Shortly after Trump won the election someone in New York put some antisemitic graffiti on the windows of the subways in New York. I got an outraged note from an in-law cousin, a Liberal Jew and devoted Hillary supporter. The note was a broadcast one cc’d to all our common friends and relatives and a whole bunch of people including his Rabbi. The note was almost entirely in all caps and it basically said this was my wife’s fault for voting for Trump. Trump had done this.
I replied to him alone that if Trump had done it, he would have signed it. Trump was not responsible. Trump has a Jewish daughter and Jewish grandchildren and there is no evidence of any sort that Trump is an antiSemite and plenty of evidence to the contrary. Furthermore, this was most likely some of his far left buddies. The Democratic party is packed full of Jew haters. His reply to the entire list consisted of three quotes headed with “THIS IS HOW SANE PEOPLE RESPOND.” The “sane people” all agreed this was a terrible thing. My reply featured under the heading “THIS IS HOW DERANGED TRUMP SUPPORTERS RESPOND” and then a final line directed at me saying “NEVER CONTACT ME AGAIN.”
I haven’t. Who needs to talk to crazy people?

I am going to disagree. It is time to just stop paying any attention to people who will not stop complaining about the speck in my eye, but refuse to acknowledge the plank sticking out of theirs. I am done being an audience for ANYONE’S virtue signalling. There is just no point. Heckling is irrelevant, rational discussion is irrelevant, a person joins the Church of Hating Trump, just let them go live their best life and stay out of their way.
It’s not just for you. These essays are highly useful because they resonate with other classic liberals on the left who’ve tuned out the right. Promoting only echo chamber crap to one another gets us nowhere.
I will have to agree with you in principle on this article. While the anti-Trump part is gratuitous, the rest of it ( and there’s so much more ) is stimulating to read. The author doesn’t protect the left at all in the emasculation of the new world view without a name. But I thought some of her (I’m guessing “her” here because I’m not familiar with Jewish gender names) arguments resonated with what is actually happening – real life stuff that sucks. In particular, one can get a sense of how she thinks with one sentence – “Crucially, this liberalism relied on the view that the Enlightenment tools of reason and the scientific method might have been designed by dead white guys, but they belonged to everyone, and they were the best tools for human progress that have ever been devised”.
That’s a great place to start.
