The Sound Of All Hell Breaking Loose: Now Searchable!

The CRU emails are now searchable. Here's one I stumbled across. (Bolding mine, read from bottom up.)

From: Keith Briffa To: Subject: Re: quick note on TAR Date: Sun Apr 29 19:53:16 2007

your words are a real boost to me at the moment. I found myself questioning the whole process and being often frustrated at the formulaic way things had to be done - often wasting time and going down dead ends. I really thank you for taking the time to say these kind words . I tried hard to balance the needs of the science and the IPCC , which were not always the same. I worried that you might think I gave the impression of not supporting you well enough while trying to report on the issues and uncertainties . Much had to be removed and I was particularly unhappy that I could not get the statement into the SPM regarding the AR4 reinforcement of the results and conclusions of the TAR. I tried my best but we were basically railroaded by Susan*. I am happy to pass the mantle on to someone else next time. I feel I have basically produced nothing original or substantive of my own since this whole process started. I am at this moment , having to work on the ENV submission to the forthcoming UK Research Assessment exercise , again instead of actually doing some useful research ! Anyway thanks again Mike.... really appreciated when it comes from you very best wishes

At 18:14 29/04/2007, you wrote:

Keith, just a quick note to let you know I've had a chance to read over the key bits on last millennium in the final version of the chapter, and I think you did a great job. obviously, this was one of the most (if not the most) contentious areas in the entire report, and you found a way to (in my view) convey the the science accurately, but in a way that I believe will be immune to criticisms of bias or neglect--you dealt w/ all of the controversies, but in a very even-handed and fair way. bravo! I hope you have an opportunity to relax a bit now. looking forward to buying you a beer next time we have an opportunity :)

Posted by: ron in kelowna ∴ at November 21, 2009 6:18 PM

The problem is that there is not enough "real scientific work" to go around so the second stringers must latch onto some sort of scam artist empire builder with a political agenda and good access to slush funds.

Posted by: Sgt Lejaune at November 21, 2009 6:20 PM

ron in kelowna, Kate... this deserves a post of its own and should be read in entirety. I saw much of what you posted last night but all it inspired was revulsion. Tim Ball has the magnitude of this scandal 'dead to rights'.

The Death Blow to Climate Science

The emails obtained are a frightening record of arrogance, and deception far beyond his 2005 effort.

Another glimpse into what the files and emails reveal was the report by Professor Deming. He wrote, “ With publication of an article in Science (in 1995) I gained sufficient credibility in the community of scientists working on climate change. They thought I was one of them someone who would pervert science in the service of social and political causes. So one of them let his guard down. A major person working in the area of climate change and global warming sent me an astonishing email that said. “We must get rid of the Medieval Warm Period.” The person in question was Jonathan Overpeck and his even more revealing emails are part of those exposed by the hacker. It is now very clear that Deming’s charge was precise. They have perverted science in the service of social and political causes.

Professor Wegman showed how this “community of scientists” published together and peer reviewed each other’s work. I was always suspicious about why peer review was such a big deal. Now all my suspicions are confirmed. The emails reveal how they controlled the process, including manipulating some of the major journals like Science and Nature. We know the editor of the Journal of Climate, Andrew Weaver, was one of the “community”. They organized lists of reviewers when required making sure they gave the editor only favorable names. They threatened to isolate and marginalize one editor who they believed was recalcitrant.
Total Control

These people controlled the global weather data used by the IPCC through the joint Hadley and CRU and produced the HadCRUT data. They controlled the IPCC, especially crucial chapters and especially preparation of the Summary for PolicyMakers (SPM). Stephen Schneider was a prime mover there from the earliest reports to the most influential in 2001. They also had a left wing conduit to the New York Times. The emails between Andy Revkin and the community are very revealing and must place his journalistic integrity in serious jeopardy. Of course the IPCC Reports and especially the SPM Reports are the basis for Kyoto and the Copenhagen Accord, but now we know they are based on completely falsified and manipulated data and science. It is no longer a suspicion. Surely this is the death knell for the CRU, the IPCC, Kyoto and Copenhagen and the Carbon Credits shell game.

CO2 never was a problem and all the machinations and deceptions exposed by these files prove that it was the greatest deception in history, but nobody is laughing. It is a very sad day for science and especially my chosen area of climate science. As I expected now it is all exposed I find there is no pleasure in “I told you so.”

From what is left of the smokin' ruins of the CRU (Climate Research Unit) website

It is so laughable, so sad, so litigation-able.

Under the "About Us' tab;

[ The Climatic Research Unit is widely recognised as one of the world's leading institutions concerned with the study of natural and anthropogenic climate change. ]

Ya, sure.

