I remember one anthropology professor, fond of praising cannibal tribes and such, who thought it was horrible the way we treated the mentally ill and thought that it was much better what primitive tribes did in giving them honored places in society like making them shamans. At the time I thought no wonder they didn’t advance if they let their society be led by those with the least attachment to reality. It seems we are “catching up” with the cannibals, and I am sure he would be pleased with the results. Of course his university sinecure would isolate him from the consequences.
He wasn’t all bad however, when a French consulate invited him to an event, and seeking help with trade asked what the major differences between France and North America were, he responded that North Americans buy their bread once a week and shower every day. He was never invited back.
