The Sound Of Settled Science

WUWT;

Mike Wallace is a hydrologist with nearly 30 years’ experience, who is now working on his Ph.D. in nanogeosciences at the University of New Mexico. In the course of his studies, he uncovered a startling data omission that he told me: “eclipses even the so-called climategate event.” Feely’s work is based on computer models that don’t line up with real-world data — which Feely acknowledged in email communications with Wallace (which I have read). And, as Wallace determined, there is real world data. Feely, and his coauthor Dr. Christopher L. Sabine, PMEL Director, omitted 80 years of data, which incorporate more than 2 million records of ocean pH levels.
Feely’s chart, first mentioned, begins in 1988 — which is surprising as instrumental ocean pH data has been measured for more than 100 years since the invention of the glass electrode pH (GEPH) meter. As a hydrologist, Wallace was aware of GEPH’s history and found it odd that the Feely/Sabine work omitted it. He went to the source. The NOAA paper with the chart beginning in 1850 lists Dave Bard, with Pew Charitable Trust, as the contact.
Wallace sent Bard an email: “I’m looking in fact for the source references for the red curve in their plot which was labeled ‘Historical & Projected pH & Dissolved Co2.’ This plot is at the top of the second page. It covers the period of my interest.” Bard responded and suggested that Wallace communicate with Feely and Sabine–which he did over a period of several months. Wallace asked again for the “time series data (NOT MODELING) of ocean pH for 20th century.” Sabine responded by saying that it was inappropriate for Wallace to question their “motives or quality of our science,” adding that if he continued in this manner, “you will not last long in your career.”

Emphasis mine. I’ll leave it to you to guess how it ends. (h/t TimR)

Mann Down

Mark Steyn;

In an almost equally horrendous setback for climate alarmism, Climate Change – The Musical is closing. It was funded by the National Science Foundation – ie, your tax dollars. But no doubt it was all part of a scientific experiment to determine the quickest way to lose three-quarters of a million bucks. They’d have been better off doing Little Orphan Mannie, in which the cherubic moppet sings “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Tree-Ring”.

The Sound Of Settled Science

The Cook et al. (2013) 97% paper included a bunch of psychology studies, marketing papers, and surveys of the general public as scientific endorsement of anthropogenic climate change.
Let’s go ahead and walk through that sentence again. The Cook et al 97% paper included a bunch of psychology studies, marketing papers, and surveys of the general public as scientific endorsement of anthropogenic climate change.

This one’s a stunner.

The Sound Of Settled Science

Although the underlying technical material in the IPCC’s fifth major report was widely agreed upon and published intact, “heated negotiations among scientific authors and diplomats led to substantial deletion of figures and text from the influential ‘Summary for Policy-makers,'” writes Brad Wible, an editor at the journal Science […]
A chart removed from the IPCC summary but published in Science shows that much of the growth in recent greenhouse gas emissions comes from Asia, with smaller contributions from the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Emissions in developed countries have continued to rise, but at a much slower rate.

In other words, business as usual.

Climategate: Tortured Temperatures

Continued…

In 2007 I started monitoring a few GISS stations. Amundsen-Scott, Vostok, Halley, Davis in Antarctica. Then a few more over the years. It was just to check some of the claims of data changing. Also to see if I could plot the temps over time. Some small changes at first, but nothing of concern.
In 2008 I added more stations such as Nuuk, to check more claims. It is easy to save the temp files for each station. Picking a few stations at random points around the GISS globe, up to about 12.
Goddard was right. Past data points were changing. Usually small amounts on a monthly basis. Some station data did not change at all, but only the new monthly data were added.
In 2009 I was saving monthly data for 15 stations.Every month the most recent data is added to the end of each file. But, scanning past data it became apparent that some historical station data was being “revised” almost completely. That means that a time plot shifted by enough to notice on a temperature plot. Usually the “new” plot showed that the past became cooler. Small amounts, maybe one tenth of a degree. When I got to 20 stations, I noticed that one or two sets of data were being extensively revised every month. At the end of 2009 there was a sudden revision of more stations by larger amounts. Almost always the data before 1960 was getting cooler.
By 2010 I was up to 30 stations, plus the Antarctic four.
Akureyri, Bartow, Beaver City, Concordia, Crete NE, Ellsworth, Franklin, Gothenburg, Hanford, Honolulu, Hilo, Jan Mayen, Kodiak, Kwajaalein, La Serena, Loup City, Minden, Nantes, Nome, Norfolk Island, Nuuk, Red Cloud, St. Helena, St. Paul, Steffenville, Thiruvanantha, Truk, Wakeeny, Yakutat, Yamba.
Downloading 30 sets of temperature data to save. Then putting all data into an excel file to make plots. Then comparing time plots to see where individual data points had changed. It became clear that a regular revision of about 10 percent of all GISS stations was taking place on a monthly basis.
Every month in 2010, three of the 30 stations has changes to past data points that were visible by plotting. Looking at every point for every station is not possible, but scanning at random shows that many stations have small changes. 2011 was about the same, but at the end of 2011 was another substantial change to many stations.
In early 2012 my 10 year old hard drive died. I had a separate backup, but it was found to be virus infected to the extent that I could not save all data. I still have the drive and can open some files but can’t copy files to another drive.
In 2012 GISS began making larger changes to more past data. Some stations were showing monthly changes that could only be described as “erratic” with some large shifts for a couple months, followed by data returning to values from months earlier. Sometime in December 2012 was a very large change in past data for many stations. Some stations showed data that stopped in 2007 or 2008. In March 2013 those stations were suddenly “restored” and resumed showing complete data up to March 2013.
Every month GISS changes past data by small amounts to some historical data. Some stations are being selected for larger revisions at random times. For some stations, portions of data from decades ago vanishes completely. The numbers are replaced with “999.9″ indicating no data. Months later those same past data points re-appear, just as they were before, sometimes with small adjustments. If what is happening to a sample of 30 stations is any indication of the entire GISS data set, then I’d say that there is an Orwellian plot to manipulate the past.
There is no record of these past changes, it would be impossible to verify or reproduce those changes. Over the years, the past keeps getting colder.