[ Consisting of a staff of around thirty research scientists and students, the Unit has developed a number of data sets ... ]

Developed !!?? As in 'pulled out of thin air'.

[ The aim of the Climatic Research Unit is to improve scientific understanding in three areas]

Improve scientific understanding !? ( .. it's just that so much of what the left knows is wrong)

[ The Unit undertakes both pure and applied research, ..]

[ Alongside its research activities, the Unit has an educational role through its contribution to formal teaching with the School of Environmental Sciences (most notably, the MSc in Climate Change]

Think that degree will be on any future resumes ?

[ It is regarded as an authoritative source of information on both the science and policy aspects of climate change by the media and maintains a high public profile.]

Regarded as an authoritative source by the media !!! Figures.

[ .. and maintains a high public profile. ]

Except when Steve McIntyre calls.

[ The staff of the Unit have an enviable publication record, .... ]

Green with envy !!!

All in all, as clear an example as there is for the separation of university and state.

You would hope that because decisions were made and money was spent based on the findings of these scientists that they would be liable and could be sued. As a group and individually.

I would love to see how the Cons will tell Canadians now that we must follow the USA on Cap & Trade as proposed by the Prez.

Canada set the example by walking out at UN when the Arab nations attacked Israel. They should set the example by not attending the Global Warming conference in Europe. Then he should state that Canada will try its best to fight pollution of the water, soil and air for the good of the country and not because of the money trabsfer to the polluting nations like China, India, Russia etc. If they still want to flog this dead horse then it is time for an independent to run and state clearly that Global Warming is a lie, that is the one who will get votes.

The best part is the the Green Party will have a very dificult time to run in the next election - and finally get rid of the rude debator Elizabeth May.

This came up from searching "report changed":

I am very strongly in favor of as wide and rapid a distribution as
possible for endorsements. I think the only thing that counts is
numbers. The media is going to say "1000 scientists signed" or "1500
signed". No one is going to check if it is 600 with PhDs versus 2000
without. They will mention the prominent ones, but that is a
different story.

Conclusion -- Forget the screening, forget asking
them about their last publication (most will ignore you.) Get those

While this should be enough to blow the global warming scam right out of the water, a quick scan of the newspapers and I can find not a single article about any of this. Is it too early. Hopefully, but I wouldn't be the least surprised if this is greeted by a big yawn by the media. 2 days later and still not a peep out of the MSM. Tried googleing Hadley CRU Hacked, and all I come up with his links to blogs.

Given that the media has spent the last 3 or 4 years doing an absolute full court press on any and every claim put forth by the IPCC, Gore, et al, you would think this item might, just might, be on their radar. And still nothing.

A damning indictment of how complicit big media was in this massive fraud.

And when you consider what the ramifications would/will be if a "treaty" like the one being put forth at Copenhagen is ever signed - I dont think treasonous is to strong a word to describe the actions of those involved.

Posted by: ward at November 21, 2009 7:44 PM

I think the MSM will leave the topic alone for a bit.

1) It is complex, as in involving lots of emails to read and clarify. most dont follow the issue closely

2) If they have been burned once, apparently by buying into this, then they will be skeptical of all sides.

The one good reslt out of all of this might be the realse of all data, rigourous standards being applied etc etc. If proper science, uncorrupted by this chicanery still shows something then fine...but I have had and continue to have doubts. How in the world did a teleconnection hypothesis even get taken seriously in the place.

Finally, involvement of a selected media....just like Wall Street.

I gave up on Little Green Footballs when he went anti-anti-jihad and began seeing white supremacists behind every tree.
But out of curiosity, and remembering CJ's brilliant work de-bunking the phony MS Word Bush-national guard memo, I took a peek.

The thread I saw referred to it as a non-controversy. He actually tried to spin "tricks" and "hide the decline" as benign informal science chat. AND, he used the word "infamous denialist" in reference to somebody.

So, it's especially comforting getting Dr. Ball's view on this. I've been a bit puzzled by the seemingly mild reaction in the blogosphere and was a bit concerned that sda may have gone overboard too quickly. I was also a bit unsure about the ethics of sharing this purloined info but have now come to see that this isn't PRIVATE correspondence at all. This was secretive FOIA-resistant skullduggery.

A bit of a side note:

The "terms and conditions" of purchase on "Carbon Credits" has no hold-harmless agreement or indemnification agreement in any of the non-profit organizations that I have viewed.

Therefore, you have to wonder what the repercussions will be when the house of cards clearly falls. It would fraud, grand larceny, and quite possibly reflect a whole host of potentially applied clauses from the RICO Act.

