since she was young and in this podcast says something to the effect that she’s not into pushing girls into aviation, if they love it then they love it, but don’t encourage the wrong people, flying is not for everyone. And it’s a good pilot interview besides:

    https://www.sportys.com/blog/dc3s-warbird-pilots-and-the-art-of-flying-martha-lunken/

Sidenote: she flew under a bridge a couple years ago and the FAA got their panties in a twist.

  4. Feminists all over the world claim to want women to be the equals of men.

In the civilized world, only Israel calls the feminists’ bluff, sending women as well as men to fight for Israel, and expecting them to win or die trying, just like the men are expected to do. In the Gentile world, feminists routinely assume implicitly that serving as cannon fodder should remain an exclusively male occupation.

Feminists do not like Israel, not least because her daughters expose their hypocrisy daily.

    1. And because the photos which I have seen of IDF females (admittedly a small sample – but Gal Gadot comes to mind) are smoking hot and I am a woman of 73 and heterosexual.

  5. Okay, this flight had a female crew. How many flights involved in crashes or near-misses in the US over the past few months have had male crews? We’ve heard that the pilot was recently qualified; would a male pilot with the same experience have done any better?

    1. Um, Frances, you’re employing some “girl math” here.

The question shouldn’t be “how many crashes or near misses involved male crews?” as if the MERE EXISTENCE of crashes or near misses involving male crews obviated the larger point.

The question should be “what is frequency of crashes or near misses involving male crews in proportion to the number of male-crew flights COMPARED TO the frequency of crashes or near misses involving female crews in proportion to the number of female-crew flights?”

I’m not sure of the answer but I am happy to go where the facts take us.

Also the mere existence of a (entirely theoretical and perhaps idiosyncratic) counter-example – i.e., “would a male pilot with the same experience have done any better?” does not invalidate the general example. I wish people would stop arguing that.

      1. Related: aren’t there more male crew members that are DEI hires as well these days, perhaps a factor in some of those male-crew crashes and near misses.

    2. DCA midair was caused by low experienced Female helicopter pilot. The Atlas Air crash was caused by a DEI hired male that was fired at 5 previous airlines. Colgan crash had a female first officer that panicked and raised the flaps during a stall. DEI is unsafe for airlines and aviation.

    3. What’s with the white-knighting?
A DEI hire is a DEI hire. Period.
Whether it be sex-based or race-based, it sure ain’t merit-based.

    4. Context is everything. How many male crews have flown their aircraft into the ground at a high descent rate with no apparent flare during a standard approved approach in daylight?

    5. “…Would a male pilot with the same experience have done any better?…”

Depends on which male pilot. They are all individuals, and as soon as irrelevant factors such as race, sex, political affiliation, who’s your uncle, etc. start determing who gets the job, you don’t know if you have the best person for the job.

Most crashes involve male pilots because there aren’t enough female pilots. Get up there and do your share, Ladies.

Spike says… “I could not see flaps down on the wing that is visible. If not, that tells why it did not flair.”

If she recently switched to the 900 from the 200 that could be a factor. They land very differently because the 200 doesn’t have slats. The approach pitch attitude on the 200 is nose down because of the lack of slats and therefore the site picture is different in the round out and flare. I want to know why the captain didn’t intervene. She will likely be retrained and captain downgraded.

The explanation is from a discussion about this woman’s relative lack of experience. No link because I got myself in trouble here linking previously.

    2. The flaps don’t flare the airplane. The elevator does that. Flaps are used to increase lift at lower speeds such as at takeoff and landing. If the flaps were not used in this approach, the airspeed would have to be considerably higher or the descent rate would be higher.

  6. Women are generally considered better pilots than men because they take less risks. All the most infamous crashes…men…the Concord comes to mind, Endeavor space shuttle, (men pushed the unsafe launch), the recent Honda Jet.

      1. There’s a fair bit of evidence that the navigator was a chronic alcoholic. Earhart was a competent pilot, but she was largely a manufactured novelty. She had no business attempting that flight.

    1. How on earth does the Concord crash get a mention in this context? They picked runway debris, it was pretty much over after that.

    1. This is quite normal, pilot flying is not necessarily the pilot in command. How else does a junior FO get the experience to move up to captain?
I remember when my son started, he had less than 300 hours total time. On his first assignment the captain flew the first leg of the flight, the second leg my son was the pilot flying. He made captain on the CRJ.
The limitation for the FO, in his case, was a restricted set of conditions. Basically the weather had to be less severe for him to be pilot flying, for really bad conditions the captain was required to be flying. Those limits are determined by the airline.
I have trained some really good female pilots, and some poor male ones. There are many more male pilots. On one of these links I read the comment that nobody should be pushed towards a flying career. I agree, flying has to be a total commitment, it goes deep into your soul. If a woman has that feel, she is likely to become a very competent pilot, if however she is attracted just by the silly commercials we see, then fasten your seat belts TIGHT.

  7. The funny thing about women in aviation: They celebrate it every year in Canada (at least) and have shingdings with conga lines where they pat each other in the back for being women in aviation. Even though women have been at it since the 1920s. (Some women do shun this even, has to be said. Some have the good sense not to be photographed in conga lines, especially if the CF paid their way to attend). You would all recognize the names of the women they hail as the best pioneers. The funny thing is that the best of them all, can’t be named. Iz Verboten. First woman to fly a helicopter, first woman to fly a jet, only woman to fly a rocket plane, holder of several gliding records. Also an unrepentant Nazi personally decorated by Hitler with the Iron Cross – with diamonds. Test pilot for the Stuka, etc etc: Hanna Reitsch.

“And what have we now in Germany? A country of bankers and car-makers. Even our great army has gone soft. Soldiers wear beards and question orders. I am not ashamed to say I believed in National Socialism. I still wear the Iron Cross with diamonds Hitler gave me.”

  8. There are plenty of qualified and highly capable female pilots, Delta seem to be ignoring this and crewing aircraft based on DEI factors.
Go to your X account search Delta pilot toronto and review the information there to come to your own conclusions.

  9. We had an ALL female crew at the small airline I used to work for, on the younger side, very capable and very professional, never any incidents. These ladies EARNED their wings, no DEI involved!
Some of the male crew, including the chief pilot, were a bit lackluster, would not respond as well in an emergency..
You want someone with experience up front, like someone who’s had engine failures and such, rather than someone who’s never had an in flight incident. Sure the young ones can fly the automation, but can they fly the aircraft if the automation quits?!
The old joke about the best crew being a pilot and a dog, the pilot is there to feed the dog and the dog is there to bite the pilot, if he touches anything!

  10. The video that Francisco posted earlier by Captain Steeeve was removed by Captain Steeeve himself because someone asked him. We are at the point now that news will not report the race of a criminal because ‘feelings’ or something.

  11. Regardless of the weather it was obvious that this was co-pilot error. Controlled flight into cumulogranite.

  12. On the plus side, it advertizes the rugedness of Canadian aircraft, just like the CL 416. Built for a man, but tough enough for a woman.

  13. Not only will I check the cockpit for females every time I board a plane … but I will be asking for birthdates too. Sorry … but 23yo is too damn young to be piloting or copiloting a passenger jet. Period. I happily reverse my walk down the gangway if I find women or youtts in the cockpit
