  1. The only “indigenous” tribes I have much respect for are the ones that have concluded that the white man has nothing they want and enforce their right to be left in peace as necessary. (There are no truly “uncontacted” tribes left.)

My favourite such group are the tribesmen of North Sentinel Island, nominally a possession of India.

In reality the Sentinelese reject all attempts at contact, and systematically kill any outsiders who try to land on their island. Indian authorities have never tried to impose their will on the islanders, the island having no resources worth exploiting.

For their part the natives never leave their island except to fish, and even the natives of nearby islands cannot understand the Sentinelese language.

Almost alone among the peoples of the world, the Sentinelese are completely self-sufficient, owing nothing to any other human being—which is another way of saying that almost alone among the peoples of the world, they are free.

    1. I’m indigenous. Dene Indian. I’m a mom. I own a business, employ people and pay taxes.

But you have no respect for me. Maybe you want to rephrase your post.

Don’t worry about hurting my feelings and don’t worry about me hurting your feelings. It is impossible to be insulted by someone you dont respect.

    2. They may be free, but they’re also murderers. However stupid or unlucky some of the people who have traveled to, or been washed ashore upon their island, they don’t deserve to be speared to death. I wonder if a tribe of white people who laid claim to a territory and killed anyone who attempted to intrude would be treated so leniently?

  2. They may be truly free but at times, they must be4 extremely frightened of strangers especially to have killed someone in their view, in self defense. It would be only fair to know if they abhor murder.

Perhaps they don’t want contact with the outside world because they may have severe problems with birth defects and don’t understand about the issues on consanguineous kinship.

I would love to see a movie or documentary about them. They would be most fascinating — a real throw back to how things used to be. Most interesting would be to see that they think about the world and our inventions especially aircraft. Surely they must’ve seen them flying over their territory. They must be a source of stress for them. Or, OTOH, would they likely think that these are noisy strange birds?

On the latter, they’d be accurate. We are, in fact, strange birds!

  3. I think we should send our indigenous protesters/protectors to Brazil to … establish friendly contacts with locals or something…

  4. These people should have watched the South Park episode about the rain forest. 🙂
    Cynicism saves lives.

  5. “@The tribe “are known as a peaceful group,” Uchida told AFP in an email.”

    Make that “mostly peaceful”.