That's just the criminal side of the law. The civil class action suits would dwarf even the tobacco civil suits in size. Essentially, the carbon credit non-profits are hanging out there naked. They, in turn, would attempt to add defendants to spread the liability in amended complaints, which would surely add those individuals who "fudged data," instituted scare tactics in the form of articles, films and reports...etc...

If you see where I'm going you will conclude that these folks are no longer trying to "save the planet." They are only now realizing that they are in a fight to save their own personal wealth and portfolios.

Most unlike you, Melanie, to only call East Anglia University "one of the principal academic centres behind anthropogenic global warming theory". Why not also tell your readers (though British ones should be aware of it) that East Anglia is also, to all intents and purposes, the academic headquarters of marxist rearguard action in all of Europe, the think-tank that produced half the 'human sciences' research that ground British society to dust for three decades, the source of most Israel-bashing campaigns in UK universities and the natural place for someone like Ilan Pappe to take refuge when the streets of Israel, the country he was betraying every day, became unsafe for him?

This seemed kind of interesting:

I may have inadvertently had a hand in this millennium graph! I recall getting a fax from
Jack with a hand-drawn graph
, that he asked me to review. Where he got his version from, I
don't know. I think I scribbled out part of the line and amended it in some way, but have
no recollection of exactly what I did to it. And whether he edited it further, I don't
know. But as it was purely schematic (& appears to go through ~1950) perhaps it's not so
bad. I note, however, that in the more colourful version of the much embellished graph
that Stefan circulated (
the end-point has been changed to 2000, which puts quite a different spin on things. They
also seem to have fabricated a scale for the purported temperature changes. In any case,
the graph has no objective basis whatsoever; it is purely a "visual guess" at what
happened, like something we might sketch on a napkin at a party for some overly persistent
..... (so make sure you don't leave such things on the table...).
What made the last millennium graph famous (notorious!) was that Chris Folland must have
seen it and reproduced it in the 1995 IPCC chapter he was editing.
I don't think he gave a
citation and it thus appeared to have the imprimatur of the IPCC. Having submitted a great
deal of text for that chapter, I remember being really pissed off that Chris essentially
ignored all the input, and wrote his own version of the paleoclimate record in that volume.

There are other examples of how Jack Eddy's grey literature publication was misused. In a
paper in Science by Zielinski et al. (1994) [v.264, p.448-452]--attached-- they reproduced
[in Figure 1c] a similarly schematic version of Holocene temperatures giving the following
citation, "Taken from J. A. Eddy and R. S. Bradley, Earth-quest 5 (insert) (1991), as
modified from J. T. Houghton, G. J. Jenkins, J. J. Ephraums, Climate Change, The IPCC
Scientific Assessment (Cambridge Univ. Press, Cambridge, 1990)."
But I had nothing to do with that one!
So, that's how a crude fax from Jack Eddy became the definitive IPCC record on the last

I haven't read all of the comments on the CRU whistleblower threads so maybe this has been mentioned.

Regardless of the medias willful blindness, this info will be valuable for US opponents of the EPA's CO2 agenda. If the issue goes to court, the e-mails and other information would go a long way in proving that CO2 is not a pollutant. The EPA was the Big Stick threat used to pressure the US Senate to pass Cap and Trade legislation. Without this leverage, the Senate has less incentive to anger the voters by passing a new tax. This is good news for Canada because the CPC was determined to 'harmonize' our legislation with the US. No US cap and trade, no Canadian Cap and Trade.

Will the MSM call this ClimateGate?
If they ever notice that is?

I am rather shocked by some of this. I know that I shouldn't be.

Take this from first principles.

A tree only grows on land. That excludes 70% of the earth covered by
water. A tree does no grow on ice. A tree does not grow in a desert. A
tree does not grow on grassland-savannahs. A tree does not grow in
alpine areas. A tree does not grow in the tundra

We are left with perhaps 15% of the planet upon which forests
grow/grew. That does not make any studies from tree rings global, or
even hemispheric.

The width and density of tree rings is dependent upon the following
variables which cannot be reliably separated from each other.

sunlight - if the sun varies, the ring will vary. But not at night of
cloudiness - more clouds, less sun, less ring.
pests/disease - a caterpillar or locust plague will reduce
access to sunlight - competition within a forest can disadvantage or
advantage some trees.
moisture/rainfall - a key variable. Trees do not prosper in a drought
even if there's a heat wave.
snow packing in spring around the base of the trees retards growth
temperature - finally!

The tree ring is a composite of all these variables, not merely of
temperature. Therefore on the 15% of the planet covered by trees, their
rings do not and cannot accurately record temperature in isolation from
the other environmental variables.

