She forgot to add blackmailing resource campanies, contractors, etc. etc,… to her first paragraph.
It is evident that the bien-pensant liberals have done much more harm to the first nations peoples than the Christian missionaries. And whenever one of the liberal oppressors cries “foul” against a realist, I always ask, “cui bono?” We know well who benefits: not the typical first nations person, but his or her bosses and headmen, and the DINA bureaucrats living comfortable lives in Ottawa.
It is curious that the people on FaceBook calling Margaret Wente “ignorant” did’t post any references.
When will Canada’s indians compensate and apologize to those of the U.S., Central, and South America for the land that they stole?
It’s hard to know where to even begin. But cultures can’t possibly be “equal” because they each had different ecological advantages and disadvantages. The First Nations people did not have horses and cattle for one thing. We too often take it for granted that Northern Europeans were able to get a lot more work done and thus have time to invent things , simply because they had working animals.
This whole thing is akin to S 13 in the HRCs. We as a society have to stop the politically correct fascists from shutting down discussion on cultures. Cultures are not equal … period.
Margaret Wente deserves the Order of Canada for tabling her thoughts which are not racist.
to answer your question Kate, yes but only certain portions of society would have facebook available 😉

Anyone have time to start a DON’T Fire Wente Facebook group? I’ll join but I’m too busy to do much more than that.
Here’s the thing about the Indians: they gave us cigarettes; we gave ’em booze. I call it even.
When I took history in junior high, in French, the teachers regularly used the term “sauvages”. It has a different connotation than in English and does not translate to “savages” as is being reported.
Besides, if Dick Pound can get sacked for calling Natives “savages”, shouldn’t Steve Paikin take the high jump for calling the largely white Conservative party “barbarians”, a term historically used exclusively to refer to white people, and not positively?
If only those Facebook group members would show the same passion for those issues that actually might benefit indigenous peoples, such as institutionalized welfare, the lack of property rights on reserve, or band council corruption.
I started a Climate Change Infidels Facebook group once, but Facebook users just don’t seem to be looking for an unpopular bandwagon to jump on.
There is a movement afoot to get DNA samples from North Americans to determine their ancestry. Some African Americans have participated and have found their ancestral roots traced to small villages in Africa.
North American aboriginal groups have thus far refused to participate. It would be disastrous to their cause if it were ever proven that they in fact did not originate in North America.
Ah jeez…can we expect writs flying from Lucy and Warren now?

