“The truth is Polly Dunning is the epitome of the third form of fake news – “The Failed Millennial Leftist Diary.” Merely one of millions of failed leftist millennials who cannot accept that, even with their precious liberal arts degrees, they are common, boring, and offer nothing of value to the world. Since they cannot accept this and their ego must be satiated, they go to the internet to journal about their “heroic journey” or “struggle” where they find other sympathetic, self-commiserating failed millennial leftists. But mere commiseration is not enough, so they resort to increasing levels of sensationalism, brown journalism, and radical story telling to get validation in the form of traffic and likes. Some, like Polly, get lucky and have one article go viral for 15 minutes of internet fame. Some get REALLY lucky and get an unpaid job at the Huffington Post. But they never get more followers, subscribers, or notoriety than a Bernard Chapin, a Stacy McCain, or even myself because their stories and they themselves are unmentionably common.”

Leftist millennial after receiving her degree: “I’m too smart to have been conned. They told me.”
Something tells me that I’m hearing this laughing all the way to the bank and it ain’t the students who are laughing.
Received this in my mail this morning and I think it is worth posting here.

To all the readers and commentators at SDA a very Happy New Year, roll on 2017 and the 21st. of January!
This reminds me of some of the students I had to deal with while I taught at a post-secondary institution. If I had a dime for each time I heard “It’s not fair!” or variations thereof, I’d be in a much higher tax bracket right now.
One incident during my last year of teaching illustrates this point.
In a service course that I taught, I gave an exam or quiz one day and there were a few who left well before time ran out. Just before the deadline, the majority of the students were still writing, so I gave them a few minutes to finish. Sometimes an exam or quiz takes a bit longer to complete, so I decided to cut them some slack.
It didn’t take long before some of those who left early came back to mewl, puke, and generally be a nuisance. There lots of protests about fairness and why those who stayed to the end got more time and they didn’t. (Uh, maybe because you left early? Nah–I was simply being a meanie to you personally.)
Nope, it was my fault that they decided to leave early when, had they stayed to the end, they could have taken advantage of my generosity. Taking responsibility for their decision was something that didn’t seem to occur to them. (Guess whose side their department head took? Yup….)
That was over 15 years ago. The younger students would now be in their mid-30s and some of them are likely parents. I shudder to think what sort of snowflakery that they’ll be teaching to their children.
Life is Not Fair, it’s Hard; Adapt or Die.
My generation was raised by those who survived the Depression and Ww2.
The current mid20s generation was raised by yuppies and pampered underachievers. The results are not in the least bit surprising.
So did my parents. I learned to take responsibility for my actions and to be prepared for the consequences.
Most of millennials I’ve dealt with, starting with my students, seem completely oblivious to that sort of thing.
B Deplorable, that is the big reason I quit being a prof, and went into investment banking. Whiny, pathetic “students”… That and quintupling my take-home…
Even some of the alleged better TV programming has gotten so violent and graphic … that even my jaded sensibilities cannot tolerate it at that level. It’s gratuitous and idiotic. We don’t need to see someones head being bashed in by a psychopath and that sort of stuff. And the gratuitous sex is border line porn anymore. Compared to mainstream TV, Twitter is like going to church.
That’s why I stopped teaching to classrooms of children of all ages who were only there because their parents told them to. I focused instead on adult-ed in the trades, and found it much more rewarding when the students actually wanted to learn new skills. We can lead people to knowledge, but we can’t make them think.
Connect your flatscreenTV to your computer and select what you watch, on your schedule, and without ads. Broadcast/cable TV is for people who need laugh tracks on what they watch.
Even some of the alleged better TV programming has gotten so violent and graphic
That’s one reason I rarely watch commercial TV now. My channels are Turner Classic Movies, Encore Avenue, AMC (Better Call Saul has to be one of the best shows being produced right now), and, once in a while, PBS.
Beyond that, I don’t even bother any more.
One thing I found was that childish behaviour knew no age. Some of my most worst-behaved or ill-disciplined students were about as old as I was. At many of the places I worked at in industry, that kind of conduct usually resulted in someone receiving a pink slip.
But, like you wrote, one can lead people to knowledge, but one can’t make them think.
My New Year’s resolution is to stay away from CBC, CTV and other mainstream media TV news sources that are simply the propaganda machine for Trudebt and company. Enough is enough!!
“If people in the media cannot decide whether they are in the business of reporting news or manufacturing propaganda, it is all the more important that the public understand that difference and choose their news sources accordingly.”
— Thomas Sowell
Oh c’mon folks SDA is full of cbc fans. They claim they are deniers but quote at length from tv and radio not unlike the ‘friends’ of cbc themselves.
That might be a place to start a resolution. Quit listening/watching. Seek help.
Happy new year to all.
ABTrapper, you might want to resolve to taking a tire iron to your tongue. It seems to be stuck to your cheek….
