“Ron Turcotte remembers a feeling of floating on air.”

That’s when I looked across the track. A lot of people think that the pic — the photo was me looking back where the — the other horses was, which was not. I had an eye on the crowd, and I had an eye on — on the inboard — clock. And I could see the time, and I could see — it looked like — you heard the term — a whitecap on an ocean…

This year’s field leaves the gate at 6:20 p.m. ET.

  1. God what a horse that was. Sadly, that race marked the peak of horse racing – legalized gambling across NA has decimated it.

  3. I have viewed this video more times than I can count….probably the greatest race and the greatest horse in history. Watching Secretariat make his move from being neck and neck with Sham, and then with every stride opening up a wider lead to result in such an incredible finish gives me chills every time.

  4. Yup Gord – you don’t have to feed VLTs, plus you can’t get desperate people to insert endless loonies into a horse….

  5. Secretariat had a very big engine
A typical horse has a 8 to 10 pound heart. Secretariat’s heart was 22 lbs. In race car terms your competition has small block Chevy engines and you show up with a turbocharged 12 cylinder Ferrari engine. It was over before it started.

  6. Probably the best performance by any horse. Correct me if I’m wrong but his time in that race still stands as the world record for that distance.
Other than that – what can you say that hasn’t already been said about wonder horse.

  7. Incredibly, the horse accelerated through the race. Each 1/4 mile was faster than the previous quarter. In one of the longest races for horses at any time. Never been done before. Likely will never be done again.
