  14. The Globe and Mail, and other media, are reporting that WE charity is offering $12,000 to high school teachers if they can recruit 12 students for the new $900-million federal government program. The $12,00 is more than the maximum $5,000 a student can receive.

    1. Another birthday I’ll have to remember, along with Sir Isaac’s. I’m hoping that I might be able to make practical use of their invention today by trying to get through to a ham satellite, weather permitting. Right now, it looks like it’ll be a scrub as it’s been piddling off and on since yesterday.

        1. I think the word ‘calculus’ was the better choice. Going back to Old Latin or Greek:

          In Latin, ‘calculus’ means “pebble.” (the Romans used pebbles to do addition and subtraction on a counting board, the word became associated with computation.)

          In Latin, fluxus is the word for “flow.” (so, so, there are many things that flow.)

          I bet you would enjoy going back in history in a Time Machine? Imagine a conversation with these mathematicians? To observe them and listen to them talking about calculus would’ve been an interesting thing.

          In my world, I would like to observe the moment when the best (1000) inventions were ever made, here on Earth.

          And… to learn if there is life, as we know it, elsewhere in the Universe or Universes.

          Perhaps that is the ultimate definition of Heaven.

          1. I’m sure that Newton understood that differential calculus described how quantities in a system varied with respect to each other, such as the flow of heat through a solid, which is why he used the name fluxions. Leibniz’s calling it calculus is, perhaps, a bit more general.

            Newton would, perhaps, have been the most interesting scientist to meet, considering his work. He was, however, eccentric and he sometimes butted heads with people. His disputes with Sir Robert Hooke are well-known.

            He attributed his discoveries to having been well-grounded in the work of his predecessors, “standing on the shoulders of giants” as he once said. I think he would be quite astonished how much science and technology was made possible because of what he had done, such as spaceflight. However, I’m sure that if he hadn’t existed, someone else would have eventually accomplished what he did, though it might have taken a while longer.

    2. Although not officially a country, the “Quebecois” nation (which the Parliament of Canada voted in favour of), may rank second to Japan.
      Other good candidates: Poland, Hungary, Finland, the Czech Republic, Estonia and possible Switzerland. Not sure about Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Croatia, but they are too small to matter. Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Belarus also will be keeping their cultures, but they are not advanced nations.