Climategate: Tortured Temperatures

Paul Homewood;

From this dataset, I picked the one at the top of the list, (which appears to be totally random), Station number 415429, which is Luling, Texas. […]
…. according to the USHCN dataset, all ten months from March to December are “Estimated”. Why, when there is full data available?
But it gets worse. The table below compares the actual station data with what USHCN describe as “the bias-adjusted temperature”. The results are shocking.
In other words, the adjustments have added an astonishing 1.35C to the annual temperature for 2013. Note also that I have included the same figures for 1934, which show that the adjustment has reduced temperatures that year by 0.91C. So, the net effect of the adjustments between 1934 and 2013 has been to add 2.26C of warming.
Note as well, that the largest adjustments are for the estimated months of March – December. This is something that Steve Goddard has been emphasising.
It is plain that these adjustments made are not justifiable in any way. It is also clear that the number of “Estimated” measurements made are not justified either, as the real data is there, present and correct.

Environmentalists The World Over Finally Admit They’ve Made It All Up

Nahhh, not really. Happy April Fools Day!
James Delingpole reports on the never-ending PR campaign where facts don’t matter – here, here, & here.

Green ideologues working for the British government helped “sex up” the latest Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) report in order to make its conclusions sound more scary than the evidence warrants, it emerged today.

The draft version of the report’s Summary For Policymakers made the startling admission that the economic damage caused by “climate change” would be between 0.2 and 2 percent of global GDP – significantly less than the doomsday predictions made in the 2006 Stern report (which estimated the damage at between 5 and 20 percent of global GDP).

Just in time for April Fools’ Day, the MSM was doing a full court propaganda campaign yesterday. Here’s a sampling full of mistruths and outright fiction. Dr. Tim Ball is trying to fight back against the propagandists.

Global Warming Cult Members on Display

Have you ever challenged a person when they’ve used the term “denier” to describe people who question the Theory of Man-made Global Warming? I have. But in every single case, when I’ve pointed out to them that their use of the “D” word is a direct reference/comparison to Holocaust Deniers, they adamantly state that it is not. In some ways, I believe them, for most are LIPs (Low Information Parrots) who are simply regurgitating the latest talking points they’ve absorbed from their MSM “news” sources.
However, no such excuse can be given to educated Leftists – the politicians and writers and academics who clearly DO know better. In a recent column, James Delingpole exposes one such person:

Global warming ‘deniers’ are as bad as ‘Holocaust deniers’ because climate change is as “as certain as Auschwitz”, a Guardian columnist, Nick Cohen, has claimed.

Delingpole provides a link to an interesting article published a month ago which provides a lengthy gallery of prominent Leftists and their use of the term “denier”.

In the Mail

I received a peculiar e-mail this morning:
The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft at Bergen, Norway
Reports from fishermen, seal hunters, and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes.
Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.
Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds.Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt, the sea will rise and make most coastal cities uninhabitable.
By the way, I apologize; I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922, as reported by the AP and published in The Washington Post – 91 years ago.

Climategate 3.0

The anonymous climate document leaker aka “Mr. FOIA” has released a new batch of e-mails and documents in what is being described as Climategate 3.0. Ron Arnold reports on this here and Roy Green interviews Arnold here (about 2:20 from the start).
For the first time ever, the anonymous leaker has purportedly released his own thoughts. Of course the MSM and Suzuki-Gore cult members will do everything they can to suppress this but it’s well worth a read.

The CBC’s Australian Cousin

SDA readers may take some solace in finding out that the CBC is not the only highly biased taxpayer funded “news” organization in the world. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Managing Director, Mark Scott, recently pronounced that his network does not have any particular political bias. Another Australian begs to differ. Reading through that, a lot of the same devious techniques employed there are also used by the CBC.
The best line of all was this one:

“I guess if you stand on a platform that leans to the left for long enough, it begins to seem level again.”