In my article on Greening Earth Society on the Hockey Stick, I point to
other evidence which contradicts Mann's theory. The Idso's have produced
more of that evidence, and a new article on Greening Earth has
`unearthed' even more.

Mann's theory simply does not stack up. But that was not the key issue.
Anyone can put up a dud theory from time to time. What is at issue is
the uncritical zeal with which the industry siezed on the theory before
its scientific value had been properly tested. In one go, they tossed
aside dozens of studies which confirmed the existence of the MWE and LIA
as global events, and all on the basis of tree rings - a proxy which has
all the deficiencies I have stated above.

The worst thing I can say about any paper such as his is that it is `bad
science'. Legal restraint prevents me going further. But in his case,
only those restraints prevent me going *much* further.

Some of you older folks will remember the Watergate hearings. I, for one, can hardly wait. And seeing as how we now have nifty new technology, I'll be able to watch episodes via my computer whenever it's convenient for me. I only hope it won't take more than a year or two to get started. I think tricky-Dicky's exploits are going to look rather pale by comparison. After all, Watergate bugging incident was against citizens of the President's own country. CRUgate or Climategate is a conspiracy that affects the entire planet.

It will be interesting to see how hearings will be conducted, if indeed they are, when the key perpetrators of the skulduggery are based in several different countries. But I suppose the UK can lead the way (once there's a new PM in place) with the "scientists" working for the Climate Research Unit.

I wonder who Climategate's Deep Throat is? Will we have to wait until he dies to find out? Are their any journalists digging around to blow this story right out of the water? I don't think we have any Woodwards and Bernsteins willing to delve into this. My hunch is that most journalists are right in bed with the scammers themselves and understand that their own reputations have been highly compromised by their wholesale endorsement of the scammers and their message.

In the meantime, if there is anything close to an endorsement of a plan to replace Kyoto by Canada, there will be hell to pay. The Liberal Party won't be the only one in disarray.

It's on, as expected, FOX news.

But it's the blogs that are dealing with it.

The left is defining it as 'old data' of 12 years ago that has been annuled by modern data (Huffington Post) and is now being used to prop up 'conspiracy theorists' who are denying AGW.

And as others have pointed out, this will harm the credibility of the AGW cult but won't stop its political agenda. That's because it isn't a scientific theory but is only a political agenda of wealth 'redistribution' and a weakening of the West's economy.

It is particularly easy for people to believe in ideology that is empirically empty but emotionally laden, especially with apocalyptic emotional hues. So, AGW isn't over, because the emphasis will turn to the guilt trip about 'the impoverished 'developing countries' (such as China and India, who are busy becoming heavy industry capitalists all on their own).

Music is such a big part of our lives. We tend to relate songs of our past to what is happening today.

The simplest of lyrics from years past seem to be so appropriate today. So I offer: (and please feel free to join in)

Roy Orbison: Its Over - it over -its over .... ITS OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVERRRRRRRRRR!; and

na na na na -
na na na na -
hey hey hey

GOO OOD Byeeeee!!!!!

Just fits - ya know.

Like others, I am not convinced these latest revelations will thwart the intentions of the global warming crowd. But surely, SURELY, the media will not ignore what's been discovered. In general I am hard on the media, but I still have some hope that they are not deliberate manipulators of the truth.

"This event is up on Fox News website"
News to me, they must be hiding it somewhere anybody have a link?
The only "MSM" I can find with this story is The Wall Street Journal

There is more going on than meets the eye, I do not think it a coincidence that the "50 Days to Save the Earth" was postponed. Perhaps the hack was discovered but the perpetrator was not, so instead of going ahead with the "50 Days to Save the Earth" Copenhagen conference, a strategy was devised to deal with the fall out before the conference - just a thought - seems strange to me that the Copenhagen conference was postponed - after all - we only have 50 days.

Came accross this blog comment over at Michelle Malkin site, I thought SDA readers would find it amusing:

If there is no global warming, then how can we explain the increase in Philippine hookers? I thought the link between the two is conclusive and debate was over. Or maybe the data on the hookers has been manipulated too? Could it be that there has been a decrease in Asian prostitutes, thus indicating the earth is actually cooling and this is being covered up?

Keith Briffa's the one to follow, alright.
This sensitive guy should be placed on (academic) suicide watch.
He might just break for the truth.

I know a trick for ensuring that my cabinet sides are always cut exactly 90 degrees. I also know a slick trick for getting varnish to dry faster. I guess that proves that woodworking is all a lie.

Apparently Rev doesn't know the trick of applying varnish in a well ventilated room.

While the emails are interesting, the data is damning. My long post today on why this is all a statistical fraud (and some insight into that '1940's blip' - which is actually quite astounding
