There Shall Be No Depiction Of The Profit Nenshi

“The mayor is very humbled by this portrait. However, he is unable to grant you permission to use this in the Western Art Auction show,” reads the letter, signed by Erin Chrusch, on behalf of His Worship Mayor Naheed K. Nenshi.
The letter, dated Jan 20, 2015, goes on to say Nenshi does not allow his image to be used for profit, and because the Stampede art is auctioned off, it can’t be endorsed.

  1. It’s only copyright infringement depending on who’s doing the asking….not surprised Nenshi would miss a little detail such as copyright.

  2. Nenshi, for better or worse, is a public figure, and I fail to see that he “owns” his likeness. If he did, then he could ban an editorial cartoonist from using his image in the Sun, for example. The artist should just go ahead and enter the painting in the auction, anyway. Or add a pair of horns to the likeness, and call it Calgary’s chief bullshitter.

  3. A yard sale, 50 years hence…
“Who’s that guy in the painting ya got there?”
“No idea. It’s been behind the furnace in my Dad’s basement for thirty years.”
“How much ya want for it?”
    “Five bucks.”
    “Give ya two.”
    “Sold!”

  4. Maybe Nenshi is waiting for someone to create Che-style t-shirts with his likeness on it. You know….with the jaunty beret and the little commie star?

  5. He’s a public political figure. I would doubt he has control of artwork of his image. Newspapers and television regularly make money from his image without his explicit consent. He’s just being a prick. Western Art Auction is the one who is causing the problem and I understand their concern but I’m sure selling it privately would not cause a problem.
Next issue. It looks like a pile of steaming dog crap. Good luck on the 3 grand.

  6. Clearly never heard the expression better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

  7. It’s not Nenshi’s rule that’s stopping him from just selling it at auction. It’s the venue’s.
Either way, I like the idea of calling something else and just selling it ‘open to interpretation’.

  8. Got a better idea to raise funds.
Put a bulls-eye on it and set up an axe-throwing booth.

  9. Nenshi has NO say, the artist is the only one to decide what to do with his work.

  10. Hilarious – the Alberta communist government borrows $6 billion by order-in-council without troubling the legislature. Rachel looks more like Alison every day. One more thing – the deficit is going to be at least $8 billion. It has to be given how Rachel reversed all of Prentice’s cuts and killed his tax increases, plus government revenues are dropping.

  11. I heard the artist on QR77 this morning. The issue was the Western Art Auction wouldn’t take the piece without His Highness signing off. The artist indicates he will sell the piece privately and given it’s newly gained “provenance” he expects a higher price.
Way to go “Worlds Best Mayor”, you beclowned yourself and made the artist more dough…

  12. I’m still waiting for Nenshi to say something adult about the rioters at city hall last summer … I know, forever is a long time.

  13. Paul, I was under the impression that that only applied to pictures of Moe – does Nenshi think he’s the next prophet? Besides, what’s the difference between buying a painting of him and buying a Sun newspaper with a photograph of him on the front page?
Moslems enforce their rules only when it results in an advantage to them.

  14. I’m inclined to shove some cash to anyone who buys it, has someone shit on it, then burn it … on youtube.

  15. Surely there is an error in the wording. The phrase
“to say Nenshi does not allow his image to be used for profit”
    should read
“to say Nenshi does not allow his image to be used for prophet”.
You have to be respectful here or some of Nenshi’s brethren will not be happy.