A few years ago, whenever I read certain pronouncements coming from the far-left I couldn’t help but hear in my head the accent of a Maoist woman pulling the hair of another woman in a public square while surrounded by a revolutionary crowd. Increasingly I’m hearing that same accent when I read the pronouncements of politically correct, vaguely progressive individuals too. Try it yourself: From the Facebook link, “(We demand) that the self-described ‘Canada’s National Newspaper’ immediately repudiate Wente’s comments, and stop giving place of pride to Wente’s virulent column and other like it.”
From the Huntington Post: “The shrill Republican witch-hunt to demonize ACORN signaled the launch of their insidious endgame strategy. The Current Charges against ACORN are frivolous distractions…”
Revolutionary Socialism may be dormant, but the tone — the precursor — is starting to make a comeback.
Hey, being able to raid neighboring bands for hot ch1x0rz is waaaaaaaaaay better than Facebook, dontcha know.
Maybe the Globe will get hauled up before the HRC…..please please please haul them up…..
Damn you, a bunch of right wing redneck warmonger freespeechers!
Margaret Wendt. Right-wing commentary. Hmmmm.
How left-wing do you have to be to consider Maggie right-wing?
Wow.
Great point, Rob.
But that would involve actually getting off their butts, working and maybe even contributing something to society, instead of bitching and calling attention to themselves like the spoiled parasitical children they are…
Margaret Wente’s column is not racist as far as I can see. The problem is that people hate the truth: more so the moonbats on the left.
Patron Saint of Canada: St. Jean Brebeuf
“St Jean Brébeuf worked primarily among the Huron Indians in Quebec, Canada. He was born near Saint-Lo, Normandy, and ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1622. In 1625 he arrived in the New World with the French explorer Samuel de Champlain. When the village of his Jesuit mission was taken by the Iroquois, Brébeuf and the French Jesuit missionary Gabriel Lalemant, his associate, were made prisoners and tortured to death in 1649. The tortures they endured are considered among the most hideous in the entire history of martyrdom.
His memory is cherished in Canada more than that of all the other early missionaries. His heroic virtues, manifested in such a remarkable degree at every stage of his missionary career, his almost incomprehensible endurance of privations and suffering, and the conviction that the reason of his death was not his association with the Hurons, but hatred of Christianity, has set on foot a movement for his canonization as a saint and martyr.”
“The Hurons began to yield only when their pride was broken. They were finally humbled by the Iroquois invaders, who at mid-century declared total war on their nation. Raiding parties of Iroquois from New York State killed off or scattered the Huron nation forever. One whole Huron village, St. Michel, migrated to near Victor, N.Y., as a captive community. All but one of the Canadian Jesuit martyrs were killed by these Iroquois invaders. In the face of war, many Hurons asked Brébeuf for baptism. The enemy came upon him and his newly arrived associate Father Gabriel Lalemant, at St. Joseph village on March 16, 1649. Them they reserved for the most fierce torture-deaths. They flayed them, roasted their flesh, “baptized” them with boiling water. The veteran missionary spoke out to the bystanding Christians, urging them not to falter in their faith. Despite the exquisite torments, this giant of a man never winced, infuriating and amazing his persecutors by his fortitude. Finally they split his skull, tore out his heart, and drank its blood, thinking to imbibe his courage.”
Pealing off your skin and having it eaten in front of you would be considered by most to be savagery.
The point is, natives today don’t flay alive what is left of the missionary spirit in Canada.
Having an accurate description of neo-lithic cultures is not denigrating to current native inhabitants of Canada.
Most anthropologists/historians would also agree that native cultures also imparted skills to newcomers to help them adapt to the land, in terms of hunting/gathering and survival skills.
Knee jerk jumping to conclusions does a disservice to an accurate portrayal of native contributions to Canada’s history.
This is about as useful as describing natives as a group as drunk welfare layabouts. There are plenty who can swing a hammer as well as a white man.
Stereotyping historical cultures and applying them to today’s circumstances is not only stupid but inaccurate. Margarete Wente clearly wrote about the time period 400 years ago.
No one today is going to make that assessment of today’s native population. The only idiot coming close to that today, was a white man named Willie Picton who was grinding up poor prostitutes on his farm.
Now you want savagery, I think Willie Picton fits the bill.
Cheers

What a strange game of history telling.
How does it matter one way or the other? Pound should have defended himself by noting that 5000 years ago, most Europeans were living primitively in forests – way behind their contemporary counterparts in India, China, the Mediterannean and Egypt. The Southern Europeans in Greece and Rome called them ‘Barbarians’. But then Rome is only 3,000 years old, and Greece 4,000, a fair bit behind the Mesopotamians and Indus Valley folk. Or even the Egyptians.
Civilizations are rarely equal. At any given point, one is superior to the other. Why is it so wrong to say that? If we can forgive the Romans for calling our ancestors barbarians, why can’t the natives do the same?
Truth died under PET, with his successors. Its who you are in a government rated hierarchy, not facts that mean anything. Reality has gone on a vacation to folks who think intelligence means conformity of thought. History & archeology by the emoters of feelings over actuality, become themselves vehicles for the re-interpretation of events to suite the social madness of the day o adjusting them to modern notions. The media is invested not as independent seekers of facts, but a force of propaganda threw there own thrall to neo-Marxist ideology..
There’s a particularly idiotic piece about this in the Globe today by a Hayden King who “teaches” at McMaster. No point me trying to link, but do google it youselves if you enjoy feeling your own blood-pressure shoot up. It’s braindead about twelve different ways, but oh-so-typical (I’d know; I have an Anthropology degree, which has rendered me highly employable in no field I’d touch with an electrified bargepole.)
Happy Hollowe’en folks. Anyone dressing up as Richard Warman?
I believe Mark Steyn said in his lexicon of evil, no one really believes all cultures are equal if pressed. But most aren’t pressed being the soft liberal dough-heads they are.
It is nice to want to believe that all people and cultures are equal but it is not reality. The reality is that the closer you live to native culture, the harder it is to ignore the fact that the majority of their problems stem from their own behaviour.
The response to Ms. Wente’s column illustrates just how ingrained is political correctness in the psyche of the nation.
Truth doesn’t matter.
Historical facts don’t matter.
Heck, current facts don’t matter.
What matters are the twin fallacies that all cultures are equal and that white/Euro culture is inherently bad. Similarly what matters is maintaining the lie through state speech codes, which are a by-product of PC.
And why do these things trump truth and history? Because the twin fallacies provide the guilt complex and path to the public coffers. Expose the lie, the cultural guilt fades and the wealth of the whities goes bye-bye.
Good for Wente treading where Steyn and Levant have been.
This is from a few years ago, so she was testing the waters and mocking the ‘Canadian so called culture’ even then.

