    “Possession, use, or threatened use of firearms (including but not limited to BB guns, air guns, water pistols, and paint guns) ammunition, explosives, dangerous chemicals, or any other objects as weapons on college property, except as expressly authorized by law or college regulations, is prohibited,” the college’s security policy states.

    The latest FBI stats on violent crime/murder show that –
    1) Knives kill 5 times more than guns -The new crime statistics released by the agency reveal that out of 11,961 murders performed within the U.S. in 2014, 660 were committed unarmed, 1,567 were committed with knives and only 248 murders were known to have been committed using rifles of any type, including single-shot long arms
    2) “assault weapons” are not the choice of criminals and represent less than 1% of gun crime -That isn’t that surprising considering the recent study by the University of Chicago Crime Lab which revealed that AR-15s and AK-47s are unpopular amongst criminals.
    3) Deer kill 1000 times as many people as mass shooters – There are about 1.5 million deer/vehicle collisions annually, resulting in 29,000 human injuries and fatalities Deer also carry the ticks that transmit Lyme disease to about 13,000 people each year.
    4) your chances of being shot by a mass killer/terrorist is about the same odds as being hit by lightning. 24,000 people are killed by lightning each year, 8,583 are killed by guns
    5) Gun crimes have decreased every year this decade -“…The 2014 estimated violent crime total was 6.9 percent below the 2010 level and 16.2 percent below the 2005 level,” the FBI stated.

  13. Police have now announced the shooter was dispatched during exchange of gun fire with police – so the early reports he was in custody were wrong.
    The shooter did not survive to answer a first person motive statement.

  16. I gotta take exception to your statement #1: “knives kill 5 times more than guns”. Adding up the columns, I get: Total Murders: 11961, Total firearms: 8124, Handguns: 5562, Rifles: 248, shotguns: 262, Firearms (type unknown): 2052, Knives or cutting instruments: 1567, Other weapons: 1610, Hands, fists, feet, etc. (incl. pushed): 660.
    I know this is “picking nits”, but:
    First, we aren’t told how many of the category “knives or cutting instruments” are actually knives and not cleavers, or “box cutters”, or axes, hatchets etc. (those are cutting instruments aren’t they?), or what about chain saws? Are they considered “cutting instruments” or “other weapons”? A chainsaw can be pretty dangerous, but it doesn’t fit my idea of a weapon when it’s used for its intended purpose. Does it mysteriously become a “weapon” only when it is used for murder and mayhem? (sorry – just having fun)
    Second: the number 248 is the total of Category “rifles”, which is a very small fraction of “guns” if you mean “all firearms”.
    So, in my opinion, the statement should read “knives kill one fifth as much as guns (1567 / 8124).

  19. I was going to say something similar Christian, the way he broke it down after giving the link wasn’t really helpful. I would have went along the lines that excluding handguns you are 3x times more likely to be murdered by a person using something other than a firearm. If you could actually remove all access to handguns, I’d bet the total number of murders would not drop much and the vast majority of the murders from the handgun category would move to the non firearm category rather than the rifle or shotgun category. Bottom line, banning guns won’t change the murder rate much at all, but just about everyone on this site already understands that.

    So, if it turns out, per impossible, that the shooter’s an islamic jihadist, we can all rest assured that he only thinks he is. And, the islamic scholar in chief, who moonlights as a psychiatrist, has handed him an excuse: mental illness. Nice goin’, champ.
    Oh, and, of course, the solution is more gun control, since we obviously don’t have enough gun free zones. Imbecile!

    The new crime statistics released by the agency reveal that out of 11,961 murders performed within the U.S. in 2014, 660 were committed unarmed, 1,567 were committed with knives and only 248 murders were known to have been committed using rifles of any type, including single-shot long arms and “assault rifles”
    In other words, despite the calls to ban “military-style assault rifles” by anti-gun groups, much less than four percent of murders were committed using AR-15s, AK-47s and other semi-automatic long arms.
    My motive was to disintegrate the gun haters phobic narrative that “assault rifles” are so inherently deadly they need to be banned – as you can see even with misnamed “assault” rifles lumped into the long gun murder category ,the stat does not justify the paranoia. Remember these are US stats which encompass such gun free murder pits as Washington DC, Chicago, LA, Philly and Baltimore – Canada can’t come close to these numbers making the per capita risks of long gun crime victimization infinitely less here. Civilian owned military styled auto-loading rifles may look like their full auto counter part but the civilian semi auto versions are more accurate, have no fast fire capability and are way too expensive for the neighborhood hoodlum or Jihadi to afford.
    In the US Handguns (older big bore revolvers) lead as weapon of choice for criminals – they are easy to conceal and because hand guns are a durable item, there is a vast black market of handguns which has recirculated within the crime community since the 60s and 70s when B&E gun thefts peaked – the portion of these “crime guns” which were ever registered or legally purchased is less than 5o% – which makes sense because the biggest industry in the “hood” is selling used crime guns and renting a handgun to a perp for a few hours – so one handgun recovered at the scene of a crime from a dead perp was probably stolen decades before and may have been responsible for several murders.
    Canada has had restricted sales of Handguns since the 1930s – only screened target shooters or registered collectors can purchase/own them and they can only carry them to and from the gun range they belong to – no defensive carry permits in Canada.
    OTOH the US has handgun carry permits in most states and civilian owned handguns (a defensive arm by nature) use their guns 1.5 million times a year to prevent criminal attack with an astonishing rate of only 8% ever having to shoot the perp. So the 300 million guns which are owned by good Americans are responsible for saving many more lives than the illegal firearms of bad guys take.
    All these stats are verifiable through either US law enforcement stats or criminologists like Klek, Lott and Mauser

