Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

For the hardcore Nanny state engineer, anything that will thin out their public liabilities is good. To a Nanny state planner you are a problem from the day you are born because you are entitled to draw on the social safety net. It’s best for planners and bean counters id A) you were never born or B)you do yourself in before you draw heavily on the public health as a mental patient ot elderly person. So suicide, assisted suicide, and abortion are just alright with the nanny state commissariat.
Open letter to all you Old California Hippies:
Well, you have finally screwed/killed yourselves.
All that Liberal/Socialists Kool Aid and Hashish shit,
You been voting for and smoking has finally come back to bite you in the ass.
Now your grand-kids can say you are acting like a stupid old hippie and have the doctors put you to death.
Never thought I would live to see it,
I wanted to shoot your ass when we came back from Nam.
Now I could come out there, pretend to be a Dr. and put down thousands of stupid Hippies.
The Worm Has Turned…
Guys… I don’t think they’re talking about people offing themselves because they’re sad. This would be for people who are dying horrible deaths of a serious illness. This isn’t about a family’s choice, but about your’s as an individual.
What’s funny (and sad) is that you think this is “nanny state” stuff. This is the exact opposite of the nanny state. This allows individuals to make a choice that should be theirs alone to make. Not some bloody church’s.
nice to see you believe in the sanctity of human life.
I’ve never had a problem with Liberals wanting to commit suicide. My biggest issue is that they want to ban my guns because they can’t trust themselves or their pathetic children to be around any.
Not my problem, I vote yes to Liberal suicide.
It IS nanny state “stuff” John because the phenomena of state assisted suicide exists nowhere else – this kind of detached thinking takes 2 bits of errant ideology/philosophy – first is the state a the grand arbiter and redistributer of all resources – including the lives of its worker bees – it claims a say in their demise either way – Second, it takes the conflicted moral compass of detached secular socialism to regard a human and human life as as being of equivalent value to that of a domestic beast of burden which must be euthanized for it’s own good. That mindset cmes from social Darwinism which presumes to control the evolution of society with eugenics based solutions = worship of the ubermenchen.
Perhaps John the only reason you feel that your viewpoint is the only “right” perspective is because you have never thought deeply or critically enough about the issue or had any personal exposure to the issue – and a viewpoint based in practical experience or rationally assessing all perspectives eludes you.
And no, I’m NOT speaking from religious dogmatism (anticipating the standard philistine proggy retort)actually quite the opposite. I think the church has no more business making decrees of life and death than the state does.
I am in agreement with you except that your last sentence was unnecessary and a distraction to your central point.
I have always felt that laws prohibiting suicide were a huge overreach for GOVERNMENT in a “free” country. And that’s including suicide because of “sadness”. Restricting a person’s right to decide to live or die through a set of LAWS is the ULTIMATE nanny state.
Religion can have strictures against suicide because, by definition, it is a set of voluntary beliefs, not laws. Don’t agree with the stricture, you can leave it behind.
Some people worry that there will be abuse against the disabled, those mentally incapable of making a decision, and the elderly. Most of these worries are directed against family members by implication if not directly. This may or may not be a valid concern but in my opinion it is something which is overstated and over hyped. There are worse things than dying …..
“Assisted suicide” is an oxymoron of course: if you can’t kill yourself without someone else’s assistance, it’s not really suicide anymore, is it?
On the bright side, think of all the money we’ll be saving soon when we close down the suicide hotlines and prevention clinics! After all, if I have an inherent right to bump myself off, why counsel me not to? You’re interfering with my human rights!
Perhaps sometime soon you or I will be driving across a bridge somewhere and suddenly see a poor fellow preparing to jump off and end it all.
We’ll know exactly what to do: get out the car, walk up to him, say, “You need help, son,” and then cheerfully give him a shove to send him on his way!
California is the most topsy-turvey of topsy-turvey worlds.
It’s time to seal it off.
Oh, and shut up, John
It is great to be a believer – One has no right to desert their post, until the order is given by God. Some guy in a local paper once claimed that he had been to the edge, and looked over. However, the edge he was looking over, was actually his wife’s. He was defending “assisted suicide” at the time, but never really said whether he had given her a little ‘assist’ or, more prosaically, a shove. Of course, at the time, it would have been illegal. Now it is just immoral.
