Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Trump The Establishment
As many have said, including the great man himself, the US holds the cards in many of these matters.
I love the way Trump has tied tariffs into NATO..and he’s right again as usual
A couple of comments:
1) These data should be made available by the mainstream media for all Canadians to see. But they won’t because they prove Trump is right;
2) Canadians fought and died in liberating the Netherlands and Belgium in WW2. They also fought and died in Italy overthrowing the fascists and German occupiers. All three of those countries are currently spending a smaller percentage of their GDP on defence than does Canada. As members of NATO, Canada is committed to defending those countries. Why isn’t Trudeau telling them to increase their defence spending?
….he doesn’t do math
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-latvia-visit-nato-1.4740098
The figures were made available, on several stories I checked yesterday, even at CBC see above.
UK clearly meets the guidelines and is 2nd to US in real dollars expended. UK is trying to exit from the EU a goal Trump presumably supports yet he was very disparaging of PM May on the eve of his visit there. What did she do to displease him?
Ms May has hogtied the UK to the EU with a “soft-Brexit” proposal which will make other trade deals almost impossible.

Because his father remained in Canada while actual Canadians bled the fields for European freedom.
And he’s stupid.
Trump says “increase your defence spending”
Juthtin says “yes Mr Trump”
Juthtins supporters say “WTF just happened?”
Small correction:
Trump says “increase your defence spending bitch”
With the economy growing “from the heart out” our GDP should shrink to the point where our military expenditures will exceed 2% shortly.
My thoughts exactly..ore then one way to make it to 2%…just add carbon taxes, never ending deficits…we might beat the US if our GDP tanks
Brilliant!…unintended consequences of Justupid’s fecklessness.
Pat…bang!!!!
Brilliant!
Flag-on-the-play – the above graphic suggests Canada is spending 1.3 percent of its GDP on defense, but this is the only time I’ve ever seen it as any higher than 1.0 percent.
And with a federal election in the offing and votes to buy, Shiny isn’t likely to increase it anytime soon…
If you rank by % of GDP, Canada is in a 3-way tie for 13th. Nothing to brag about.
That’s if my morning coffee has kicked in properly.
Both logic and history dictate that any country not prepared to defend it’s soveregnty won’t last for long. Too many leftist governments are currently focused on social engineering and erasing borders to bother defending them. NATO is full of these types of countries.
The inappropriate responsibility the US has been burdened with in funding the defense of people unwilling to make the sacrifices to properly defend themselves kinda reminds me of that classic old parable, ‘The Ant and the Grasshopper’.
Let me emphasize that those are MY hard earned TAX dollars being … leveraged … by every other member of NATO
On defense, we’re pathetic and have always gotten away with it.
NATO is the political shell of a cold war military alliance. Go with NORAD, ditch NATO.
Worried about Russia? Stop sucking of their energy teat Germany.
Military doctrine is changing at a breathtaking pace, with special forces and drones but a miniscule part of this revolution.
The members themselves are better educated and more technically savvy than my generation (joined 1978) with our understanding of NATO confined to swan postings to Lahr or peacekeeping larks towards the end of the Cyprus mission.
Peace was kept through deterrence. Nobody fired a shot. Well almost nobody.
That still works. Trump just wants people to contribute to the US pot if it dips into it.
Reciprocity (as in trade) and deterrence with forces used for direct threats, building or existing, anywhere.
No invasion; black ops, you’re dead. Gotta go. Europe, if you want ME oil, you will have to fight for it.
I like VDH wonder why the international intellect insurgency don’t get it. Imho, they get, but it doesn’t matter to them.

Is this charting overall military spending or military spending towards NATO-initiatives? It may not make a difference to the order, but it is an important distinction.
all….but they are the same according to the agreement
Ranking as percentage of GDP:
1. USA 3.6% Far and away the most in both dollar value and %. The % is double or more than all but 7 other members.
2. Greece 2.4% Perhaps that has to do with the fact that she finds Albania and Montenegro on her northern border.
3. UK 2.1% Traditional and faithful ally since 1812.
3. Estonia 2.1% **
5. Poland 2.0% **
6. Romania 1.8% **
6. Latvia 1.8% **
6. France 1.8% Actually foreign occupied as late as 19458.
9. Lithuania 1.7 **
The U.S. aside, UK and France for no other apparent reason than support. But they have been steadfast allies through two world wars. Greece probably has her own reasons for maintaining a military presence, as I noted.