    I would take to task his argument here too. Of course if you count all the inner city murders of blacks on blacks which Baraq never wants to talk about added to the mass shootings of this sort, he might have a point. But Baraq does not count the BoB carnage IMO. Disturbed whiteys account for most all of the “No gun zone” shootings and thats what he want to compare with terrorism deaths.
    I would think that 9/11 with over 3000 dead would be my timeline to start at. Add the Boston bombing and the Military base with the crazy Muslim doctor me thinks Hussein is full of it again.

    According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are about 1 million car accidents with deer each year that kill 200 Americans, cause more than 10,000 personal injuries. Deer also spread the Lyme disease tic infecting 1600 Americans yearly
    Do some research and stop being such a reactionary fool.

    Now, shooter is dead and we still don’t have a name, a picture, a background. He can’t be white IMO, we would have his entire life already with a link to Ancestry.com.

    Mass killings are rarely carried out with knives. Or worst yet, ”deer kill 1000 times as many people as mass shooters.” Deer don’t go to schools to kill kids! And what have deer to do with this story, really??
    The point is that another 10 people are dead, another 9 are seriously injured. Another important point is that terrorists entering schools and killing innocent students with firearms have become a reoccurring event in the USA. And my final point is that I live in Canada, and I don’t want to see this country turn into a shit hole like the United States of America because people are addicted to violence and firearms. Enough said!

    ‘People like him have nothing to live for’: College gunman praised Vester Flanagan, shared a Sandy Hook documentary online three days before shooting spree and was looking for love on dating site.
    He wrote that he was looking for love, but interested only in someone who ‘shares my beliefs and is similar to me’
    He described himself as ‘shy at first, but warm up quickly’, adding that he is an ‘introvert’ and ‘not religious’

I’m also sure that the law enforcement community across North America will sleep much better tonight knowing that the killer was a law abiding citizen who had complied to federal, state and municipal gun legislation in that great nation know as the USA!!

    I fail to see your reasoning! Deer don’t kill motorists or spread Lyme disease intentionally.
    And while I realize that the name of the killer and the status of his weapons was (most likely) not made public at the time you posted your comments, this story is about a person who killed 10 people, injured another 9, with what are (most likely) weapons that were obtained legally. I fail to see what deer and ticks have to do with any of this.
    I’m a old retired guy. I live in a small community that has more than enough Mounties to protect me. To those people however who live in a city and have small children in school or older kids in college, this is a troubling event. And I’m sure whether or not the weapons were legal, they want to see an end to this insanity, as most Americans would.

Had the campus allowed lawful concealed carry for students or armed security, it is a certainty this crime would have been mitigated sooner or not occurred at all.

His stated intent was to kill as many UNARMED people as possible before the police arrived to take him out.     1. Gun free zones keep people safe.
    Not true. 92% of public shootings since 2009 have occurred inside gun free zones. It’s a pretty easy stat to find. Yet for some reason, anti-gun media just… try to completely ignore it.
    2. They’re committed largely by assault rifles.
    Not even close. 80% of murders involving a firearm are committed by handguns which are procured illegally or fraudulently.
    3. Cities and countries with strict gun laws have lower instances of shootings.
    Nope again. Chicago, a historically gun-free city, saw 82 shootings on July 4th weekend last year, and regularly ranks in the top 3 highest murder rate cities in America. But, when the city began issuing concealed carry permits, the city experienced its lowest murder rate since 1958!
    4. Gun violence is increasing.
    No. Factually, gun violence in the United States is much lower than it was 20 years ago. Statistically speaking, school shootings are extremely rare. Children are actually 100 times more likely to be shot outside a school than in one, and more mass shootings happen at restaurants than at schools.
    5. Violent video games lead to mass killings.
    This is a myth. While many video games are graphically violent, scientists have not been able to find any causal links between video games and mass murder. In fact the recent spate of mass shooters had (predictable) violent psychotic reactions to prescription psychotrophic drugs or were looking for celebraty via media – So instead of trotting out this old lie about the 2nd amendment being to blame, let’s look at the real causation -but this dialogue is rejected by the shrill sloganeering of the civilian disarmament zealots – reason has been replaced by hysteria in public debate – now there’s a tragedy…
