Round figures for Ontario:1 out of 5 who self report and get confirmed end up in the hospital. 1 out of 5 who end up in the hospital die. Big question is how many catch it but don’t report themselves and don’t get counted in the number of cases. My guestimate 10-20 times the number of cases reported. For anyone in the at risk group living where covid is still being passed on, the odds of dying are 1 in a 100 in any year.

In brief, what was banned were semi auto centerfire and rimfire, semi auto shotguns with 5 shot mags are ok, levers ok.
There were estimated to be about 18,000 of the banned SAs in country, mostly AR style .223s. not sure how many the police “recovered”, not half I’d guess. Because NZ has a big majority of hunters who use bolts and waterfowl hunters with their SA shotguns…. people own as many firearms as they ever did, minus some AR’s.
The Monty Python aspect of this is that NZ firearms were never registered by serial number, that only happened just for AR’s relatively recently, so no-one knows who owns what and they never will know.
The other bizarre aspect is that the Christchurch perp only got a firearms licence because of police incompetence and refusal to follow procedure. The existing system would have stopped him had it been followed.
