Fascinating question.
A Post Secondary admissions person I know was intrigued by the opportunity for an applicant to self-declare his/her ‘aboriginal status’ and various other ‘special target’ categories when applying for entry to college.
It makes one wonder if we all should not just ‘self-declare’ as aboriginal. After all aren’t we all aborigines? We are indigenous to somewhere, aren’t we? If we all recognize our aboriginal status then we would all be entitled to the same benefits doled out by our governments. This sounds pretty whacky perhaps but I’m told that the Federal government allowed self identification of aboriginal status in NFL and now more than 2 in 10 Newfies have self declared. Not sure of the veracity of that statement but if true it seems to provide a path out of that particular identity disparity.

Apparently, an East Central Alberta church sponsored a Syrian family only to find out that the husband was a wife beater. Neither he, nor his family, could understand his need to follow a Canadian ‘value’ when disciplining his family. As a result the wife and kids have returned to Syria but he remains. Perhaps to face charges, I don’t know. Assuming this was a Christian Syrian family it underscores that the refugee problems will not be just religious but also cultural.
