  1. …and Hollywood wants to go on a protest strike. Fill your boots, boys and girls. Soon, walking the streets is all you’ll have.

  2. I contend that the bleatings of those actors and actresses at the various self-congratulatory shows – e.g., Meryl Streep – are the sound of an industry desperate to keep itself not only relevant but even just alive.

  3. Mr. Bilton, the author of the piece, is oblivious to the downside of all his prognostications. Not that I really care about the future of Hollywood, I don’t, but to me, it is a bleak and cold future that he predicts. Totally artificial, lonely, inhuman even. I hope I’m wrong.

  4. “…a bleak and cold future that he predicts. Totally artificial, lonely, inhuman even. …”
That will get solved when it’s enough of a problem. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the cheerful part of that article.

  5. As long as the industry attracts hordes of physically very attractive young people willing to do anything for a job, the good ol’ boys will keep it running at a loss. Pussy is a major commodity.

  6. The Media & human behavior has a common thread. In the early 80’s NBC/Network News was film on film. When any department had a useless hair ball they were transferred to a NEW (mickey mouse) group called ENG (Electronic News Gathering) such that they would fade away…It was the Film that faded away and then those hairballs caused all kinds of problems.
MSNBC was another home for flat-liners.. Name one person that moved from MSNBC News into real NBC News.. Tinge up the Leg was a Network reject..still is.. But another Generation will exist that will eclipse the Networks
The Hollywood Political Types should expect a 50% loss of wealth… Hanoi Jane only got roles because her Father (Henry Fonda) was very popular & well liked.. To be a Nasty person will only make a 2018 political add, or be a Camp follower on the History Channel of the Vikings.

  7. “Totally artificial, lonely, inhuman even. I hope I’m wrong.”
No worries. He’s completely wrong. Machine learning can’t do what he suggests. It can do a lot, let’s not pretend otherwise, but it can’t do that.
What is virtually certain is that movie making, like every other thing in the USA, will be off-shored to China. Because the Chicoms do not countenance 200 people standing around a set that could be manned by 20 hard workers.
That’s the real reason they’re freaking out about that movie Great Wall with Mark Wahlbergh as the star. The SJWs are pretending its all about racism, casting a White dude in a Chinese movie. But really what it is about is unions. There were no union schleps paid to drink coffee in that movie.
That is another reason why so much American TV is shot in Canada these days. Here we have unions, for sure, but in Hollywood they have UNIONS. Down there it take three guys to change a lightbulb. One Laborer to carry the ladder, one Laborer to carry the lightbulb, and a union electrician to climb up and screw it in. Same thing that killed North American manufacturing and made General Motors into Government Motors.
The fireworks haven’t even started yet. Wait until Trump deals with the downside of keepong plants in the USA: unions. I’ve got a whole big bag of popcorn lined up for that show. Trump vs. Teacher’s Union: must see TV!

  8. One reason why so much SF and paranormal stuff is shot here is that the union rules are different about shooting at night. In the US, you basically can’t thanks to the union rules about working hours, so they film in the early morning and slap a blue filter on the camera, which looks ridiculous. In Canada, they have to pay time and a half, but you can shoot in the evening and then go down the pub.

  9. In the future, the only star will be the playwright.
Even that can be done by computer, at least to a certain extent nowadays. Let AI advance a bit more, and let the machines learn some rules of grammar and composition, and they’ll be writing the scripts themselves.
Considering the rubbish Hollywood’s been producing for the last 20 years, that might be an improvement.

  10. Human porn stars will be replaced by ‘virtual actors’ in the future as viewers choose polygons over people
Noel Coward, in this hilarious arrangement of the famous Cole Porter song, hinted at that:

The reference appears around the 3:00 mark.

  11. with China’s new super super chip, they will be able to do that a lot sooner than you think. This new chip is so fast that it will take the Japanes and Americans years to catch up. And one they use these super fast chips to jump from binary to trinary , the real fun begins!!!

  12. Well there is the GIGO problem. After all, the last general American election indicates an unbridgeable gulf between what the public wants to buy, and what the bubble encapsulated elites are selling.
I’d don’t claim to be abreast of pop culture, I cut my TV feed off in May 2000.
We just weren’t watching and it was a waste of money to pay for it.
However, I do surf the net and Hollywood seems to be turning out a plethora of expensive clunkers in the last few years.
If they’re the ones who are trying to teach AI to playwright winners, they are putting garbage into the machine ’cause they have lost their own souls.
These people are so estranged from common human interest, it’s almost as though they’re space aliens and don’t understand the human condition at all.
