A Nation Of Ostriches

If given the choice, most Canadians would happily leave their heads stuck in the sand rather than meet the challenges of living and prospering in an industrial economy. Why does it take the musings of a foreign head of state to get us to wake up and think critically?

I may only be a cancelled bitumen pipeline, but after a cursory look at the modern state of the Canadian economy, it does strike me that your economic productivity sucks right now.

Per-capita GDP is in freefall. Each passing year, the average Canadian worker works the same number of hours as before, but they produce less. The problem is a lack of investment in per-worker productivity. If you hand a construction worker a shovel instead of a front-end loader, they’re simply not going to get as much done — and both your GDP and your people’s living standards will suffer in the long run.

  1. When a Canadian company, or worker, increases economic productivity, the governments tax a lot, sometimes over half, of the gains away.

    1. After getting screwed over the last two years I’ve decided that when I reach 200k I’m going to stop working. After that the tax becomes so onerous there’s no point bothering.

      1. There has always been a point in Canada where that tax problem rings true. I realized it back in the 70’s when I was doing very well and found I was hitting the 56% tax bracket.

  2. May I propose a nickname for the new candidate for leader of the Liberal Party?

    Zero con Carney

He can’t hide from his record of organizing UN ‘Climate Action Finance’ and the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero.

With him as PM I look forward to our government spending our money for Zero benefits while enriching his various colleagues.

    1. if we never had a liberal government, Canada would be advanced beyond that of the Japanese, Consecutive liberal governments under the direction of Quebec have handcuffed the country from economic progress

  3. When the government FORCES your contractor to drive an electric truck … he may be late to work every day … then will need a couple of recharge breaks during the day. Your materials delivery will be delayed, sorry. And our laborer was hospitalized after riding mass transit today, as he cannot afford an electric vehicle.

  4. Yes, per capita GDP is the measurement. Goal is to increase standard of living of Canadians. It is not to import hordes of third world labourers to increase total GDP. Freedland told the world that this importation of third world labourers was Canada’s “secret sauce” for our rising GDP. This has not been done by accident, it has been done on purpose by the Liberal/NDP coalition. Fellow travellers like Doug Ford have gone along standing “shoulder to shoulder” with the Prime Minister and in “love” with his Finance Minister.

    1. GDP per capita is the measurement. What’s interesting to me is the wide variation of GDP per capita between provinces and then compare those numbers to GDP per capita of other countries in international dollars. Productivity is considerably higher in some provinces and those provinces compare favorably to other big economies in the world.

According to 2023 numbers in Wiki the GDP per capita of various provinces and countries in international dollars :

      Alberta – $83,098
      Saskatchewan – $78,055
      Ontario – $61,659
      Quebec – $56,351
      US – $82,715
      UK – $60,735
      Germany – $69,532
      Taiwan – $74,409

      1. I’m guessing Quebec is like all those kewl European countries where workers get a guaranteed 10 weeks paid vacation per year.

        1. Lots of reasons Quebec lags. One is that they have prohibited things like natgas extraction. Second is government work : Quebecer’s are overrepresented in the federal public service because of bilingual requirements and Quebec has a big provincial government. Quebecers also tends to work fewer hours than Albertans. Their population is older than prairie provinces (more retirees). I also suspect a bigger percentage of Quebec’s population are on various forms of social assistance.

        1. Could be. I was looking for provincial rankings and comparing them to countries. Mostly because this shows how different Alberta and Saskatchewan are from the rest of Canada…the rest of Canada dislikes successful provinces and tries to economically shackle more successful provinces. Without being shackled by the rest of Canada, Alberta and Saskatchewan would likely have an even higher GDP per capita.

      2. and what’s even crazier is when you talk to people( tradesmen) that go up to Ft Mac for short term project work.. they’ll tell you that between the initial orientation and daily safety meetings, they’re lucky to get in 4 hours of actual work a day.. so much for productivity.. I can only imagine how much worse it is in Ontario and Quebec.

  5. For the last ten years, the Spawn has been at war with Canada’s number one industry and prosperity in general. Capital flight has been the result and the mindless, media-fed, mushy middle that determine political outcomes has been oblivious to it other than awareness of the rising cost of everything. They may not have learned much but they have grown to dislike and now celebrate the Spawn’s imminent departure. The awakening was the COVID Stalinism and the pride in the trucker’s protest. Trump’s impact has been the confirmation of the futility in the climate hysteria delusions that are the backbone of the Spawn/Singh and now Carney playbook.

