Since many foreign university students are coming from the PRC, and a lot of those are from well-off families, I’ve often wondered how they managed to qualify for admission. I get the imprssion that lots of them are nowhere near as good as the students from Hong Kong that I knew of while I was an undergrad more than 40 years ago.
they pay full freight, likely in cash, and for residence, which is advantageous for the schools.
If you have a choice between taking a student that pays the full rate, versus the student who pays the government approved rate, plus government subsidy, which do you expect is more?
I figured that $$$ had a lot to do with it. We’ve got a lot of young foreigners in my apartment complex now. I suspect that many of them are university students since we’re located a few minutes drive from the U of A.
There were rumours that one reason so many of them now live there is because the management prefers them because figures it can charge them more. And they’re not poor. I now have a pretty good chance of being run over in my parkade by someone driving an Acura, a Lexus, or a Beamer. A decade ago, there were hardly any foreigners and there were hardly any of the fancier cars in the parking stalls.
Someone needs to check their privilege.
So THAT’S how Cordell Broadus … progeny of baby-daddy Snoop Dog … was admitted to UCLA. Hint: I don’t know how many 4-star HS recruits never play a down of college football. In fact, virtually ALL 4-star recruits become STARTERS by the end of their First year in college ball. That’s WHY they’re 4-Star recruits … they’re THAT GOOD. Cordell? Not so much. I smell FRAUD.
Uhm … yeaaaahhhhhh … Cordell suddenly discovered his “life wasn’t all about football”. More like he was a 1-star recruit fraudulently hyped to 4-star status. Hmmmmm ? Or … there was drug-testing involved.
Lest you scream RACIST !!! at me … I will tell you how many PROPS I give to REAL college athletes … such as …
Verner received his UCLA DEGREE in Math/Applied Science at the same time as my own son … AND … he was an NFL Draft choice and played for several years. Uh, yeah … THAT is what’s called a college STUDENT-athlete. The kid’s bright as hell, and a LEGIT hell of an athlete. As opposed to some dope-smoking progeny of some ollllld rap star … and fledgling disciple of Martha Stewart
Anddddd uhhhh yeahhhhhh … Verner was only a 3-star recruit. Cause he didn’t PAY $$$ for his college admission
Hey kenji,
Great to see you give props to a Bruin. When I went there (before they discovered fire according to my children) we had an All American end, at a time you had to play both sides of the ball, who majored in physics, and was on the Dean’s honor roll. His name is Dick Wallen.
Back then, he wasn’t all that rare. Our first Final Four team had a starter who wrote classical epic poetry (iambic pentameter) chronicling the team’s adventure, who later became vice chancellor at UCLA. Another became Dean of the law school. A third became a head coach and athletic director. A fourth actually had an NBA career and came back to coach, even though that was a forgettable part of his career.
… and then there’s Bill Walton … who left UCLA only to endorse the “struggle” of Field Marshal Cinque (Donald DeFreeze) and the SLA who kidnapped Patty Hearst and died in a hail of bullets and fire in LA
bill walton was very close to a writer named jack scott. they spent a considerable amount of time together. jack scott harbored sla members at a farm in pennsylvania, including patty hearst. he and his wife helped them escape, (he actually drove them personally) from from california to pennsylavnia after the killings (justifiable) of six SLA members in Los Angeles by the police. bill walton provided money and support to this effort. look it up, it is a story that needs to be fully examined. question: why is bill walton a free man?
Hearing Bill Walton’s voice doing “color” broadcasts of PAC-12 bb games annoys the hell out me. Hearing him regale the audience with his stories of traveling the country as a Deadhead, and talking about the “glory days” of Telegraph Ave (like when protestors bombed the BofA branch) doesn’t have a lot to do with the game I’m watching. I always turn down the sound when he’s on. And I agree with the comment above … why isn’t Walton in JAIL!?
The early 70’s … that’s when Fire was invented … No?
A great majority of the UCLA fans turn off the sound when Walton does the “color commentary”. I would admit that most of them are not so much turned off by his politics but by his touting the U of A(rizona) against the Bruins.
No, fire was invented just after 1962.
You are my elder by a good decade+ … and I bow to your wisdom acquired with that time. And I admire the hell out of your formative era in American History … As a young child of 7-years old in ’62 I can still SEE, HEAR, and SMELL the wonders of those days. Beers requiring church keys to open … and whatnot. By the time I got to college, 24-packs of Lucky Lager were all equipped with screw-top bottles for ease of drunken consumption. Thank you for such useful inventions!
so those celebrities that tell us Trump is a liar and is only succesful because he cheated, they are are liars who only succeeded ( or their kids did ) because they bribed people
I am so not surprised, I did not even blink when I read this news.
I wonder if Michael Moore will make one of his documentaries about this.
It now makes sense how Trudeau became a drama teacher
“Hollywood stars Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin”.
I must have slept through their performances – never heard of either one.
