  2. Sophie is writing not one but two books. Must have a lot of money that needs laundering.

    1. Exactly. Largs. The publishers advance a few $million to the *ahem* ‘author’ for ghost-written books that will sell at retail in the tens or maybe even hundreds of copies, if that. Then it’s straight to the $1 bin where maybe, just maybe, a couple of thousand more will sell. The rest, if the publisher even bothers to have them printed go straight to the recycler.

      Does the publisher ever ask for the advance to be paid back? Hell no!

      What I’ve never run across is how the the payola gets to the publisher. The publishers would have long ago been bankrupt if they had to eat those advances, but they don’t. It’s OPM (other people’s money) that they are advancing. How does that work? I dunno. I don’t think anyone is inclined to look at how that works.

I would also think that Penguin Random House and Tundra Books, a children’s book subsidiary, gets federal government money for promoting “Canadian” content and other useless crap.

  12. The communist coffee tale is an interesting study in how to fail miserably. This guy was rather old getting started in life. Then he named his cafe “Anarchist”.

    Some relative gave him seed $, but it was not enough. Free coffee – great idea, if you want go broke. Uncomfortable-looking pink folding chairs. No wonder that “he could not make it through a Toronto winter”, even with low rent from symbiotic friends (landlord, coffee provider), who believed in the “cause”.

    Oh, now the seed $ dries up and he hates the people he asked and they are “unethical capitalists”. Could not tap anyone for more dough for a loser business plan. So, then, he lets go the f-bomb and blames everyone else on the planet.
