Shaking Up The Race

John Fund;

Every GOP candidate is nervously watching the reaction to his possible entry. J.C. Watts, an Oklahoma congressman from 1995 to 2003, has endorsed him: “I define Fred Thompson as AC, what’s AC? All class.”
Fan blogs for “Law and Order” note that since the show is especially popular among women, a Thompson race could help close the GOP’s “gender gap.” The most pithy comment is from Craig Hammond, a former mayor of Bluefield, W.Va. He told the Bluefield News: “He’s the tall timber we’ve been waiting for. He’s the total package. He can hold the red states and pick up a few blue ones along the way.”

Here’s my prediction: If Fred Thompson formally enters the race for the US Presidency in 2008, watch for a Law & Order episode in which Arthur Branch is caught on tape surrounded by naked 8 year old boys.
Update – Pajamas Media exclusive interview with Fred Thompson on the Iranian reaction to the movie “300”.

I must say that I’m impressed that Hollywood took on a politically incorrect villian. Must have run out of neo-Nazis. So now these sensitive souls in Iran think that Hollywood is part of a U.S. government conspiracy to humiliate them into submission. I can only wish we were that effective.

  1. Wouldn’t be surprised. I was a major fan of that show, still love the old ones, but the onslaught of cheap, obvious propaganda* is getting hard to take. I check out the program description, maybe decide to tape it, frequently give up after twenty or so minutes.
*Look at us! We hate republicans!

  2. This guy’s candidacy is such a non-starter! It’s not serious. What a waste of pixels even mentioning him. He’s made a few soothing sounds as SENATOR. We seen ‘im on tha Teevee. What makes anybody think he’s got anything going for him? RUDY ’08 all the way.

  3. Zog et al,
Please! Are you as aware of the current scene as the gone and forgotten monarch of Albania?!
Fred Thompson has not only been a US Senator but the Attorney General of Tennessee, apart from his acting career.
A candidate with SoCred street smarts and the ability to evangelize conservative ideas across a broad spectrum? If you can’t see that this is a dream candidacy with bankability — unlike that of Barack Hussein Obama — all I can say is, increase your dosage!

  4. I’m with Johannes – all the way with Giuiani. However, I remember Thompson as a Senator from Tennessee and I would be pretty happy with him as well.

  5. Rudy for President: Fred Thompson for VP, or AG. But like Bcer, I’d be plenty happy to see him in the White House, too. To add to what’s already been said in the hopes of making Johannes and Zog realize Thompson’s not “just an actor,” I’d also remind them he was minority (GOP) counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Watergate, opposite (among others) a certain freshly-minted lawyer by the name of Hillary Rodham.

  6. oh the mind reels… (pun intended!!!)
such mixing of fantasy and ‘reality’.
tripartite commission come on down !!!
    LOL !!!
    youre all PUPPETS.
cripes people, its a TELEVISION SHOW. they are ACTORS *playing* a part which had been written for them weeks or months prior, drawing on their individual strengths and personality to flesh out the character.
and this is a biiiiiggg factor in selecting the leader of the free world???
    wwooopphhhh. hopeless.

  7. Hey, bollocks, Fred Dalton Thompson, should he choose to run, and should he win, would not be the first actor to be POTUS.
The last one surprised a lot of us with how well he did the job.

  8. Paul Canniff,
Thanks for the info, although I don’t grock the sarcasm. I’m not a teen-ager, so why should I know that the guy is/was an actor? Further, although I do follow U.S. politics from afar and consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable on the subject, I’m not familiar with every obscure senator from Dixie.
Seriously, has he ever done anything as a politician that would draw attention outside of his own state, much less in my furin domain?
I’m familiar with the senators in North Dakota and Montana because their anti-Canadian antics are important to me. Can you even name them without googling?

  9. Rudy is a Liberal. He has no business running for the GOP. Too many wacko ideas in areas of traditional Republican strenght. Fred will slay him if he chooses to run.

  10. Shirley (Temple) Black. Ronald Regan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sonny Bono, Clint Eastwood, Jesse Ventura, and I’m sure others from the entertainment industry have made the leap. The one from screenwriters imagination to ..well GOD (in their minds). Why not Freddy? (Thompson, that is, not Kruger)
Even our own Kenny “puck in the head” Dryden was a public figure before he got a law degree, and headed over to the dark “stuffed envelopes” side.
Scotty Brison left the “Folie Bergeres” I believe. Or is that just a story he jokes about wishing he were a cast member?
Yeah these days you can dream..it may come true!
But not you Stephane…. be serious for a change.

  11. Wow Kate.
Tame your filters, eh! Should have read “will kick Hillary ass” Hope it shows up this time. I guess we’ll find out.

  12. Sen. Thompson’s resume is considerably more filled out then, say, Sen. Obama’s. Plus as co-chief counsel during the Senate Watergate hearings he was reponsible for the question that led to the downfall of the only President ever to resign. “What did the President know and when did he know it?”

  13. Until Fred Thompson came along, I had despaired over 2008, resolving not to vote for a one of the dogpack of tired old Republican retreads.
Let the voters get the kind of government they want, and deserve, said I.
Fred, I will give money to, support in the usual ways, and even walk the streets for, like I did for Bush in 2000 & 2004. ( Yes, I know how that sounds. Make of it what you will. )

  14. Peter Brown’s got an article about Thompson over at RCP this morning. Thompson’s certainly been getting a lot of beltway buzz in the past week or so, but it may already be too late to get into the campaign barring a McCain- like collapse of the Giuliani campaign and the failure of Mitt Romney’s campaign to pick up the slack. Most of the big organizers are already committed to other candidates, and even Thompson may not have the fortune he’ll need to finance a campaign himself, which he’ll need to do, at least at first, since there’s no organization or campaign money in place now (compare with HRC, for example). But Thompson can get in if there comes a time when people really want another candidate; money and organizers will show up on his doorstep then.
Hmmm… Arthur Branch and eight year old boys vs. Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. Nope. You decide between those two pictures.

  15. our own Kenny “puck in the head” Dryden was a public figure ”
and dont forget senator frank mahovalich.
and also the football star bob stanfield. LOL !!!
the italians on the other hand settle for porn stars running in their parliament (google it fer all I care)
politics makes strange bedfellows. literally !!! LOL !!!