The other 5 in the top 10, out of 27 NATO members, are noted with **. Besides being in the NATO, they share one other thing in common. They all have common borders with Russia, Belarus or Ukraine, and Russia has heavy armed presence in the other two. Only other NATO members Slovakia and Hungary have common borders with Ukraine, and that via a very short border of maybe 70 miles each.
Is there any doubt whom the NATO members consider the greatest threat? But even so, they still expect the U.S. to do the heavy lifting. Slovakia and Hungary, especially, for all the tough talking (which I do appreciate), only spend 1.2% or less on the military.
For Slovakia, which is a relatively poor country, that’s probably a fair burden on the economy. And they do have the Air Force stationed very close to the Ukrane, near Kosice.
OldBruin, these number dumps are dishonest at best, and mostly just bull$hit. Some of the smaller countries spend more of their GDP because of the small size of their economy. So their contribution is actually much more significant by comparison, but insignificant by dollars. They deserve support more so than Germany who has the 4th largest economy on the world stage. If people don’t like them to have too large a military because of past history, let them help the smaller countries with financial contributions. And Italy with the 8th largest economy has no bludy excuse for being laggard’s.
The numbers I quoted are percentage of GDP, and not dollar spent. Other smaller country members, not so close to Russia, spend a lot less, as percentages of GDP. They noticeably include Belgium, the seat of the EU.
Bruin generally correct plus the point NME made above. Greece has the level of military spending not because of Montenegro or ALbania but because of Turkey.
Canada spends a lot of that money on useless, fat brassholes who stand down every Friday at about 10 am.
I don’t believe the gov’t of Canada will add $12 billion to the military budget in Canada anytime soon. Keep in mind that this is every year, not only 2018.
They could reallocate from the CBC or equalisation / interprovincial welfare program, but Quebec would cry. A lot. Quebec and the Atlantic provinces would likely equate this with being anally raped. And the foreign aid program should likely be gutted in its entirety.
All of which is golden to me. I think 4% would be easy for any PM to make, if the PM had a spine.
“if” …
Wonky things the Canadian military has done (including but not limited to):
1. distribute food aid to starving Somalis
2. disaster relief in Sri Lanka after tsunami
3. bomb Libya
What do these actions have to do with defending Canada?
On another thread I asked a question and await an answer. Can you show me the phrase misuse of the military on a conservative blog?
You did get an answer in another thread. At the risk of repeating myself, your disagreement with missions like distributing food aid to Somalis, disaster relief in Sri Lanka and bombing Libya does not constitute ipso facto “misuse of the military”.
It merely represents your opinion.
Next question!
I’ll take a stab at an answer … ALL of those things were done in obedience to The Clinton Foundation?
Ding!
+3
You are correct to a degree. Helping Somalia or Sri LAnka is an utter waste of taxpayer’s resources. As for bombing Libya matters are more complicated. As long Libya or any other such $hithole is bombed for reason other than trying to help them I have no problem with that. Bombing them to put our sonofabitch on the throne, or for target practice, or just to emphasize that we can, or just for fun I a ok with me.
None of it of course means that Canada should not be increasing our military expenditure. The civilized world needs strong military to make sure that turd worlders do not dream of challenging us and to impose our will on them when as we please. The mistakes made by the west in allowing enemies to survive hunt us decades later as do the mistakes of allowing turd worlders to make decisions.
hey Rizball. These “exercises” yer humping off at the gums about, keep our military in readiness” to a certain degree. This is so physically, mechanically, and logistically. You do know that militaries use paintballing as an exercise to ready for combat deployment , don’t cha. Not all thing are as they seem. You should really stick to reading, as your bullshgit questions aren’t even entertaining, they are just bullshit!!
BTW
God Bless Poland.
The US should pull all it’s 5h1t from Germany and set it all back up there in accordance with the “Kielbasa Accord” which I am currently drafting to include Ukraine as member #30.
Ukraine will unfortunately not be accepted into NATO for as long as they have a territorial dispute with Putinistan. That is why Siberian Mongols occupy parts of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.
The libranos hate the military. Always have always will. I don’t believe their numbers for a second.
I haven’t forgotten how da liddel thief treated the Airborne in the Somalia (1993) mission. He disbanded them. Relentlessly pursued Private Kyle Brown culminating in his conviction in military court which resulted in Brown serving 40 months in a military prison. Military time is not the club med time criminals do in the federal pen.
So, bongo is full-or-shit on this file. Nothing he says can be relied on. He’s bullshitting.
Fortunately Trump knows this and once the NATO panty wastes get spending up to the 2% threshold Trump will raise the bar to 3% and perhaps higher.
