Same thing that killed North American manufacturing and made General Motors into Government Motors.

One reason why so much SF and paranormal stuff is shot here is that the union rules are different about shooting at night. In the US, you basically can’t thanks to the union rules about working hours, so they film in the early morning and slap a blue filter on the camera, which looks ridiculous. In Canada, they have to pay time and a half, but you can shoot in the evening and then go down the pub.
