  1. The problem with anybody as inexperienced as Obama is that he really has to make 5hit up as he goes along, or rely on the multitudinous voices advising him. Because he’s coasted on the work of others his whole life, he really has no idea how to approach many of these problems – well, I should say, in a serious way that produces results.
This isn’t just trying to shake down corporations with money by trying to make them feel guilty. This is the big show.

  2. To Kate @1213 – I thought he was talking about sending troops into Detroit to achieve political stability, sorry
PS – thanks for this website!

  3. sarge, although previously you’ve threatened me with physical violence, I will still talk with you. :-/
I think the Bush/Cheney major misfire was not “hiring” the Iraq Republican Guard as “the new domestic militia in Iraq” (or whatever you want to call it).
Sending guys packing who have a lot of experience in war etc, is not necessarily a good thing.
That being said, there were also some misfirings WRT capturing ObL – that gets back to the whole “hearts and minds” thing – not well suited for blog resolution.

  4. Erik,
As you stated, “WRT capturing ObL”…not suited for blog resolution. That being said, I have always had a nagging suspicion that Bush never really wanted ObL “found” anyway. I always felt his location was pretty well known, if in fact the intent was to resolve that issue. The ObL search was one of the major reasons (amongst others of course) for a military presence in the Middle East…that and oil, of course.

  5. Garry – I’m not one for conspiracy theories – but the whole “petrodollar” thing being threatened by the Euro – well – it’s not implausible. Cheers

  6. “No human endeavor can be as profound as sending a nation’s youth to war. I am very happy to see serious men and women working hard to get it right.”
Yes, but are they getting it right? That’s entirely a matter of conjecture at the moment, not fact.

  7. I tend to agree with the view of Mark Steyn, that Osama Bin Laden is long, long dead. Buried. Whether by a military attack or by his own well-known diseases is not relevant.
As for the notion of Either Afghanistan OR Iraq, my view is that the two wars are completely different in agenda and both are necessary.
The Iraq war agenda was to remove a dictator and enable an Islamic country to move out of the out-dated tribalist economic-political mode and into a civic model of democracy. This agenda has a long term goal of dealing with Islamic fascism at its long-term root cause.
This root cause is the repression of a large multi-million population into a two-class rather than three-class economic and political structure. A two class system is tribal, with an elite dictatorial governance and the rest of the population without economic and political power. With the power of oil revenues, the Middle East Muslim nations were able to repress the need of their exponentially increasing population, for full participation in an industrial economy..and keep them powerless.
This is the basic cause of Islamic fascism. In a population that size, with an industrial economy, the population in power must not be a small elite tribe but the mass of the people; there must be a middle class that has the power.
Enabling a democracy to emerge – and it would never have done so on its own because of the repression by an oil-funded dictatorship – was a lynch pin to advance democracy in the ME. It’s a long term agenda.
Afghanistan has a short-term focus; it’s to reduce the power of Al Qaeda as a fighting force. Afghanistan is far more difficult as a site to enable democracy because it has not been unified at any stage – as have the ME states – and operates as a hodge podge collection of tribes, who fight against a fragile so-called central govt. Simply getting rid of one central government wouldn’t result in a population focused around developing a middle class, because so much of the country is not industrial, is isolated in small-scale peasantry..and in opium production.
The two wars have completely, totally, different agendas and should not be compared in any way.

  10. I’m afraid that Pres Obama doesnt realize that he has’nt the option of more troops or not. It’s more troops or get out.If he wants to be remembered as the pres that started a global war with the Taliban and their allies then he gets out and fights them someplace else along with their axis of evil.Europe isnt ready to erupt but its close. If he defeats them in Afganistan it will send a message. The communists lost the war in Vietnam but they won it in America and America surrendered.

“Afghans Torch Obama Effigy Over ‘Koran Abuse’ Claims
Furious Afghans torched an effigy of US President Barack Obama and hurled stones at police today during a mass protest over allegations that Western troops set fire to a copy of the Koran.
A crowd of around 1,000 demonstrators, mainly university students, marched through the streets of the capital Kabul
    SNIP
The demonstrators, almost all men, chanted: “Death to America, death to Jews and Christians!” as they burned a model of Obama and a United States flag.
Some wore black ribbons on their foreheads, calling for a jihad.
    The BBC has more:
    SNIP
The US-led Nato force has denied the claims, saying it has investigated the incident in Wardak province and found the allegations to be groundless.
The local authorities there have so far supported Nato.
They say they did find evidence that a Koran had been burnt, but blamed drug addicts and said the Taliban may be spreading rumours that foreign troops were responsible to provoke anti-American unrest.”
