North American Sensibilities.

While progressives and academics calculate the exact amount of generational grief the Moose Jaw Warriors name creates for First Nations, a town in Spain undertakes similar discussions.

The 60 residents of Castrillo Matajudios – which translates as ‘Castrillo Kill Jews’ – will vote on the name change after Mayor Lorenzo Rodriguez submitted the proposal recently.

Addendum: This was posted before I heard about the shootings in Kansas. It feels a little trite, now.

  1. When I was a kid cowboys and indians meant cowboys were awesome and indians were awesome. It’s pretty sad if that goes away.

  2. I think they should go slowly here, not do anything too radical.
Perhaps they should amend the name to “Castrillo wounds Jews” or maybe “Castrillo beats the hell out of Jews” or “Castrillo hates them f***ing Jews and has for over a thousand years”.
I mean, don’t do anything that might detract from the Town’s good name.
Oh,and I’m not going to their festival this year as I don’t particularly like lemonade.

  3. Recently the Public School Board in Saskatoon voted in favour of a motion to force Bedford Road Collegiate to change the name of its sports teams. The offending name was “Redmen”, a name which had been in existence since the early 20’s. It seems that stupidity and eagerness to cater to the overly-sensitive, perpetually-aggrieved troublemakers knows no bounds. Those on the board who gutlessly voted for the change should be asked point-blank if they have nothing better to do.
The Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and Washington Redskins all have supposedly offensive names and should be forced to change forthwith. Likewise the Minnesota Vikings (offensive and hurtful to those of Scandinavian origin), New York Yankees (disrespectful to those living in northern states), Chicago WhiteSox (gives the impression that only “white” players are welcome), Los Angeles Kings (obviously sexist), Pittsburgh Pirates (degrading to buccaneers) and the list goes on and on. I guess the old adage that “if you look hard enough for something to offend you, you will find it” rings true in today’s world.
I don’t envy my grandchildren’s futures with the world being run by cowards and fools.

  4. I think they should rename Moose Jaw to Animalia Chordata Mammalia Artiodactyla Cervidae Capreolinae Mandible to avoid hurt feelings among the Animalia Chordata Mammalia Artiodactyla Cervidae Capreolinae population.

  5. Comparing the name ‘Moose Jaw Warriors’ with ‘Castrillo Kill Jews’ is a bit like comparing cumquats with grapefruit. If a Canadian town’s name translated as ‘Lakota Kill Roundeyes’ there would likely be some heated discussion.

  6. I suspect a slight difference of intent between “Moose Jaw Warriors” hockey team or whatever and a town called “Castrillo Matajudios”. Its an intent that consistently escapes the Indian Industry a-holes that keep raising a fuss about this kind of thing.
As for the Kansas shooting thing Lance, this is the first I’ve heard of it. My knee-jerk first impression? Another gun-free zone performing its intended function.
No disrespect intended to the victims here, but nobody tries this crap in Israel anymore. Suicide bombing was invented because “Palestinian Gunmen” have a life expectancy measured in seconds. Just sayin’.

  7. A warrior is simply a soldier, nothing ethnic. Now if it was the Moose Jaw Wagon Burners? I remember my father remarking at the American graves in Normandy that said “An American Warrior”.

  8. The town was christened during the fall of the caliphate around 1035. My guess is that the massacre was a ‘sore loser’ raid and could just as easily have been named something akin to ‘kill the Christians’; IE a raid against Christians. I’m thinking it was named for its history and a better translation would be ‘place where Jews were killed’, not something so sinister as ‘damn those Jews.’

  9. biffj, you forgot to include Vancouver Canucks. As a Canuck, a slang word for Canadian, I feel I very offended and ashamed. Oh! I forgot, I’m just another whitey so it don’t matter.

  10. Now the question is, will the Mexican border city of Matamoros change it’s name? Matamoros means “kill Moors” in Spanish, i.e. the Muslim rulers of Spain for 700 years…

  11. Let me get this straight, some socialist thinks it is a bad thing to honour native North Americans by naming sports teams after the native’s bravest and best while another socialist goes off his meds and kills some people who belong to a group he despises. Anyone see a similarity here?

  12. The smell of surrender to Islam is thicker than the stench of a slaughterhouse. Which is the end game .

  13. Did no one on the left consider that maybe the names Sports Clubs were named after actually pay homage to things?
Our ancestors may not have had the best dealings with the Native folk of North America but they certainly respected their prowess for battle. Generally sports clubs were named something that people took pride calling themselves.

  14. How about Matamoros? Like in Santiago Matamoros, patron saint of Spain? Time for another Reconquista?

  15. The reason it was called that is because it was the Jews that helped the Muslims invade the Iberian peninsula in the first place. Then Jews worked hand in hand with the Muslims to enslave the non-Jews and non-Muslims.
It’s an uncomfortable fact, but it’s a fact. When you think about the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion of Jews and Muslims just remember that it’s a good idea to purge enemies that allied in shared hate for Christians.