Shaidle’s so funny!
She’s been retailing that “they gave us cigarettes/we gave’em booze” line for years.

And let’s not mention that the “Mother Earth” meme was invented in Berkeley about 30 years ago…
“Wente’s right-wing commentary has long been inflammatory and notable for its scant regard for serious research or facts”
This is fueled purely by partisan faux-outright.
However, assuming the word savage means in French what I believe it to be in English, his choice of words was at least tactless. Certainly not entirely accurate either.
Or, if you believe their description to be true, then most cultures of that era must also be defined as savage. For witch-burning, cannibalism, slavery, etc, etc, etc were hardly civilized behaviors.
You know, I have seen many many instances of those from the left just not grasping the true nature of mankind. The true vile and cruel behavior we are capable of in every corner of the world. They seem to look at the world the same way 10 yr olds do.
The bottom line is Wente is being attacked because she is white and on the right.
If you really want to start a ruckus look up Iroquois cannibalism as they ate the Huron.
I wouldn’t call Wente on the right – her last column basically says the only people who like Palin are males who want her as a dominatrix. I’ve heard Wente on Vancouver radio saying the only reason McCain picked Palin was because she is hot. If Wente was remotely on the right she would realize Palin has single handedly energized a very dispirited Conservative base because she’s for small government, lower taxes, anti-corruption, anti-abortion, etc. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20081023.COWENT23/TPStory/TPComment/?query=
I know who the REAL racists are! The liberals who lie to the natives and keep them fumbling around lost in the grip of their defunct culture, keeping them from participating fully in the society that is all around them.
Maybe Dick Pound was just wrong about the dates. Not salvages 400 years ago but about 200 years ago this was the state of BC civilization.
John Rodgers Jewitt (born on 21 May 1783 in Boston, England) was an armourer who entered the historical record with his memoirs about the three years he spent as a captive of Maquinna of the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people on the Pacific coast of what is now Canada.
During his period of slavery Jewitt was asked to file the teeth of the king’s elder brother. He did so without understanding why, but found out it was to enable the chief to bite off the nose of a new wife who refused to sleep with him.
How does that sound to you, Fire Margaret Wente – Face book gals?
Wente is neither on the right or the left, she tells the truth which can upset both sides.
I guess if Wente and Pound can come under such severe attacks they have no culture.
If Steyn is right and the Muslims are going to take over, I can’t say we don’t deserve it.
More that 1/2 of Canadians are too stupid to live.
It would be called PaleFaceBook and you be in heapum big trouble if you use it without permission of The Chief.
How.
Most of her article is pretty well written, but she could’ve left out a few things. Overall, it’s a good article.
“Having access to a massive, influential audience is a privilege, and should be revoked when it is abused”
Then fire most of the CBC:
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2008/09/19/cbc-exec-columnist-who-compared-sarah-palin-to-porn-star-is-quot-insightful-quot-and-quot-witty-quot.aspx
And much more subversively,
http://blackrod.blogspot.com/2007/12/ethics-expert-investigating-cbc-liberal.html
There’s two recent examples of gross journalistic abuse intentionally infected on a massive influential audience. The sooner the Ministry of Lies is gutted, the better.
