    Today we face another threat, perhaps even more subversive. This one is to the very idea of truth itself.

    In the United States, it began as a calculated assault on our profession, though it hasn’t ended there. It has gone on for more than four years now: during presidential primaries, a general election and past the halfway mark of a presidency.

    First there was an effort to marginalize the press and then to delegitimize us.

    Then there was a campaign to dehumanize us as disgusting and scum and garbage and the lowest form of life. Ultimately, we were depicted as “fake news,” “enemies of the people,” a “stain” on the country, traitors.

    There is no mystery as to why this is happening. It is a cynical strategy to disqualify the press as an independent arbiter of fact.

    3. I think the news media is undermining itself with all the un-objective, one sided coverage of Trump. Many times I would hear Trump say something, then turn to the news only to find that the media was putting forward an interpretation very different from what I understood him to mean. That is a central reason why many people agree when Trump calls out fake news. The Washington Post is one of the big culprits. I wonder why they were chosen for the special award. Much of the criticisms of institutions is also legitimate, as examples have emerged that some institutions are deliberately engaged in undermining democracy and truth. Courts, security agencies, science, etc. — in many instances have become political. Yes, scary, but it is foolish to believe losing faith in the press is solely caused by Trump. Too many people see what he sees — media/institutional deception and manipulation.

      Things are finally starting to move on the Western Separation front, this feels like a watershed event. Let the ingrates in the RoC reelect the Libs and see what happens. End result: a free Alberta and the end of equalization forever.

        To begin, AB, like QC, could simply decide to collect its provincial income taxes and pensions without feds’ “permission.”
        Then the feds would have to equalize on other taxpayers’ dime. The other provincial dominos would surely fall from there.
        Just like that moronic federal carbon tax, where big polluters pass the bill to consumers, an indulgence to pollute.
        Obviously that’s good for the environment eh? Then again the capacity for human stupidity and naivety is infinite.
