Good evening, EBD here. Welcome to SDA Late Night Radio, Wednesday edition. Tonight for your entertainment The Pogues join together with The Dubliners on Irish tv to sing Irish Rover.
Amusing note: near the end of the song, at approx. 3:46, the Pogue’s singer Shane McGowan (he’s the guy between the ears) and the combined members of the two bands spring a surprise ending on the Dubliner’s singer Ronnie Drew. Cracks me up every time.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

I’ll start the reader tips- It’s detective time, kids. Surely to goodness we can dig up when and where the NDP bought all those fancy signs the pro-coalition ralliers were sporting at their shindigs. Anyone willing to wager they weren’t purchased well before the Canadian public even knew they had a coalition to protest against?
Fine selection, EBD. Somehow, I’d let the Pogues slip off my regular-listening roster. That has been rectified, thanks to this, and I feel more energized, nihilistic and cynical (in a good way), as well as in touch with my ethnic roots, already. Things are looking up.
Dare we hope for Fairytale of New York on an upcoming LNR, as the festive season draws closer? Christmas Eve in the drunk tank – the sentimental resonance is, surely, universal.
I just caught up on Charles Adler’s show today. What made me most furious was the utter arrogance of the Globe & Mail’s Gloria Galloway. A Liberal by any other name is still a Liberal!
The clear message to all of us is that the Coalition is NOT Dead! I expanded upon my thoughts here: http://pelalusa.blogspot.com/2008/12/beware-coalition-is-not-dead.html
Incidentally, is it now officially 1 day or 2 days since Ignatieff has become the head of the Coalition that 0% of Canadians voted for? I’m thinking of creating a Javascript counter for my blog to automatically keep track of this. I would readily give it to any others who’d like to add it to theirs.
Did anyone watch Iggy at his news conference today? What about the slits he had in the place of his eyes. What did he do, pull an all nighter and then show up hung over or wasted?
Another pair also goin to, sorry, leaving New York.
Terry Black and Laurel Ward
I’m almost surprised to read of the Liberals continued support for the coalition by stealth… after their polling numbers became public knowledge? what are they thinking?
From the Financial Times;
[ They say that journalists prefer bad news to good news. There is plenty of that close to home.] FT
[ The recession has turned the long, slow decline of newspapers into a brisk fall. On Tuesday, I dropped into a UBS investor conference in New York to catch Gary Pruitt, chief executive of the McClatchy newspaper chain, calling its results “lousy”. At this rate, US newspapers will be lucky to make it to the weekend.] FT
[ Many American journalists, facing job losses and the death of an industry they loved, regard it as a tragedy not just for them but for society. They fear that television, radio and blogs can never replace what newspapers provided for readers.] FT
Excuse me !!
” … can never replace what newspapers provided for readers.”
Spin. Bias. Propaganda.
Replace, yes. Duplicate ? No.
A tragedy for society !!?? Puleeeeze !
The real tragedy has been the dominance of Journalistic propaganda ever since Gutenberg’s 1452 invention.

Ad$Cam is back to haunt Iggy-liberals.

“Michael Ignatieff’s aide tries to silence me with a lawsuit
Michael Ignatieff’s campaign aide, Warren Kinsella, is threatening to sue me for writing about his involvement in Adscam. You can see a copy of his libel notice here.
Justice John Gomery, who chaired the Judicial Inquiry into that scandal, named Kinsella more than a dozen times in his report. You can read the whole thing here – or just search for the word “Kinsella” to get to the point. On page 160 of the report, in a chapter called “Who is responsible?” Justice Gomery noted that Kinsella, then chief of staff to Public Works Minister David Dingwall, tried to steer lucrative government advertising and polling contracts away from their proper course and towards Chuck Guite instead. Guite was later convicted of five counts of fraud.
Justice Gomery called Kinsella’s conduct “a highly inappropriate attempt by political staff to interfere in the internal administration of [Public Works]”.
Folks, that’s not an allegation. That’s a judicial finding of fact. And true facts are a defence to libel.
There’s only one reason why Kinsella would sue in the face of the Gomery Commission’s findings. Well, two if you include Kinsella’s temper – he’s clearly embarrassed and angry that anyone would dare mention his questionable past. The other reason is that he thinks he can silence me through nuisance lawsuits.
Kinsella has already sued me once this year for pointing out another true fact – that he gave help and advice to the anti-Semitic Canadian Islamic Congress in their failed attempt to censor Maclean’s magazine.
That lawsuit by Kinsella against me didn’t make sense, either – again, truth and fair comment applied there, too. Kinsella had boasted about helping the CIC on his own website.”

“The Plague
Camus set The Plague in the Algerian city of Oran. In April the inhabitants begin to notice more and more dead and dying rats. Panic spreads throughout the population as the sight of staggering, dying rats and the bodies they leave behind become more and more commonplace. The collection and cremation of the rats begins as the human population starts falling ill with a mysterious fever. The doctors become convinced the illness is bubonic plague but the authorities are slow to act. Finally, as Oran is ravaged by the plague, the city is placed under quarantine.”

