From the headline I thought the article would be about Ottawa. Because I’ve said the very same thing about that hellscape, and long, long before the COVID nonsense.
I’ve lived in places that deserved that title.
DC is now a desolate place. So, what’s the problem?
Go behind the desolate edifices … and as SD said … mounds upon mounds of maggots sucking on the dead carcasses of dead cockroaches. So that’s what’s wrong. The streets are dead. The city is dead. But the maggots abound … sucking the remnant nutrients from the body politic. What? $30T in debt? What does that mean? Virtually ALL your taxes are going to pay the interest on the debt. More and more taxes … fewer and fewer government services. And the only way to keep pace? More and more multi-culti aliens to feed the maggots. Massive numbers (multiple millions) of immigrants of all description.

To be more definitive in nomenclature and to differentiate from the Washington State team, might I suggest The Washington DCs. Two interpretive options might be, Washington DiCs or Washington D&C’s. Can’t wait for the Edmonton Eunuchs.

Many US cities fit into this “laid waste” catagory. Chicago’s beautiful skyline, parks and lakefront have been overshadowed by nearly NINE decades of Democrat Party rule. It’s decline has nothing to do with wuhan flu, it’s caused by political corruption (kickbacks, bribes and pay-to-play) forcing businessmen and factories out to be replaced by drug lords. The decline is entirely due to Democrat voters, including the dead ones.

At the end of this article, the author appears to blame Trump for DC’s demise. Although Trump did commit to “draining the swamp” (i.e., D.C.), he did not cause the problems in D.C. that the author describes.

My interpretation is that he is thinking that maybe it would be best for Trump not to win because the situation is hopeless; not that he is blaming Trump for that souless cesspool.
Of late I’ve been toying with the notion (not sure how sincerely) that Trump should WIN … then immediately quit after making the speech of the century. Pence too. A win will be no victory!

I think the major point is being missed here. Primarily, Washington DC has two main consumer bases. One is, of course, tourism. That is not the focus of the American people right now as they have just gotten back to work, and vacations are not a priority (and likely discouraged by new and re-fitted employers).
The second consumer base is the one that has always been Washington DC’s stale bread and butter. Lobbying. Sure, there is still some lobbying going on, but is a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of what was considered normal. The fact that the “industry” is dead is a very good thing. It implies that foreign countries and domestic interest groups don’t see an opportunity. So, they aren’t sending their snake oil salesmen to Washington to latch onto their American piece of the pie (i.e. your tax dollars). Of course, Trump International is going to take a hit. Their demographic consumer base was the lobbyist traveling from abroad. It seems that other nations got the message. Stay home, there’s no free stuff for you here.
You can add to that lessening number many other lobbyists who already got what they wanted (but in a positive way). One of the functions the Trump Administration has been doing under the radar is massive massive massive De-regulation. We’re talking thousands and thousands of pages of de-regulation. Many of these lobbyists would be there right now pushing for their industries to be de-regulated but for the fact they have already been de-regulated.
So, me personally, I see a vacant empty National Capital as a positive sign. One that has been long overdue….and will only last as long as someone in the White House refuses to hand out free candy.

As a retired regulatee (securities) for nearly 40 years I can say that you are absolutely correct about lobbyists SEEKING regulation as self protection from competition. Like most things nowadays regulation is hardly ever about what it claims to be about, with the possible exception of hard core safety, e.g. aviation.
Most of these Liberal cities appear to be now run by Black mayors filled with mostly Black, Latino, “gay” and feminist female city counsels and Police Chiefs.
Simply put, they’re running out of excuses as these cities descend into dystopian nightmares.
I’m going to tip toe around any suggestion of “racism” and say instead .., that identity politics, affirmative-action, gender equity, and social promotion are to blame for all the FAILED Mayors … and inept governance.
