CWB: “A vital question of control”

They stab it with their steely knives…

The government, the three justices ruled, had the right to order the CWB to pretty well do whatever it wanted, under Section 18(1) of the Canadian Wheat Board Act, which states that “the Governor in Council may, by order, direct the Corporation with respect to the manner in which any of its operations, powers and duties under this Act shall be conducted, exercised or performed.” Directors must consider these orders, whatever their own opinions, to be in the “best interest” of the board. The Board, they added, “is a creature of statute and, as such, it has no powers, rights and duties save those bestowed on it by the Act.” As much as the CWB may claim to be a farmer-run, independent agency, unanswerable to Ottawa, this is, according to the high court’s ruling, a delusion on the part of directors who apparently repeated it to themselves so often that they came to believe it. According to the law, the CWB is the official property of the agricultural ministry.
Not surprisingly, the CWB, even today, insists differently. And it now says it will to use the revenues it takes from selling Western farmers’ wheat and barley to battle the government again, having pledged recently to take the case to the Supreme Court of Canada—so it can argue in favour of using Western farmers’ wheat and barley to continue to fight against allowing farmers the freedom to sell their grains independently.

Obama Says His Health Plan Won’t ‘Pull The Plug On Grandma’

Unless her name is “Terry Schiavo”

That controversy was an unsettling one: the issue was what to do about a woman who had no medically realistic prospects for recovery, was consuming expensive healthcare dollars, and had left no reliable instructions on what her wishes would be in that situation, and a lot of people were very uncomfortable with either option, continuing to pay for her care or depriving her of nourishment. Public opinion at the time was hardly unanimous on what should be done (indeed, even some high-profile left-wingers sided with those who opposed removing Schiavo’s feeding tube). The conventional wisdom in the pundit class was that the damage done was all to one side – that the flap revealed the GOP to be in the thrall of religious extremists. I don’t doubt that some such damage was indeed done. But little attention was paid to the fact that the Right vs Left narrative of the Schiavo episode – one willingly stoked by Democrats eager to capitalize on precisely the “Religious Right overreach” angle – painted the Left as the advocates of ‘pulling the plug’ on Terri Schiavo. Another anecdote had been added to the public’s collective memory of what the two sides stand for – an anecdote, I should add, that is consistent with other pieces of the puzzle, as the Left has clashed with the same pro-lifers again and again on abortion, assisted suicide, and the destruction of embryos for stem cell research. Sarah Palin’s invocation of her Down’s Syndrome son Trig is another flashpoint: it is the Left that insists that it is appropriate to abort a child when prenatal testing reveals such a condition, and it was from the Left that we heard crude jibes suggesting that Palin should have done just that. A coherent pattern emerges, forms itself and takes root in the public’s mind.

An excellent read.

Y2Kyoto: Anthropogenic Continental Drift

Move over, global warming….

The continents rest on massive tectonic plates. Until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the mid 18th century, these plates were fixed in place and immobile. However, drilling for oil and mining for minerals has cut these plates loose from their primordial moorings and left them to drift aimlessly. “The potential for damage is truly catastrophic,” said Hans Brinker, a spokesman for the International Panel on Continental Drift (IPCD). “The continents are adrift due to the ruthless capitalist exploitation of the environment for profit. Unless immediate steps are taken to halt all oil and mineral extraction, we can expect a massive surge in earthquakes and volcanos by next Tuesday.” The representative seemed close to tears during his announcement, a clear indicator of the severity of the threat.

This widening of the Atlantic is taking place at an astounding rate, according to indisputable IPCD scientific data. Today it costs almost a third again as much to fly an Air France jet from New York to Paris than it did in 1997, a clear indicator that the ocean has indeed increased in size in the past decade. Surface shipping rates have likewise increased dramatically.

Reader Tips

Welcome to the Wednesday (EBD) edition of SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight’s song is about food — specifically, about how darned tasty it is. Here it is, then: The Ink Spots sing themselves into a lather at the prospect of Pork Chops And Gravy with some cornbread and blackberry jam. And candied yams, and fried chicken…
Note the falsetto interjections (“In the bag!”) provided by the hungry happy-foot fella who is – clearly — so whipped up by his anticipation of the listed fare that he can’t help but burst into food-induced vocalized delirium. That’s one hungry man.
The comments are open for your tasty and filling Reader Tips.

Y2Kyoto: The Final Countdown

It’s nearly over;

“We have just four months. Four months to secure the future of our planet.” – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Does someone want to come up with a suitable doomsday clock for the sidebar? Because I, for one, look forward to December 11 – the day when it’s officially “too late” to save the planet, and we can all get back to our normal lives and let the Kyoto cultists get on with digging their underground flood shelters..

Nothing But Tumbleweeds In The Lonely Drive-Thru’s

The Montreal Gazette headline screams!*Tim Hortons In Damage Control Mode

Canada’s coffee giant has served up some controversy south of the border after a regional Tim Hortons office in Rhode Island agreed to sponsor a rally hosted by an anti-gay-marriage organization.

I’m too busy at the moment to drive to town to witness the corporate destruction for myself, . but I figure lots of you out there have camera phones. Let the damage reports roll in….
(*So, it doesn’t exactly scream, but not since the Cudworth Mud Hen Murders has such a non-story gone national, so work with me…)
UPDATE: From our correspondent “Marc” in the Timmie’s parking lot, Airdrie, Alberta – not a good sign…
From Ron in Kelowna … more carnage…

“We didnt know it was illegal”

A few quick thoughts….
Two of these “good ol boy” wannabe’s are recent transplants from Toronto.

They should not be held responsible for their actions.
For all their lives the CBC, Toronto Star and urban politicians have painted for them a stereotype of Saskatchewan that told them that driving around and shooting things is our number one sport after bale stacking.
Moving to Saskatchewan was their best CBC Redneck Wet Dream – a fact underlined today in a quote captured by Rawlco Radio’s Tammy Roberts“We didn’t know the laws in your country”.
We can’t blame them for that, just as we shouldn’t blame the CBC reporters roaming the prairie countryside today looking for a grain elevator – any grain elevator – to satisfy the producers demands for the duck murder news broadcast tonight…
