  1. There is little difference in the environmental impacts between the combustion of coal and the combustion of natural gas. In the public perception coal is dirty, heavy, black, and solid, while natural gas is “natural”, clean, light, and invisible. In terms of what actually goes up the chimney at the power plant, there is little to distinguish one from the other. If we could save a few Canadian coal-fired plants from conversion or demolition, we would be far ahead.

    1. I’m sorry but I’ll have to disagree with you on coal.
Coal, when burned, releases heavy metals of all types into the atmosphere.
      The worst being mercury.

      1. With or without scrubbers?
To my knowledge the harmful emissions have been reduced due to technology.

  2. Alberta has lots of coal. All China has to do is clear a route for us through BC. First 20 tons are free if they take over a 100 mile wide swath through BC and sell it to Alberta for a buck. We’ll throw in a tanker of crude too if they finish tmx.

  3. Environmentalists are the worst environmental criminals, and always have been. May because they are all stupid communists, but that’s redundant. Everything they do harms the environment, but advances communist interests.

yup… justin was right… dictatorships can turn on a dime…

“Last year, China boosted its new coal power plant capacity by more than 50 per cent,
and Beijing approved 155 new coal-fired power plants, and now China is building coal
    plants for export
    .”

  5. Greta’s hatred for western culture prevents her from seeing China for what it is. It’s easier and safer to dump on white westerners than the Chinkamanese.

    1. Greta has an emotional investment in climate change that isn’t rooted in anything close to reality. She literally knows nothing about anything. The power politicians running the western world coddle her because she appeals to their equally ignorant youth whom they are counting on to carry on the revolution and the media loves talking about her because they’re on the same intellectual level as she is. Like Paris Hilton or David Hogg, she’s one of those people who are famous for being famous, products of an unserious society.

  6. Let’s rephrase that.
China, if it does not find enough coal, will see its costs rise and then price itself out of competition.

  7. Actually, let’s just leave the coal in the ground until the green brain-washed Canadians wake up, value and carefully use our natural resources AND stop asking the governments to take care of them. Unfortunately, this will take at least 2 generations to reform education or a war or famine, the latter two being much more likely. Even a “plague” has not worked … yet.

China’s CPC (and all their associated companies) do not deserve to buy our coal anymore, and perhaps need to be cut down a peg or two and to endure their own domestic crises for a few years to keep them busy and arrange for an attitude adjustment.
Their diplomatic messaging of late has been anything but diplomatic and sniffs of cockiness.

Maybe, they will begin to think that messing with western (and exploiting 3rd world with colonialist belt and road initiatives) governments and lecturing us nastily has consequences. Ignoring and failing to enable bad behaviour actually works.

As well, we are seeing that broken supply chains are causing problems, partly due to everyones’ government regulations. We could begin making our own stuff, if we had a mind to do it.

Free trade is failing, as some gamed the system and governments grew. So, new rules: we keep our own stuff and trade only with proven friends, but mostly make our own stuff again. Do the math: cheap phone or shoes made in China with their low-wage labour plus massive transportation plus government rules plus carbon taxes = make it ourselves here with decent wages, no carbon taxes and a lower GST. If you want tankers and boats off the coast, stop ordering cheap shit on Amazon!

    1. There’s far too much here that’s wrong. Canada doesn’t export steam coal; it exports metallurgical coal.

As for China, it has only itself to blame. This shortage is created by its own policy of embargo of Australian steam coal.

  8. 99% of progs and probably 75% of cons are too stunned to realize that the green agenda is supported by our rivals in the global (oil and natural gas) energy markets so they can grab our shares.

THAT’s what we should be discussing on Thursday if it’s about truth and reconciliation — if we can’t reconcile our budget there is really no point in talking about social justice because at the very least, we can’t afford that.

I am very much in favour of having a comprehensive discussion of truth. And what I would say is, leftists, just shut up for about five years and let us fix all the messes you made, then we can do the reconciliation part.

  9. Clearly it’s the age of Idiocracy. St Greta (who knows NOTHING about the subject) is top news everywhere today. This is very stupid and suicidal for us-all, as a species.

    1. I’d rather not stir up that hornets nest but it might come to that. But wait does that mean Milley would have to warn them first?

      bverwey

    2. You win the idiocy prize for this thread. You do understand that China has its own nuclear weapons? You do understand that the whole point of the Cold War was that the United States and USSR were in stalemate because both of them had nuclear weapons?

  10. As far as reconciliation goes, my heartfelt and deeply contemplative response is simply:

Reconcile THIS! (raises extended middle finger)

You want to honour your ancestors? Stop being whiny bitches – they sure weren’t. Join the civilized world and SHUDDUP!

  11. Sure hope Greta heads to China to get the Communist People Party off of coal and get all of China to use Solar Panel and Wind for electricity!!! Should be interesting with all the smog!
