A British wag once dismissed country music as nothing more than “gilted spouses complaining whilst drunk.” There’s some truth to that, but country lyrics often address real-world relationship issues in ways that other forms of music don’t. Here’s a good example: The star-studded Notorious Cherry Bombs‘ marriage-themed complaint It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips At Night That Chew Your…

The final Graf of an excellent column:
Mr. Coates is largely correct about the past and is to a degree correct about the present. About the future, he is catastrophically wrong. The political interests of African Americans, like those of other Americans, are best served by equality under the law. The economic interests of African Americans, like those of other Americans, are best served by a dynamic and growing economy, preferably one in which the labor force is liberated from the dysfunctional, antique Prussian model of education that contributes so much to black poverty. The people to whom reparations were owed are long dead; our duty is to the living, and to generations yet to come, and their interests are best served by liberty and prosperity, not by moral theater.
Living a frugal life imbued with the zeal of the revolution.

Welcome home, EBD.
Thanks Niall.
From an article in Macleans by Jonathan Gatehouse titled America dumbs down.
Macleans: Dumbing up Canadian waiting rooms since 1911.
Thank God you’re back.
(And that Macleans tip should go directly to the main page as is.)
Hey everybody, look who is back! Welcome back EBD. We sho missed you.
Regarding tonight’s musical selection, that might be why a lot of NA men look for Russian and Ukrainian wives. In case you are interested, though, be aware of gold diggers.
And, regarding the Macleans tip, Gatehouse does manage to make take a swipe at those who do not believe in Global Warming and also at George Bush and Sarah Palin.
Macleans dumbing up Canadians since 1911 is right. I cancelled my subscription about fifteen years ago. Yes, I know, I was a little slow with that realization.

I’m not naming names, EBD, but Robert played Celine Dion while you were gone.
I’m sure he meant well. Don’t ever leave us again.

“The gunman who killed three people at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels yesterday remains at large, as leaders from Europe to Israel condemned the attack.
“From camera images we have learned that the perpetrator was probably alone, that he was well prepared and that he was armed,” Ine Van Wymersch, an official in the Brussels judiciary’s investigative arm, told reporters today. Law enforcement officers “are still actively seeking this perpetrator. We are calling for the collaboration of the population to arrest this individual.””

You won’t find any mention of this on the CBC, but you can find a dozen stories about Eve Adams. Hmmm, that is odd.
The Ontario Labour Movement, the people who have shut down our eastern based auto manufacturing, appliance factories, agricultural equipment plants and a thousand other industries have now launched attack ads against Tim Hudak.
Interestingly enough, I doubt that Tim Hudak was even born when the first Ontario GM plants started their down slide because labour problems.
And interestingly enough, the CBC cut off commenting after less that 300 comments on the article.

CTV reports that the Athabasca Glacier is retreating at the ‘astonishing’ rate of 5 meters per year. Surely this is a sign of accelerating global warming and we are all doomed.
Elsewhere in the article, they report that the glacier has retreated 1.5 km since 1890. That calculates as roughly 12 meters per year. Only in the climate change world is 5 greater than 12. Must be the new math.

Wallyj, I’m not a fan of Subban – he’s one of those guys that puts an “I” in “team” — but a lot of athletes keep loose, especially during the extenda-mix “look at me!” performances of the anthems, by shuffling from side to side, shaking their legs out, etc.
Personally, I think there should be a moratorium on national anthems at sporting events other than international competitions where the competitors are representing their country. It would spare us from tacky debacles like Christina Aguilera’s melismatic “twilight’s last reaming” (sic) at the Super Bowl a few years ago, or the NYR’s current anthem singer (who’s a decent singer) pulling out his Rangers towel in the middle of the anthem and waving it around.