  6. There is no work in Ontario or the GTA for me a Red Seal STEAMFITTER. Our country is dead. FILTHY LIBERALS have chased every big investor away from Pipelines to $36 Billion dollar LNG Plants.

PP can talk about bringing “investment” back, but there are Zero Pipelines sitting waiting to be built. No investor will risk Canada after the FILTHY LIBERALS have demonized Alberta and fleeced corporations for Millions of dollars in Legal fights.

WE’RE DONE. If it ain’t Government, than it ain’t getting built. DO NOT PUT NUKES IN THE WEST. The OPG Management behave as if Claus Schwab runs them. Sociopathic Managers, DEI Rainbow Crosswalks and Gay Sex Flags everywhere.
    IT IS TOXIC.

    1. 8 small modular reactors are being built in Darlington, Darlington Nuclear is in refurbishment (granted almost finished), and Pickering is about to start refurbishment. There is also a lot of work going on at the Bruce site. This must employ a lot of steam fitters.

      1. The FILTHY LIBERAL Nuke Plants are a great spot for Brown People. They look like Amazon Warehouses. Smr’s are a waste of money. Go big.
I’ve worked at all 3, managing 100’s of Trades, and in Korea and Germany.

        It’s a Pathetic Job Market.

  7. I’m going to quote Samuel Adams here.
“If you love wealth, better than you love Liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsel or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands that feed you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget you were ever our countrymen.”
Learn it, live it, love it.

  8. And now they want to boycott US goods. Chinese OK?
Canadians to Trump. Stop or we’ll shoot ourselves!

    1. “They” being the idiot response to Trump’s trade trash talk. Reasonable people await what actually unfolds.

  9. Just try being productive or self employed, the snivel servants crush you via bureaucracy and idiocy? One of my biggest regrets is putting my retirement funding in RSSP and a Riff, good luck getting access to your own money. If I could do it again all that money would be stuffed into an antique horse hair couch.

  10. Our main (not only) productivity issue now is the is the Liberals stifling economic output, ie., the NUMERATOR in the equation. They have killed pipelines and oil production and sales. Those industries could contribute many times their investment in sales revenue which is all productivity increasing. And building the infrastructure at the ports and in the ground to enable those guaranteed sales also bumps up productivity numbers. Not so government spending on green energy and batteries where the dollars spent go down the tubes.

    1. Who needs to work in Canada? The government will (force the taxpayers to) give you all sorts of free stuff.

  11. It becomes easier and easier for a government to control an unprosperous and disheartened populous.

  12. When economist Milton Friedman was in China he saw thousands of laborers with pitchforks and shovels working on a dam project. When he asked the supervisors why they were not using more machanized equipment–tractors, derricks and the like—he was told in no uncertain terms that they were dealing with an employment scenario…..so Milton immediately asked them that if the goal was to employ as many as possible why not give them spoons?
He was met with dead silence. Losing face is not something the Chinese do well….

  13. Arrogant Incompetence rules the day.
If you divide by zero you are infinitely wealthy..Just ask any NDP/Liberal Voter.
Starving and freezing admist plenty is Can Ahh Duh’s future.
Public Education has been such an amazing success that the average Canadian cannot even fill in their own tax forms.
The “Crab bucket” mentality of a “Well educated citizen” says it all.
We tried REFORM,even elected them to office.
    The lesson is clear.
A Kleptocracy cannot be reformed using Robert’s Rules of Committees.
Our cousins to the south have chosen “F.U” as the answer to the fools and bandits who attempted to dominate them.
We still worship “Experts” as they blunder, lie and destroy our lives.
Every good citizen knows that government is smarter than they are..According to the government funded media.
Yet most all of these “good citizens” have personal experience of civil servants ineptitude.
    2+2=5?
    22?
We can spend today money we do not have,on living large against the future income of other peoples children.
As we pass rule and regulation to ensure they cannot produce anything.
And reward productive people by stealing everything they have.
Can Ahh Duh.6 decades of socialist dreaming, welfare statehood and ever deepening poverty..

  14. I was thinking about Wednesday’s comment regarding abattoirs. Don’t we already ship most of our cattle and pork south to be processed?

  15. The faster a country is being pulled into socialism, the faster the sources of money for capital investment run away. Too much risk for scant reward.
