More Pavilions At Folkfest

Ilana Mercer;

Whereas American media have shed mostly darkness on the “apparently” mysterious motivation behind the ruthless, savage, April 15 attack on the Boston Marathon – a Chechen leader offered some valuable insights about these homegrown terrorists:
“[The] Tsarnaevs … were raised in the United States, and their attitudes and beliefs were formed there. It is necessary to seek the roots of this evil in America.”
The man makes a profound point.

If Women Ran The World

Smitten;

More than a dozen Maryland state prison guards helped a dangerous national gang operate a drug-trafficking and money-laundering scheme from behind bars that involved cash payments, sex and access to fancy cars, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.
Thirteen female corrections officers essentially handed over control of a Baltimore jail to gang leaders, prosecutors said. The officers were charged Tuesday in a federal racketeering indictment.
The indictment described a jailhouse seemingly out of control. Four corrections officers became pregnant by one inmate. Two of them got tattoos of the inmate’s first name, Tavon — one on her neck, the other on a wrist.

Is That A Monument In Your Pocket?

Another good reason for women to arm themselves;

A tiny Vancouver park is at the centre of a monument war, pitting backers of a proposed monument to Irish Canadians against activists who feel its dominant “phallic” nature would violate the integrity of an existing Montreal Massacre memorial. […]
“Placing the [Ireland Canada Monument] design 80 feet from the women’s monument, which has vulva shapes engraved in the top of each of the 14 sarcophagi forms, is inappropriate and will be seen to be a violation by supporters,” wrote Chris McDowell, an activist and second-generation Irish Canadian who led a seven-year campaign to build the Marker of Change.

So you don’t end up as a “vulva shape” in a Vancouver park.

The Girlfriend Trainer

EBD;

Girlfriend Trainer, which is available in both the App Store and the Android market, lets players slap, electrocute, or mace a virtual girlfriend for what most people would call minor transgressions, including drinking their boyfriend’s drink or leaving her blouse on the floor. “Crack that whip and teach your gal a thing or two about being the Perfect Girlfriend!” reads the game’s description. “When scolding doesn’t work, just zap her, whack her, and train her to be your ideal girlfriend….
“About time she got the message. Slap her silly!

Great Moments In Journalism

A quote attributed to Don Cherry that The Canadian Press included in a list of some of the year’s most memorable quotes was in fact “made up” by a Toronto-based blogger, the news agency acknowledged Friday.
The quote — “This just proves what a nation of pussies we are” — was said to be Cherry reacting to news of Canada’s declining crime rate.
In fact, Cherry never uttered the words.
[…]
The fact the quote was itself being quoted was brought to the attention of the news agency, and to Bradley himself, by blogger Kate McMillan, who had been alerted to it by a reader on her “Small Dead Animals” blog.
“I called him and asked him and he said, ‘Yeah, I just made it up,'” said McMillan, from Delisle, Sask.
“It’s something that we have to watch for as bloggers all the time, especially those of us that are high traffic and have a point of view.”
McMillan said she appreciated the fact that The Canadian Press responded to her call by immediately taking steps to report its error.
“Sometimes we do this and we get nothing but silence or resistance,” she said.

SDA reader Chris, in the comments;

Canadian Press “reporter” Linda Shearman has filed a story on the most “infamous” Canadian quotes in 2011. #1 on the list is this:
“This just proves what a nation of p*ssies we are.” — Don Cherry on news that Canada’s murder rate is at its lowest since the 1960s.
PROBLEM: Cherry never said this.
It appears on a blog post at http://www.andrewbradley.ca/?p=1819 and from the context, it is clear that it’s satire, i.e., a fictional, made-up quote, not something that Don Cherry ever said.
This story has been picked up by Global and the Globe and Mail, among other sites online. But as yet, no one seems to have picked up on the fact their supposedly most infamous quote of 2011 is not something Don Cherry ever said.

I called the Canadian Press about this, and talked to Linda Shearman, who wrote the story. She’s promised to check that the quote is legitimate and get back to me. But I did ask her if it made any sense that Don Cherry would make such a statement in response to a falling murder rate? I read her the entire passage, including the passage about bayonets.
“Do you ever listen to him?” She asked.
“Yes?”
“He says some pretty outrageous things.” she replied.
“Sure, he has his views about hockey, but do you really think Don Cherry would be in favour of a higher murder rate? Does that even make sense?”
She stated was sure she picked it up from other news stories. I pointed out that, given the practice of reporters eating each other’s turds, wasn’t it possible that someone else had picked it up from a satire site before she recycled it as fact?
Because I couldn’t find a source on Google that predates the satire.
She said she’d check it out. I suggested she contact Don Cherry.
Because I called Andrew Bradley. He says he just made it up.

UPDATE: Linda Shearman just called – SDA gets results. Canadian Press will be issuing a correction.
UPDATE 2: Don Cherry is not amused.
For today’s top nominee in journalistic cowardice, the fake quote captured above has been quietly removed in the Globe and Mail version, without so much as noting the page has been updated. However, they forgot to fix their rankings – now their “top ten” infamous quotes begin with #2.

Killing Her Softly

Mark Steyn;

Sex-selective abortion is a fact of life in India, where the gender ratio has declined to 1,000 boys to 900 girls nationally, and as low as 1,000 boys to 300 girls in some Punjabi cities. In China, the state-enforced “one child” policy has brought about the most gender-distorted demographic cohort in global history, the so-called guang gun — “bare branches.” If you can only have one kid, parents choose to abort girls and wait for a boy, to the point where in the first generation to grow to adulthood under this policy there are 119 boys for every 100 girls. In practice, a “woman’s right to choose” turns out to mean the right to choose not to have any women.

Danielle Smith’s Speech to Quebec Conservatives

I received the following e-mail from an uncle of mine well connected in the Conservative Party of Canada. The linked speech is well worth a read:
Ms. Danielle Smith’s address about the Alberta story to Quebec conservatives should be necessary reading for all members of the Canadian Parliament and the U.S. Congress; especially those who fail to understand the importance of the Oil Sands.
An important note: After the oil and gas stocks are depleted, Alberta. BC and Saskatchewan are sitting on top of a 1000 year supply of coal.
Danielle Smith may very well be Alberta’s premier after the next general election. Her speech to the Quebec conservatives is one of the best written, representing the positive history about the Alberta story; not the “misinformation and smear” the Liberals have used over the years. Alberta is fortunate to have a person like Danielle as Leader for the Wild Rose Party.
Premier Ralph Klein would often remark — “the only thing I fear is a Conservative party passing me on the RIGHT ! !”. Danielle Smith and her Wild Rose Alliance is that party. Ralph was a bleeding heart Liberal before he joined the Alberta PC party.
Here’s the speech!
