Wow! That was twenty minutes well spent. Cheers, Cheetah.
This was excellent – I work with people who are 30 years younger than I and are very negative about the world. But with my age, and having lived through a large number of societal changes, I look at the world with optimism and let them know that “things are getting better all the time”. Yes, there will be poor people with us but the ones in Canada are poor because they “do stupid stuff”. Canada is one of the best countries in the world, there are a large number of government programs to help people – but you do have to get off your bum and do the work.
These lecturers have a personal bias, their information is out-dated, and they tend toward the sensational.
Nothing more irritating than elites telling me how to think.
what a great talk. thanks for posting.
Lefties are almost uniformly pessimistic about that which they don’t control. Thus they want to control everything.
Yet anything they do control they will not tolerate any criticism of resulting to slander and strawmen.
I generally can’t TED and their audiences for that reason. this speaker is an extremely rare exception – but the audience isn’t.
But but … the media must still continue to use the no longer existent human population bomb thing to scare the people into submitting to the Ruling Class Elites’ plan of control over the masses.
Don’t you understand ?! Without a rising world population their pet talking points surrounding Climate Alarmism are mute. No more Malthusian food shortage scare. No more human maggots proliferating and overwhelming natural resources. No more Peak Oil worries(never was!!). No more suburbia expansion trampling on nature. No more rising carbon dioxide level worries(Never was a worry anyways !!) No more calamity ??!!….. the media will not tolerate that!! so must keep up with their alarmist tactics. Pathetic.
“You were beaten by the chimps…”
outstanding.
How did those chimps get so smart?!
Rosling has given several TED talks – all of them worthwhile watching!
Hans Rosling claims to have a fact-based world view. This is questionable.
Above the TED Talk video is a link to an interview. In it Hans says this: “Nigeria, the largest country in Africa, had a fantastic democratic election. The country’s mediocre government has been replaced by a very competent leader, Muhammadu Buhari. And the entire population backs him up.”
Hmm. Nigeria, a formerly non-Muslim nation has just elected a Muslim president. Interesting. But he must be a moderate for Hans to rave about him like this. Right?
1. In the 2011 elections Muhammadu Buhari supported enforcement of Sharia law in Nigeria’s northern states. After he lost, his Muslim supporters attacked Christian settlements in the central part of Nigeria. Human Rights Watch blamed his inflammatory remarks in part for the ensuing violence in which about 800 were murdered. For example, claiming the voting process was flawed he had said, “If what happened in 2011 should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood”. I guess some of his more ardent followers took it to heart.
2. Previously, in 2001 he had expressed his fervent wish for Islam to dominate, not just in the Muslim northern part, but in all of Nigeria: “I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria.” “God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country”.
3. However, in the 2015 election campaign he said the opposite, promising complete freedom of religion. This time he was elected. “Religion must never be used as an excuse to divide us, oppress others or gain unfair advantage. All my life I have expressed the belief that all Nigerians must worship God according to their wish”.
All his life, eh? Apparently that’s not true. Enough Nigerians believed him to elect him President, and at least one Swedish intellectual has a naïve confidence in this Muslim strongman, but I don’t.

Interesting Talk.
Strange that he notes…”Afraid of a different Religion” and then goes on to use a picture with a large Mosque and minarets as a background…hmmm
He talks about Facts. Well Ola, here’s one for you, Sharia Law will prevail in Europe before the end of the Century.
SLAM Dunk buddy…and all the rest of your dissertation will become “nothing”….
Compliments of your unknowing Media, Academia and the Lefty Lunatics the progressives have installed in Sweden’s government….most of whom make Lizzy May look positively sane.
One last time. My two previous comments directing you to some articles about Buhari, including the Obama regime’s assistance in getting him elected, have been withheld. If it happens this time I can only assume there is something seriously wrong with this site.
For example, the same online newspaper you referred me to has an article revealing that Buhari has chosen 75% of his new administration’s cabinet members and other officials from the northern Muslim part of Nigeria. Search for: Outrage grows across Nigeria as Buhari’s lopsided appointments continue. This Muslim strongman may not be good news for Nigeria.
Well, Hans isn’t “afraid of a different religion,” that’s for sure. I hope you’re wrong about Sharia and the fate of Europe but the Roslings are not worried about it at all. Here’s a money quote from Hans about one of the goals of the Rosling’s non-profit organization, Gapminder: “We want people to think: ‘Wow. Muslims are just like me’.”
As someone once said, what could possibly go wrong?

Liberals and darwinists twats using this to prove evolution? Even these chimps know its a load of malarky
My comment held for moderation. What?
Let’s try again.
75% of the officials Buhari has appointed are from the Muslim part of Nigeria.

Obama seemed to like the Muslim candidate in the Nigerian Presidential election – go figure – and did not seem to like his opponent.
