Toronto Star- Man at centre of biggest Shoppers Drug Mart takedown ever handed conditional sentence — and likely won’t serve jail time

Satnampal Chawla pleaded guilty to trafficking stolen property, after Halton Police orchestrated the biggest police takedown ever at Shoppers Drug Mart, dismantling an organization that had been stealing from 148 locations across Ontario in 2022.

On Wednesday, an Ontario Court judge handed him an 18-month conditional sentence, which includes house arrest for the first six months and a curfew for the following six months.

  1. “I assure you, it could have been much worse,” Justice Brian Puddington told Chawla on Wednesday.”

    Understatement of the year. Only in Canada. Isn’t multiculturalism a wonderful thing.

          Just finished watching “American Manhunt: OJ Simpson”… which emphasizes everything that is wrong with race relations in North America. Not recommended for anyone with high blood pressure.

          I’m with Trump… “colour-blind and merit-based” is the only fair solution for reasonable human beings.

    2. What was his defence? “I didn’t know it was illegal” or “The police here don’t take bribes”. Was he told not to do it again, naughty boy?

    3. “I assure you, it could have been much worse, but as you are brown, run along there and don’t do it again.”

    1. Or occupation Truck driver.

      Did he beg the judge not to charge him with mischief?

  2. But both the Crown and defence recommended a conditional sentence instead, and the judge agreed, in part because Chawla’s guilty plea spared the justice system from a complicated trial.

    Wow. Doing your job is, apparently, “complicated.” Here’s a question for the Crown, the Judge, and the defense…How exactly did the defendant have $2 Million to turn over as a condition of the sentencing? Shouldn’t the CRA be looking rather closely at that? Or, is that too “complicated”?

    1. That’s the contents of the warehouse, which contained a ton of legally purchased goods as well. It’s common practice for cops to seize anything not nailed down in a raid, and a guilty plea means you agree to surrender it all. The US has nothing on Canada for police asset seizure of legal assets.

      1. Once again, you’re full of it.
        In many states, the cops can say your assets come from drugs, not arrest you and take your stuff. If you want it back, you have to sue.

  3. There is no saving this country.
    We’re too far gone and the rot is all the way to the top.

    1. I seem to remember some fictional story about a farm that had the line, “all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”…

  4. Why are we wasting money on police?

    Cut the force in half, we don’t need that many to beat people for disagreeing with the Liberal racist Party.

    1. In Toronto, Chief of Police Myron Demkiw publicly stated that all illicit drugs should be made legal.

      I guess Toronto Mayor Chairman Olivia wants a lot more overdoses to solve her city’s overpopulation problem to make room for all the asylum seekers while also proving new job opportunities for the “newcomers”.

  6. “Satnampal Chawla (34) of Brampton and Shabani Luthrta (32) of Toronto have both been charged with:
    • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Exceeding $5000;
    • Trafficking of Property Obtained by Crime Exceeding $5000;
    • Participate in a Criminal Organization.

    Renata Szarkeziova (36) of Brampton, Jesika Abkarovicova (24) of Brampton, Zakelina Balazova (30) of Brampton, Sandra Balazova (26) of Brampton, Leonardo Rafael (24) of Brampton, Martin Fatak (44) of Brampton, Roman Stojka (46) of Brampton, Rene Stojka (32) of Brampton, and Sabel Lakatasova (23) of Brampton have each been charged with the following:
    • Theft Exceeding $5000;
    • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Exceeding $5000;
    • Trafficking of Property Obtained by Crime Exceeding $5000;
    • Participate in a Criminal Organization.”

    So basically, the crown gave them all handies and let them go? or did some of the others involved get jail time?

    1. This list of people that you provided is the finest example of the liberal government of Canada bringing to Canada immigrant criminals and they’ve been doing it for decades. The liberal government of Canada importing crime.

  7. Judges should be elected and some should be publicly pilloried and bombarded with eggs and rotten fruit. More liberal garbage who have no use for hardworking Canadians. Be a shame if these soft-on-crime robed d-bags had their home addresses doxed.
