  1. So in other words…. I can take down Dons? (McDee for you older folk)

    MACDONALDS for older older folk!!

Me thinks this will kill Yelp. They will become more irrelevant than they already are. Like seriously, when every restaurant
is racist why bother to read the reviews?

    1. Most often what appears to be racism is simply one exercising social preferences. We used to have the right to choose. In fact ‘choice’ is the hallmark of a free society. If you are not welcome in some quarters, find another.

    1. It’s one thing to host user reviews that belittle restaurants. Yelp can claim they’re a platform and that users’ opinions are their own. But for Yelp to actively mark a business as “racist” makes them liable for libel.

Yelp is a publically traded company. My guess is that managements’ phones are ringing off the hook right now with stock holders asking them just how far their heads are up their backside. Yelp will subsequently and quietly back down from this brave business proposal.

  2. Without proof? It’s The Prisoner’s Dilemma writ large.

Except that most that will be playing don’t think long enough term, so everyone will get ratted out, and Yelp will be even less consequential than it is now.

I still think South Park had the best take-off on how to deal with Yelpers that demand special treatment: (crudity warning, NSFW, one of the rudest songs ever written by them, but it still made the show) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yk9Uk4FqBE

  3. The only use Yelp has ever been to me is to find a telephone number or address of a business that doesn’t have a website.

  4. So yelp is no longer just hosting user generated content, but has decided to have an editorial policy?

Seems that it should be very easy in a business to establish damages due to libel on a business review site, and no section 230 in site to save yelp.

I get not consulting a lawyer over every detail, but you would think these “tech” companies would at least have a passing acquaintance the most relevant laws concerning how they operate. Oh right, they are leftist elitists and think the laws are only for other people.

    Short the stock now.

    1. I suspect it’s going to have to go to a test case, as I can see how a tortured reading of s.230(c)(2) could apply here. But it may not matter; in most US states, truth is an absolute defense against libel suits, and saying “business accused of racism” accompanied by a link to a news article detailing the allegations is demonstrably true.

      1. But by exercising editorial control, they lose their protection and they will be responsible for what the users post on their site.
Stock is down almost a dollar from close on the 7th.

        Apparently the trolls are organizing:
“Yelp: We launched anti business button
        4chan: You have chosen death”

This looks like an interesting site: https://www.2ndvote.com/

  5. These corporations and their woke silliness is turning off at least half the country. On what planet does this make sense from a marketing/sales perspective?

  6. If I’m not mistaken, Yelp is the electronic reincarnation of the Yellow Pages. Seldom used them in “the old days”, seldom now. And after this crap, never again. Expect I’m not alone.

    1. C68 (visions of Liberal gun controls circa 1995) I’ve heard of yelp a few times, but never bothered to even wonder what or who they are. Never used em, and don’t use any “Apps” even now. My current phone, I’ve had for 6 months, has 15 pictures, plus I use it for text, pictures, and gasp…phone calls! My last one was five years old, and had less than fifty pics on it. The one before that was a flip phone, so you can see a pattern there I think.
That’s it, I really can’t be bothered with Apps, Twitting, FB, or any other crap. I guess I’m an old school hoplophobe. I certainly don’t center my life around the dang thing, and try to avoid lamp posts and such, while navigating a street or walkway They are just another part of the infernal machines we have to deal with today ugghh!

  7. The biggest social disease in Canada and the US at this time is the Donald Trump Derangement Syndrome and other insanities of the left.

I tell you now, if the left is not stopped on both sides of the border and beyond … we are going to lose what’s left of our freedoms and most certainly our prosperity.

And no one believes anything on Yelp it’s worse than Snopes.

    1. J W, that would be true. Sadly the majority of Canadians buy into the communist bullshit.

    1. … appeal to the ‘Human’ Rights Court. Is a Yelp review of a Chinese Restaurant only good for one hour ?

  8. It requires a credible news source (allegedly).

So can I quote the Washington Post’s own articles against them? Such as the defamation of Barrett and her church article that came out in the “opinion section”. How about every time a over zealous employee refuses service to a police officer? Hmmm, I could go after every business that engages in ‘White Privilege” training. This sounds like a bonanza for lawyers.

    1. BS, How about Barf. I don’t use any of these stupid things, they just clutter up your life with useless trivia. J West above, mentions Snopes, that’s another app I’ve heard of, but don’t use, want, or need, or know, what it does. I don’t care, it’s not that I don’t want to care, I just can’t!

  9. YELP also offers a service where if you pay they will manipulate the feed to make your results more favourable. I suppose if you pay you can get the racist business tag removed. More ways to extort businesses. Subtler than “donate to BLM or your business will be looted and burned” but the same thing.

  10. How do I leave a review on the Yelp site about them being racist?
    Everyone is racist after all.

Will they tag their own site if enough of us point out their racism?

  11. Nick Sandman’s legal team take note.

No different than me taking out an advertisement on a billboard accusing someone of being a racist with no proof.

    These people are sooooo stuuuuupid!

  12. When will this pathological obsession with race end? Yes racism is bad, but there are far worse things in society. Things like making it easy to destroy people because of some petty grudge.

  13. This is what you get by hiring gender studies graduates for HR and marketing. I have Yelp to help find places and numbers. It started this idiotic road by stating it would identify black owned businesses. Who cares? If the product and service are good it doesn’t matter who or what it’s run by.
Now I’m thinking of deleting the app.

  14. Presumably by “racist” they mean “conservative” so I, for one, will be looking for the Yelp “racist” designation to choose my dining experience ….

  15. This has shown up on 4chan. Most of the commenters are saying that they’ll look for ‘racist’ places so they’ll know where to take their business.
