  1. Louis Riel, not dead enough.
Having lived in Manitoba (yep, I’ve been almost everywhere), I’ve had my fill of this mythical “hero”. Somehow, the act of Canada buying up a piece of land owned by a trading company is a good reason for a revolt and treason. I mean, Canada didn’t invade the place, they bought a portion of Rupert’s Land which wasn’t a soveren country but a tract of land. To hear a Manitoban describe it you would have thought Riel was Nelson Mandela.

  2. In the late 90’s I had an email campaign going for “family day” because thats the name of the same holiday the slackers in Alberta get.
Course Family day implies something bad if you are a socialist where people need government not families.
Louis Riel was born October 22, 1844 So if its for him should the day not be in October? Not the same day as Family day in Alberta?
He twice rebelled against the government, in Manitoba Chief Peguis saved the lives of many home boys [whites] who were being slaughtered at the hands of riels henchmen. Presumably because they were too stupid to own guns.
Riel also deliberately executed Thomas Scott who was said to be a bigot so thats ok which led Tom Broadbeck in todays Winnipeg Sun to say he was a man of peace.

  3. I think that the strangest thing about this story is how the NDP government used school children as advisors to choose a name for a Provincial holiday.
“After consulting with a panel of students who viewed suggested names submitted by their peers at 114 schools.”

Why didn’t they go with Strawberry Shortcake Day or maybe Spiderman Day?

  4. Hey, they should issue pistols and we can all go shoot a bunch of stuff up!
That should keep the gun control fanatics in a lather.
We should do something more “Canadian”; like an 1837 Rebellion Day. A Canadian version of Guy Fawkes!
Sounds like it would get positively explosive popular support!
    Cheers

  5. I made the same comment at DMB, but it bears repeating:
Given the current re-write in history, does this mean our great-grandkids will eventually be celebrating Clifford Olsen Day?

  6. Ya gotta admit though those Dippers know how to play the game. First you brainwash students with the Riel the savior stories then you get then to “pick” the name of a holiday. Brilliant! Anyone complaining will be nothing more than a meanie picking on innocent children.
Pity that Manitoba history is such that all they can cheer about is a megalomaniac and traitor, although he proved to be a real swinger in the end. (ouch)

  7. Yes we have so much to proud of in our happy little socialist paradise….
Louis Riel and Mo Strong … one hung and yet revered thanks to revisionist historians … the other alive and well and working hard to bring in the new world order!

  8. Montreal Massacre Day is already practically a national “holiday”, given the white ribbons and the lowering of flags for a bunch of women who, while unfortunate, didn’t serve in the armed forces, weren’t heads of state and didn’t die in the service of their country.
I like to think of that lowered flag as represented the dubious manhood of the male students who sheepishly fled the classroom, but then I would…

  9. Gee, Louis Riel was away ahead of Che Guevara.
When do the t-shirts come out, or are they already on the market?
But in today’s Crooked Liberal justice system, Louis would have been caught and released, probably the same day.
Clearly he was a victim of childhood circumstances and couldn’t help himself, of course.

  10. Did anyone ask ‘the students’ WHY they thought Riel is a ‘hero’? Did one teacher ask their students if they thought they would be better off today if Manitoba was an independant country? Is Manitoba thinking of forming a separatist Party of their own – or do they have one; the Dippers of Manitoba, you know the outfit that approved this new holiday? Hummm?

  11. I propose the holiday be named Unrielity Day. Every time I read about some new program unveiled by the kookocracy, I have a feeling of unreality.

  12. “Did one teacher ask their students if they thought they would be better off today if Manitoba was an independant country?”
Manitoba is so dependent on Federal Transfer payments, if they were independent they’d be part of the PLO.
    Louis Riel. Loser.

  13. Here in Manitoba most of the teachers are far left socialists and they teach kids that Riel was a hero instead of the criminal that he was.

  14. Look, kids, you can’t conclude that something is wrong just because the NDP does it. Yes, I know they’re almost always wrong. Yes, I know they usually do things precisely because they’re wrong. But the fact is, they sometimes get tired, lose interest, get distracted, and inadvertently do things which sane people ought not to find objectionable. Younger readers may never have seen this in their lifetimes, but trust me, it has happened before and it’s just happened again.
Now, it would be appalling for the federal government to honour Riel. They have been foolish enough to attempt it in the past and they’ve been fiercely criticized for it, and rightly so. And it would be, to say the least, inappropriate for the government of Saskatchewan to do anything like this. Riel’s career in Saskatchewan was as an insane and violent criminal, and he symbolizes inter-racial hatred and violent discord. So it’s probably appropriate to name a student pub after him, or so you’d think around closing time on a Friday night, but nothing like this.
But this is Manitoba doing this. And in Manitoba, Riel was a legitimate leader and is a symbol of unity and identity, as well as indisputably a father of Confederation. He deserves recognition and honour. Yes, a decade after he last set foot in Manitoba, he had a disreputable career elsewhere. That’s not relevant to whether he should be honoured by the people he led and served honourably.
