And here in dear of Edmonton the city is pushing ahead with a train that is costing almost 1/2 a million dollars a meter so that in the not too distant future they will be in position to ban private vehicles and the sheeple say oh look a train to Millwoods.
I agree. The Mill Woods LRT extension has been, if you pardon the pun, a train wreck. I’ve driven through part of the construction zones in SE Edmonton. It’s going to take years before it’s finished.
That wouldn’t surprise me. The original LRT was built for the Commonwealth Games in 1978. The extension across the river from downtown to the U of A campus went into service in 1992, I believe. It wasn’t until 15 years later that one could catch the train at the university farm and 3 or 4 more before one could go all the way to Century Park.
Despite its many shortcomings, the LRT makes it easier for students to come up from the south part of the city and go to the U of A. It also makes commuting to downtown a breeze–no traffic tie-ups or parking to worry about.
That schedule, though, is glacial compared with what happened with Calgary’s C-train. I moved to Vancouver just when construction started in 1979. A decade later, I could take the train from my old neighbourhood in Marlborough to downtown.
