    1. Blah. I got a telephone survey yesterday asking my opinion about various things Calgary city council is doing/spending priorities. I wish I had known about this when I gave those responses. The main thing they were asking about was whether we spend much time and money in the core, and how they could make it more attractive. Parking and the associated costs of it wasn’t an option on their list. Being frugal was, and I said it was damned important.

      On the “bright” side, my property taxes are going down. The number of “for sale” signs in my neighbourhood is increasing. Related?

        1. I had similar fun and games with the house I inherited.

          When I sell it, I need to give a fair market value when I acquired it so that I can properly declare it on my income tax form. I hired a professional appraiser and, after she looked around, she wrote a report and came up with a value. Interestingly enough, when I was preparing to file for probate on my father’s will, a realtor came by, took a glance, and arrived at an estimate a bit higher than hers, so I have 2 independent sources of information for what the house is actually worth.

          It turns out that B. C. Assessment figures it’s worth at least 20% more, based on what similar houses and lots are sold for in the town. That’s it–no other logic or rationale behind it. Nobody from the provincial government came to look the place over.

          And then there’s what silly hall figures what my house is worth. Guess which value my property tax is based on? Then again, it’s B. C., the province where logic goes to die.

  13. I noticed in the throne speech that Blackie hasn’t given details yet on sending everyone to camp this coming summer. He will probably have to set up a whole new ministry. The Department Of Camping. Blackie’s CBC had its “At Issue” panel praise the throne speech. The Unifor jounalists explained that everything about it was wonderful. More global warming taxes and money for indians is just what Canada needs. And they explained that no outreach to the West in the speech is great, because they have the support of the Bloc in Quebec. Teachers in Toronto are taking a taxpayer funded PA day today, and will be attending a conference on how evil Doug Ford is.   19. OK calling on the brain bank here. Anyone come across any info breaking down how carbon tax inflates food prices in Canada and Alberta in particular? All I can find is info from the Gubmint who is imposing the tax on everything. And Universities of No Larning who also think Carbon Taxes are a good. I may be wrong but I think the Carbon Tax is like a super GST. They finally found another way to tax food.

    2. Not quite, a GST is charged on imports and rebated for exports, meaning they actually help Canadian producers in the world market.
      The carbon tax is charged only on things that occur in Canada, having the same trade effect as if the rest of the world placed tarrifs on Canadian goods, while also in effect subsidiziing imports from foreign countries where the carbon tax has not been built into the price of their goods.

      I wonder if we could place an estimated carbon tax on foreign goods that includes the upstream emissions. Things like Saudi Oil and manufactured goods from Asia. I hear processing of chinesium is very energy intensive.

It is a tragic story but has for many years now been exploited for political purposes and is used to promote feminist messages which do not resonate as they once did. I cringe every time the story gets covered yet again by the media. I don’t mean to belttle the story, but what is to be gained by having to revisit the event again and again? Lepine (or whatever his other name is) was a sick individual. I really do not think it speaks to contemporary Canada.

  42. Stompin’ Tom Connors life story is an enjoyable read. He had a tough early life. His story would make you shed a few tears. However, he persevered despite many roadblocks. One was when he was told that he was no good as a singer, not what people wanted to listen to and that his music would never sell. Undaunted, he self recorded, went on the road and sold his own recordings. Eventually he had a following and people bought his records where they saw him play. He and the band often worked for a few meals and a few rooms. They lived that way from town to town. Eventually they became a great success.

    He received the nickname “Stompin’ Tom” when Boyd MacDonald, a waiter at the King George Tavern introduced him as “Stompin’ Tom Connors” because he used to stomp the heel of his left boot to keep rhythm during his songs. Eventually he’d travel with his own piece of plywood to stomp on because he’d wear out the floor of any stage if he appeared there long enough. It became his signature piece.     Pharmacare,Visioncare and more “help” by our blessed government.
    It occurs to me that not one of those MPs(Including the socalled conservatives) has even considered the simple logic.
    If they were not stealing so much, we could afford our own glasses,drugs and healthcare.
    In fact without their “help” most of those services would be both affordable and available.
    Just as without their help with planning my retirement pension,I would be a lot richer now.