Geez Maz2, Kinsella may be a Lawyer but he’s a Liberal first and that must be clouding his thought process.
Surely one can’t be sued for stating documented facts. He’s threatening to sue in order to silence people because he doesn’t want to hear or read about them.
With Liberals we can expect anything. With 77 seats in the HOC they think they should be calling the shots and running the government their way.

Looks like Harper is going to fill all the vacant Senate seats and already the lefties are spewing that Harper is violating his principles, is undemocratic blah, blah, blah. Seems he’s thinking of filling them with Conservative supporters. The horrors! We all know that Chretien filled it with people based on qualifications and partisanship had absolutely nothing to do with it. Aren’t these the same people that voted down or supported voting down an elected Senate and now they’re made the seats are being appointed. Idiots.
A few more disappearing acts have gone on.

I don’t call them the Party of Liars and Thieves for nuttin’.
How anybody in their right mind can vote for the Liberals is totally beyond me.
bill greenwood – yes, those signs were obviously prepared well in advance, just as the agenda to take down the govt over a financial vote was also planned well in advance. Harper smoked them out with his ‘fiscal update’ which was so ‘in your face’ that they had to react rather than wait for the 2009 budget.
bob – yes, Ignatieff’s eyes..are invisible. Recall how our MSM so frequently attacks Harper as somehow unacceptable because, they say, his ‘eyes are too small’. I wonder what the MSM will say about Ignatieff’s non-existent eyes?
As for the coalition, and its members are interestingly, not saying a word about the polls and immediate reaction against it – it’s still there. But Ignatieff can hardly openly reject it without declaring that he and ALL the Opposition MPs, including ALL Liberals, were guilty of a deceptive and undemocratic agenda. So, he’ll simply not talk about it and hope it, like Adscam and our missing millions, and Olivia Chow’s poll, vanishes from the public eye.
Ignatieff is currently busy publicly defining himself as a Big Man, beating his chest and declaring that he will Stand Up To Harper and so on. He’s not going to mention the Coalition; instead, his agenda is to present himself as the one with the initiative and ability to ‘quickstart’ the economy.
The SCC has also just declared that the Liberal federal govt broke the law in 2002,03, 05, with regard to collecting massive surpluses in EI without parliamentary approval (no taxation without representation).
By the way, I think that this declaration of the SCC on ‘no taxation without representation’ would apply to the role of the Bloc in the Coalition and its promise not to defeat the Coalition on a financial/budget vote. Since the Bloc is outside the electoral reach of over 80% Canadians, then, this is ‘taxation without representation’.
The Amman Message, takfir, and jihad:
Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, The Role of Consensus in the Contemporary Struggle for Islam
Jordan’s King Abdullah II launched an ambitious project in November 2004 designed to address some of the thorniest theological issues currently facing Muslims. The project, known as the “Amman Message,” expressly holds that non-Muslims can reasonably “expect certain things from Muslims” in the contemporary context, in which Muslims and non-Muslims have unprecedented contact. The Amman Message was self-consciously launched against the backdrop of the “global war on terror,” where predominantly stateless terror networks claiming allegiance to Islam have managed to drastically alter the geopolitical landscape.
In his introduction to a volume published in 2006, True Islam and the Islamic Consensus on the Amman Message, Jordan’s Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad bin Talal outlines seven areas in which he believes non-Muslims can expect certain things from Muslims. These include the rights of women, condemnation of terrorism, freedom of religion, and Muslim citizens’ loyalty to the non-Muslim countries in which they live. The fact that these issues generate great controversy within the Muslim community makes even more audacious the method by which the Amman Message seeks to address them: through forging scholarly consensus…

More from the article on the Amman Message project:
“That every top authority on Islamic law in the world rejects Bin Laden’s conclusions and his temerity in declaring a ‘fatwa’ is, lamentably, often never mentioned in the West. … [Bin Laden’s] method amounts to a cherry-picking of sources to arrive at a conclusion that was decided beforehand. It is misleading to present Bin Laden, and others like him, as men steeped in their religious tradition who take Islam’s teachings to their logical conclusions. For all the talk about ‘madrasahs’, which is simply the word for ‘school’, it is important to note that the terrorists who claim to fight in the name of Islam today are almost entirely men educated in medicine, engineering, mathematics, computer science, etc. … It is striking how absent graduates of recognized madrasahs or Islamic seminaries (such as al-Azhar in Egypt) are among the ranks of the terrorists.” (Jihad and the Islamic Law of War, p. 65-66)
My comment:
The fundamental ethical principle of a civilized society is that no person has the right to initiate the use of force on any other. That protects freedom of religion as well as other rights. Like a dictatorship, the Muslim world is unfortunately in thrall to advocates of violence who prey on the weak and the disaffected, such as by trying to provoke unearned guilt. The optimistic view is that thoughtful Muslims will continue to turn to reason rather than force, realizing that it is entirely in their interests to do so, and that the terrorists ultimately will crumble like the Berlin Wall in 1989.
